Local report — CWU soccer earns ranking

ELLENSBURG — Central Washington’s women’s soccer team scored a first Wednesday when it was ranked ninth in the first Division II West Region poll.

The Wildcats, 6-4-2 overall with a 5-4-2 record against Division II opponents, had never before been ranked during their 11 seasons as an NCAA member.

Western Washington and Seattle Pacific, who have dealt Central two of their defeats, were ranked second and third, respectively.No. 1 UC San Diego defeated CWU 2-0 in the season-opener for both schools on Aug. 28.

The top six teams in the final regional poll will advance to the Division II national tournament.

Central will continue its season with GNAC games at Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon today and Saturday, respectively.

Yaks fall to Blue Mountain in five

Yakima Valley extended Blue Mountain to five sets before losing to the Timberwolves in Eastern Region volleyball action Wednesday night at Sherar Gym. The Yaks fell 26-28, 25-14, 25-27, 25-13, 15-13.

Shalane Scott had 17 kills while Tayler Hill and Monica De Rushé for the YVCC while Hill added three blocks. The Yaks fell to 0-9 in region play and 1-23 overall.

Angie Bailey totaled 24 kills for Blue Mountain (6-3, 11-15).

Shalene Scott 17 kills; Tayler Hill 11 kills, 3 digs; Monica De Rushé 11 kills.
