Grandview edges Eisenhower for title

YAKIMA — After 12 hours of tournament competition, Grandview and Eisenhower took the championship of the SunDome Volleyball Festival down to just a few minutes.

And the Greyhounds owned those minutes.

Closing the third and deciding game with a 5-1 run, Grandview outlasted the Cadets 25-18, 22-25, 15-10 to capture the title in the 32-team tourney Saturday night.

Grandview’s power tandem of seniors Kinzi Poteet and Sydney Mottice did just enough to offset a big floor game for Eisenhower junior Tori Fisher, who put down 18 kills in the title match.

Poteet, last year’s CWAC player of the year, used a kill and block to highlight a late 5-0 run in the opening game.

But the Cadets rallied back in the second as Fisher collected nine of her kills and had two aces. Sophomore teammate Shelby Fitterer produced four kills in the second game, including the final point.

The final game to 15 went back and forth with Grandview holding a 10-9 lead before the state’s top-ranked Class 2A team closed with its finishing rush.

Poteet and Mottice combined for 95 kills, 35 blocks and 107 digs for the day.

Grandview, Eisenhower and West Valley all won their pools in the morning and early afternoon. The Greyhounds defeated West Valley in the championship quarterfinals, then swept North Mason in the semifinals.

Eisenhower swept North Central 25-20, 25-17 in its quarterfinal, and then rallied to oust Cedar Park Christian 14-25, 25-19, 15-11 in the semis to reach the final.

West Valley’s only loss for the day was to Grandview. East Valley finished second to the Rams in pool play and won the bracket for No. 2 seeds.
