Fast times for Eisenhower

FEDERAL WAY — On a day of fast times, Eisenhower was right there with the best of them as Kirsta Bezenek and a relay team posted two of the fastest times in Valley history at the Class 4A state swimming and diving championships.

Bezenek finished third in the 100-yard butterfly preliminary with a time of 57.88 seconds, the second fastest in Valley history. Bezenek was ranked 17th entering the event at the King County Aquatic Center.

Bezenek then teamed with Gabby Ruiz, Emilie Pleger and Beth Klingele to post the third fastest 200 medley relay time in Valley history. Their time of 1:52.48, which put them sixth Friday, was a full three seconds lower than their previous best this season.

Pleger also qualified for the 100 breaststroke final with an eighth-place finish in the prelims.

In Friday’s 2A-1A prelims, East Valley’s Kaitlin Kelsch (100 free) and Janet Durant (diving) and Prosser’s 200 medley relay topped local efforts with fourth-place finishes.

Prosser’s Mackenzie Gant and Hanna Rankin qualified for the championship final in the 100 back and swam on the 200 medley and 400 free relays, which also made the top eight.

Ellensburg’s Alyssa Sauriol was sixth in the 200 free and 500 free.

In the 3A preliminaries, Sunnyside’s Kaitlyn Broersma was the only local swimmer advancing to a championship final, qualifying fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Her time was 1:08.23.

Finals in 4A and 2A begin today at 10:15 a.m. followed by the 3A finals at 5:45 p.m.
