Yakima Valley men throttle Everett
November 29, 2008 by YH-R Sports
LONGVIEW — Ray Funk wasn’t happy with the 28 turnovers his Yakima Valley team committed Friday against Everett in the first round of the Red Devil Classic at Longview Community College.
But he wasn’t nearly as distraught as he might have been, given the Yaks’ 84-65 victory.
“The turnovers, and taking care of the ball, are something we as a group need to address,” Funk said after his team improved to 3-1. “But we did do some things well.”
Specifically, YVCC defended the perimeter well enough to help the Trojans shoot 12 of 51 from 3-point range (24 percent) and 25 of 87 (29 percent) overall. The Yaks also compiled a 54-48 rebounding advantage, getting anoher double-double from Jody Johnson in the form of 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Ben Wilson came off the bench for 13 points, Rico Wilkins had 12 and LeMar Anglin added 10 points and eight boards.
The Yaks meet Chemeketa today in a tournament semifinal.
“Jody had another nice game for us,” Funk said, “and LeMar rebounded well. Their (Everett’s) offense is sort of chuck and duck, but they’re a dangerous team if some of their shooters get hot.”

Central stumbles on road
November 29, 2008 by YH-R Sports
BELMONT, Calif. — Central Washington, with only two exhibitions and an 85-point win over Multnomah University under its belt, fell to Sonoma State 81-74 on Friday in the Notre Dame de Namur Thanksgiving Tournament.
The defeat left the 11th-ranked Wildcats 1-1 going into today’s 3 p.m. contest with UC San Diego.
Jake Beitinger had 30 points and 10 rebounds, but only two other Central players scored in double figures — Brandon Foote with 14 points and Matt Penoncello with 13. The Wildcats shot only 37 percent.
The Seawolves (2-1), led by James Sandoval’s 20 points, led 35-26 at halftime and CWU was unable to recover.
“We didn’t play well at all in the first half, but played a lot better in the second,” Central coach Greg Sparling said. “The thing is, they’d played an exhibition against Arizona (a 78-54 loss) and had some other games (including a 68-63 home loss to GNAC member Northwest Nazarene).
“We have to find ways as staff to get more teams to play us in the preseason. We thought we had games with a couple of DI schools lined up, but they did their research and those games went out the window in a hurry.”
The Wildcats were a preseason pick to win the conference title in a poll of GNAC coaches, but against Sonoma of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, starters Riley Sivak and Chris Scott went scoreless.
“We’ll get better,” Sparling said. “This team’s going to be good.”

Bus carrying Bellevue FB team crashes
November 28, 2008 by YH-R Sports
SEATTLE — A bus carrying members of the Bellevue High School football team overturned on Interstate 5 on Friday.
Injuries are believed to be minor in the crash, which happened at 10:56 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-5 south near Des Moines. The bus was heading to the Tacoma Dome, where the team was scheduled to play Capital High of Olympia in a Class 3A semifinal. The game was postponed until Monday.
According to the State Patrol, eight people were transferred to hospitals, including six football players. The most serious injury was a concussion.
“None of the injuries is life-threatening,” said team trainer Bethany Desimone, who was on the bus. “But we do have some cases of whiplash and back injuries.”
The injured were taken to several different hospitals. Some players were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Two players who suffered minor injuries and were in stable condition were taken to Valley Medical Center in Renton, and one player went to Highline Community Hospital.
State Patrol Trooper Cliff Pratt said 38 people were on the charter bus, most of them players.
Most players were wearing their game pants and pads, which probably prevented more injuries, he said.
Head coach Butch Goncharoff said of the players, “They aren’t OK. I don’t think anyone is seriously hurt or life-threateningly hurt. But there are a lot of beat up kids who are pretty bad.”
A couple of the injured players were all-conference players, he said. Today’s game has been rescheduled for Monday, but Goncharoff said he doubted the injured players would be able to play in the game. But “we’ll get a team together to play.”
The rescheduled game will take place at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood, at 7 p.m. Monday. Tickets purchased at the Tacoma Dome for today’s game will be honored on Monday.
Pratt said an unidentified vehicle lost a ladder on the freeway, causing several vehicles to swerve out of the way. A semi-truck and two passenger vehicles were also involved in the collision, he said.
“This is at this point a criminal investigation. We are looking for who lost that ladder. If it weren’t for that ladder we’d be playing football right now,” Pratt said.
The crash is blocking two right lanes of southbound I-5, at South 216th Street. Traffic was moving in the left lanes, said state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Broch Bender.
Jake Hiller, a 17-year-old tackle, was sitting in the back row of the bus when the accident happened.
“We were slowing down and swerved to the right, off the road. Everybody was kind of screaming. The bus flipped onto its side and skidded,” he said.
Hiller said he was dizzy and suffered some cuts and scrapes. He was taken to Highline Community Hospital.
Jake’s father, Steve Hiller was at home preparing to leave for the Tacoma Dome when he got word of the accident.
“We’re just really glad it wasn’t more serious, and we’ll be back to play another day,” he said.
Desimone, the team’s 24-year-old trainer, had a second-row view as the accident unfolded.
She said the bus was in a center lane of the freeway when traffic ahead of them slowed. The bus veered into a lane to the right, collided with the back of a truck and semitrailer, and then ran into the embankment on the side of the road where it flipped onto its side.
The collision with the back of the truck just felt like a “tap” she said, because the truck was still moving. But the crash into the embankment was “pretty hard. It flew people in the air.”
Desimone said people in the bus were relatively calm as the crash unfolded. After they came to a stop the coaches told the passengers to remain calm and asked for anyone who was hurt to identify themselves. Then they got out of the bus through an emergency exit in the roof, and the front windshield, which shattered in the crash.
A team fan, described as a “superfan” who is approximately 60 years old and attends every game, was bleeding from a head injury, said Desimone, who helped tend to him. She said some other people suffered injuries from broken glass or whiplash.
The markings on the bus identified it as belonging to the Chinook Charter Service.
Bellevue was scheduled to play Capital High of Olympia in the Class AAA semifinals at the Tacoma Dome.

Ex-Ike standouts starring for Portland colleges

YAKIMA — Claire Faucher and Laiken Dollente had Wednesday’s women’s basketball game between Portland State and Portland circled for some time.
Not just because of the crosstown rivalry. Local bragging rights are well and good, but their heightened interest was also personal.
The game was one of the few times the longtime friends and teammates from Yakima get a chance to spend time with each other.
Even though both attend colleges in the same city, they’ve never found time to rekindle a Yakima friendship that culminated with the two helping the Eisenhower Cadets to a 29-2 record and a fourth-place finish in the 2006 state Class 4A basketball tournament.
“I saw her (Dollente) last week when our men’s teams played and we talked for about five minutes, and that was the first time I’d seen her since we played last season,” said Faucher, the starting point guard for Portland State. “We live in the same city, but we lead two different lives.”
“It’s weird to not see each other more,” said Dollente, Portland’s starting shooting guard. “I thought it’d be great; we’d be 10 minutes away from each other. But between school and basketball, there’s just no time.”
Although their direct contact is minimal, the two have kept tabs on the other, and are delighted each is enjoying success at the major college level.
Both have become integral parts of their teams, with Faucher thriving in the Vikings’ up-tempo offense brought in last season by coach Sherri Murrell, and Dollente the top scoring threat for the Pilots.
“Claire’s a really good point guard and the one player (for Portland State) who really makes me nervous,” Dollente said. “Claire has a huge impact on her team.”
“She’s their go-to player, and they run as many sets for her as they can,” Faucher said of her former Ike backcourt mate. “There’s not much you can do to stop her. You just have to keep the ball out of her hands.”
Faucher burst on the scene last season after a stress fracture in her foot limited her as a freshman. The 5-foot-9 guard led the nation in assists (8.84 per game) and averaged 13.6 points to help her earn Associated Press All-America honorable mention, and first team All-Big Sky honors.
“Our coaches do a great job of helping us be successful,” Faucher said. “They’ve designed our offense around all our strengths. I’m a point guard who loves to push the ball and find teammates in transition … and here, we try to run and be up-tempo.”
With a year under their belts in this system, Faucher believes the team is poised for a highly successful 2008-09 campaign.
“We can play with anyone and we definitely have high expectations for ourselves,” said Faucher, who is averaging 10.3 points and 6.67 assists for the 2-1 Vikings this season. “When we have all cylinders firing, we’ll be tough to stop.”
At Portland, meanwhile, Dollente is coming off a sophomore season where she was named Portland’s most valuable player and earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention after leading the team in scoring (14.6 points). She was also second in the nation in free-throw shooting at 91.4 percent (139 of 152).
This season, the 5-8 junior is averaging 20.8 points, and has hit 12 of 29 3-pointers (41.4 percent) for the 2-3 Pilots.
“I just want to be consistent,” said Dollente, who said her game has “completely changed” since high school.
“I was so out of control in high school,” she said, laughing. “I’d just run into the lane and try to get fouled. Since I got to college, I’ve spent so much time in the gym working on my shot. I take a lot more 3-pointers (than in high school), but I’ve also worked hard on developing an inside-out game.”
That work has earned her the confidence of her coaches.
“My coaches give me a lot of freedom, so you can’t argue with that,” said Dollente, who is also taking on a leadership role for the young Pilots. “The past two years, I didn’t feel ready to step up. Now, I’m looking to not only score but step up as a leader. We’re young, but I think we can be so much better than others give us credit for. I want us to play with a chip on our shoulders.”
As for Wednesday, both players were excited to face each other again — but neither wanted to lose bragging rights for another year.
“We beat them pretty handily last year,” Faucher said, “but I guarantee it won’t be that way (Wednesday).”
“Last year, I was happy for Claire because she had a good game, but I wanted to have another chance to beat them last season,” said Dollente, referring to the fact that the schools meet just once each season because they play in different conferences.
Along with the on-court competition, there will be additional excitement between the two because both of their families were planning to attend.
“I’m excited but also nervous,” Dollente said. “Hopefully, it’ll be OK. I just don’t want to be the one to say I wish we could’ve done better.”
2006 Ike squad making a D-I splash
November 27, 2008 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA — It was a historic season by Yakima Valley standards: 29 victories.
The 2005-06 Eisenhower girls basketball team set a Valley record for wins en route to fourth place in the Class 4A state tournament, the highest finish in the program’s history.
The Cadets won their first 25 games before a loss to eventual state champion Lewis & Clark in a regional semifinal. Ike also dropped a quarterfinal matchup in the state tournament to Auburn Riverside.
And while many high school careers ended when the senior-laden team defeated Woodinville for the fourth-place trophy, the starting five is still going, albeit in a variety of sports and all at the Division I level.
Besides Claire Faucher at Portland State and Laiken Dollente across town at the University of Portland, Marianne Lombardi is still playing hoops.
Lombardi is a junior forward at Nevada averaging 1.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game through the Wolfpack’s first five games.
Two years ago Lombardi was selected to the all-Western Athletic Conference freshman team and has been selected to the academic all-WAC team both of her first two seasons.
Cassie Robbins, the center for the Cadets, is wrapping up her junior season with the Washington State University volleyball team.
The middle blocker has been sidelined with a stress fracture in her foot, but still leads the Cougars with a an attack average of .322. She also was a member of the Pac-10 honorable mention all-academic team.
Alli Krous, the defensive specialist for Ike, just finished her first soccer season at the University of Maine, starting three games for the Black Bears.
Before Maine, Krous was a two-time all-NWAACC selection at Walla Walla Community College. She also earned all-academic honors.

RACHAEL JOHNSON (West Valley), a sophomore at Western Washington, helped the Vikings place 10th out of 24 teams in the NCAA Division II national cross country championships. Johnson was Western’s No. 4 runner.
CHELSEA VANDEBRAKE (Eisenhower), a junior on the Washington State women’s cross country team, and EVAN BLANSHAN (Selah), a senior on the men’s team, have been named to the Pac-10 all-academic team. VanDeBrake has maintained a 3.97 grade point average in English and Blanshan has a 3.69 GPA in social sciences. Both are repeat first-team selections.
RACHEL HOTCHKO (Davis), a junior on the St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s swimming and diving team, helped the Seahawks’ 400 medley relay team set a pool record of 4:09.55 in recent competition. The performace shattered a five-year-old mark of 4:14.66. Hotchko also was second in both the 200IM at 2:14.47 and 200 back at 2:11.44.
JORDAN BROWN (Prosser), a freshman on the Columbia Basin College women’s basketball team, scored 65 points in three games during the High Hopes Crossover tournament at Yakima Valley’s Sherar Gym. Brown scored 20 points in each of her first two games, then added 25 in her third.
BRANDEN JOHNSON (Eisenhower), a junior on the Montana State men’s basketball team, has started both games so far for the Bobcats (1-1) and is averaging 2.5 points and 6 rebounds per game.
EVAN BERNDT (West Valley), a freshman on the Highline Community College men’s basketball team, hit four 3-pointers, scored 15 points and had three steals in a 107-81 win over Portland CC on Sunday.
JENNA BOYLE (West Valley), a freshman on the Santa Barbara City College women’s golf team, helped the Vaqueros win the state championship. Boyle shot rounds of 84 and 80 for a 17th overall finish.
