Volleyball: Hounds lose after working late shift

KENNEWICK — What is it about these Friday night marathons for Grandview at the Class 2A state volleyball tournament?

A year after dueling with Lynden in a five-set quarterfinal with the Toyota Center nearly vacated, the Greyhounds found themselves in the same situation as Friday night nearly turned to Saturday morning.

Tum-water  beat Grandview 25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 25-12 just moments before the Herald-Republic’s press time.

With 6-foot Idaho signee Alex Sele leading the way, Tum-water won the opening game. Grandview answered with its own star as Kinzi Poteet powered down six kills.

The Thunderbirds, however, took control by winning the third set.

Tumwater faces Lynden in today’s semifinals at 2 p.m.  Grandview faces Pullman at 3:30 for the right to play for fourth and seventh place.

The Greyhounds were slow to get their state tournament started but they certainly got up to speed. After dropping the opening set and holding on to barely win the second, Grandview rolled to a 16-25, 27-25, 25-12, 25-13 victory over Archbishop Murphy in the afternoon openers.

ATM’s defense wilted under Grandview’s offensive pressure. Sydney Mottice, Poteet and Meagan Smasne all reached double figures in kills, combining for 41.
