YVCC will debut new soccer field today

Yakima Valley Community College will unveil its new on-campus soccer field today with a non-league match against Lane.

The Yaks, who opened their season last week with a 1-1 tie against Clark at Vancouver, will open play at 2 p.m. They will then host Southwestern Oregon at 2 p.m. Saturday.

At Clark, sophomore Rachel Mohs scored in the 74th minute to tie the score.
Central earns another tie

SEASIDE, Calif. — With all the scoring coming in a two-minute blitz, Central Washington and Cal State Monterey Bay battled to a 1-1 non-conference draw on Thursday afternoon.

Freshman Serena Tomaso scored in the 41st minute, but CSMB scored two minutes later to knot the score. The score remained tied through two 10-minute overtimes.

Central’s second straight tie moved its record to 2-1-2 overall.

CWU junior goalkeeper Amber Easterbrook made five saves but had her scoreless streak ended at 352 minutes.

The Wildcats will wrap up their road trip on Saturday at Notre Dame de Namur University.

First half: 1, Central Washington, Serena Tomaso, 42:00; 2, Cal State Monterey Bay, Eva Arzola (Alyssa Mathesen), 43:00.

Saves: Amber Easterbrook (CWU) 5; Graciela Holquin (CSMB) 8.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Yaks swept at Skagit Valley

MOUNT VERNON — Kinsey Doering had 12 kills, but Yakima Valley fell to Skagit Valley 3-0 in a non-league volleyball match Thursday night.

The 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 defeat left YVCC, which lost its Eastern Region opener at Blue Mountain on Wednesday, 0-1 in region play and 1-10 overall.

Yakima Valley highlights: Kinsey Doering 12 kills.

LOCAL SWIMMING

Yakima Athletic Club tabs McCall

The Yakima Athletic Club has hired John McCall to coach its swim team, which starts its 20th season this week. McCall is from Temecula, Calif., competed collegiately and trained with Olympic swimmer Peter Vanderkay.

YAC Swimming is geared to all age groups and the team currently has 40 swimmers. For more information, contact McCall at 453-6521.
YMCA Swim getting started

The Yakima YMCA Swim team is starting its season and is offering prospective new members a free one-week trial period next week.

Beginning next Monday, new swimmers ages 11 and up are invited to swim with the team Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4:30 to 6 p.m., while swimmers 10 and under may try out from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
