GNAC’s best heading to Naches Heights

YAKIMA — Western Washington will be seeking its third straight men’s team championship and Seattle Pacific will go after its fourth consecutive women’s title in the eighth-annual GNAC cross country championships which Central Washington will host Saturday at Apple Ridge Run on Naches Heights.

The Vikings won the men’s title each of the past two seasons with identical team scores of 35, just three points off the GNAC record of 32 set by Northwest Nazarene in the inaugural meet in 2001.

The men’s 8k competition is scheduled for 10 a.m. with the women’s 6k race to follow at 11.

Spectators should drive north on Naches Heights Road to Wherry Road, then turn left. Parking will be available down Wherry Road and to the right.

In the women’s race, Seattle Pacific, which is ranked third in the region and 17th nationally, will be seeking its fourth straight team title and its fifth in six years.

Marcie Mullen will compete for Central.

Most of the GNAC teams will advance to San Diego in two weeks to compete in the NCAA West Regional championships. The top three men’s teams and the top five women’s teams in the regional will qualify for the national meet, Nov. 22 at Slippery Rock, Pa.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Wildcats down Saint Martin’s, 3-1

LACEY — Rachael had 14 kills and Kady Try totaled 13 kills, three aces, two blocks and 11 digs as Central Washington defeated Saint Martin’s 3-1 in GNAC volleyball action Thursday night at Marcus Pavilion.

The Wildcats’ 25-8, 16-25, 25-18, 25-21 victory improved them to 6-4 in conference play and 14-8 overall. The Saints slipped to 1-9 and 4-15.

Brandie Vea had 18 digs and Maggie Olson totaled 33 assists for Central, which continues GNAC play Saturday at Montana State Billings.

Central Washington highlights: Rachael Schurman 14 kills, 5 blocks; Kady Try 13 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks, 11 digs; Erin Norris 12 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks; Brandie Vea 18 digs; Kayla Roof 11 digs; Maggie Olson 33 assists.

AMATEUR BOXING

Amateur bouts Saturday night

The Evans Boxing Club is hosting a night of boxing at 7 o’clock Saturday at the Yakima Eagles on Chestnut Avenue.

Teams from around the state are scheduled to compete in what should be 20-30 bouts.

Davis senior Oscar Suarez will be featured in the main event against Gilbert Duran of the Yakima Police Athletic League in a lightweight bout.

This is the first bout for Suarez (23-3) since this past spring.

Tickets will be available at the door.
