Schooley, Martinez 1-2 at Richland Invite

RICHLAND — Davis’ Shawna Schooley and Sandra Martinez finished 1-2 in the top girls flight in leading Davis to a third-place finish at the 40th Richland Invitational on Saturday.

Schooley covered the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 21 seconds, with Martinez seven seconds behind.

Kaitlin Kaluzny was 17th in 19:14 as the Pirates trailed only Seattle Prep and Richland in the team standings.

In the Girls Varsity II Division, consisting of smaller classification schools, Wapato freshman Samantha Blodgett was the winner, clocking a 19:41. Teammate Charlie Fiander was fifth, Sunnyside’s Jocelyn Yanez was seventh, and East Valley’s Azayla Alvarado was 10th.

In the boys races, Davis’ Emmanuel Contreras was seventh in the Varsity I Division, while East Valley’s Mason Yates was second in the Varsity II Division to lead local placers.

Contreras was timed in 15:30, 33 seconds behind winner Andrew Kimpel of North Central.

Yates had a time of 16:35, trailing only Alex Johnson of Seattle Academy, to help the Red Devils finish fourth. Other locals in the top 10 were Sunnyside’s Jacob Rogers in sixth, leading the Grizzlies to a third-place finish, and Wapato’s Eduardo Torres in eighth.

QUINCY INVITATIONAL: Toppenish’s Ben Villanueva and Highland’s Arianna Cole finish fourth in their respective races, helping the Wildcat boys take third place, and the Highland girls second in the race at the Gorge Amphitheater.

Villanueva covered the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 29.05 seconds, trailing only three runners from Vashon.

Cole was timed in 20:53.84, and she was behind three King’s runners.
