Sweet 16: Ike starts slow, finishes big

No. 3 Cadets remain perfect with second-half surge

YAKIMA, Wash. — As if they hadn’t already shown their potential by going three quarters of the regular season without losing, Eisenhower’s Cadets raised the bar Friday night.

And also the roof at Ike Gym.

Ike turned a first-half fist fight into a second-half footrace in its CBBN 4A matchup with Walla Walla, and the result was a 70-40 blowout that left Jordan Gaut smiling, Pat Fitterer marveling and a very good Blue Devils team battered and bewildered.

“I’m not sure if it was our best half of the year,” said a beaming Gaut, who led five Cadets in double figures with 15 points plus six rebounds and his usual amount of lockdown defense. “But it was up there. Definitely.”

His coach, Fitterer, disagreed ever so slightly.

“Our best, no question,” he said. “We’d like to bottle that. We did everything right.”

To the delight and perhaps even amazement of most in attendance, the third-ranked Cadets buried Wa-Hi 47-20 over the final 16 minutes, dominating every facet of play while improving to 8-0 in league play and 16-0 overall going into tonight’s game at West Valley.

“Going undefeated in the regular season has been one of our goals,” said Gaut. “It’s been on our task list since last summer, and we’ve had this game circled since the start of the season.”

Or at least since Jan. 9, when Ike won 66-61 at Walla Walla. A notable achievement, considering the leg-deadening three-plus hour bus ride and hostile environment.

Plus the Blue Devils can play. Their four losses prior to Friday had come by a combined 13 points.

And through a 23-20 first half they stayed with Eisenhower, even carrying some momentum into intermission via a closing 6-2 run.

But Fitterer asked his players to “pick up the pace,” as he put it, and they responded in dramatic fashion.

If the Cadets weren’t forcing turnovers with their 1-2-2 zone defense, they were hounding Walla Walla into 6-for-18 shooting. And when the Blue Devils missed, Ike usually rebounded and sent multiple players flying goalward to receive a slick transition pass from James Lopez or Tyler Berman or Gaut or whoever handled the ball.

And speaking of Berman, who totaled 14 points and five boards, Fitterer effusively praised the active, long-limbed 6-2 senior as the point man on the aforementioned defense, known among the Cadets as “amoeba.”

“Tyler was awesome,” Fitterer said. “He’s the ideal guy to have out there. Every time their guard (Gary) Winston tried to penetrate, he was right in his chest.”

Taylor Elmo had 13 points, Lopez 12 and Robert Bonser 10 — with the 6-5 junior even nailing two 3-pointers.

After starting the third quarter with four quick points, Ike answered two free throws by rugged Wa-Hi senior Spencer Hessler with a 19-4 sprint for a 46-36 cushion with 1:56 left in the period.

An 11-2 burst to start the fourth quarter, capped by Bonser’s first long ball, made it 59-29.

“The whole thing with us,” Gaut said, “is we’re at our best when we just play — when we’re having fun. You see us smiling out there and that’s because we’re just playing. We love the game.”

Michael Weisner, a 6-7 junior, led Walla Walla with 15 points while Hessler had 11.

Rangers, Take Two

NV gets past Granger again, takes control in SCAC West

GRANGER — Meet the new king — which, amazingly enough, is the same as the old king.

After sitting alone atop the SCAC West through most of the first half of league play by virtue of its early home-court upset of preseason favorite Granger, the Naches Valley Rangers on Friday had to play in the Spartans’ house.

And the Rangers, the team nobody saw coming, did it again.

Winning by such arcane concepts as patient offense, zone defense, team play and mistake-free fundamentals, the Rangers escaped with a 53-48 triumph behind the unlikely 3-point shooting of 6-foot-4 Adam Ranger and the inability of the Spartans to put away a game they seemingly had in the bag.

“We’ve been looking forward to this game a lot,” Ranger said after his three second-half 3-pointers helped Naches Valley (7-1 SCAC West, 11-5 overall) rally from an eight-point second-half deficit. “They’re the team you have to beat in our league. They were picked to win it, and winning this game helps put us in a position to win league if we can win out.

“It’s our toughest game in the league.”

The Spartans (5-2, 10-5) led for most of the first half and pushed their advantage to 33-25 midway through the third quarter after 3-pointers by Mitchell Zapien and Mychal Lopez, who would combine for 32 points. But Justin Weigel’s steal and driving layup ignited a 9-2 Naches Valley run, and after Lopez ended that burst with a 3-pointer, Ranger answered with one of his own.

“He’s a real confident kid,” Naches Valley coach Jon Eldridge said of Ranger, who finished with 15 points. “He misses a few here and there, and if he does, he knows the next one is going to go down. And if that one doesn’t, the one after that will.”

Sure enough, with 2:53 remaining and the score knotted at 40-40, Ranger struck again with his fifth 3-pointer of the night. And as soon as Naches Valley got the ball back with the lead, the Rangers had the game in hand.

With guards Justin Weigel and Thomas Wilcox controlling the tempo out front, Naches Valley committed only nine turnovers all game. Unable to force turnovers or steal the ball, the Spartans were forced to foul, and the Rangers sank 10 of their last 13 free throws.

“That’s a good club,” said Granger coach Miguel Bazaldua, whose team took just seven free throws compared to 28 for the Rangers. “They hit some big shots, they know how to protect a lead and they’re a good free-throw shooting team.”

“With us, it’s those ticky-tack fouls we seem to pick up. We need to keep our poise, maintain our composure in games like this, and we’ll be all right.”

For now, though, the team on top of the SCAC West remains the one so often in slow motion.

“We stay in the zone and slow down the game,” Ranger said with a nod. “That’s our style of play.”

And it’s working.

Struggles at the free-throw line doom Pirates

YAKIMA, Wash. — Wenatchee’s boys basketball team — pacesetters in the CBBN Columbia — brought an eight-game win streak into Davis Gym on Friday, and the young Pirates brought together all the elements of an upset.

They held their own in rebounding against a much taller team, they hit five 3-pointers, forced 16 turnovers and scored more field goals.

But Davis came up short in one category — free throws — and that spoiled the night. The Pirates made just one of 10 attempts in the second half and Wenatchee connected on 11 of 14 foul shots in the final four minutes to earn a 54-45 victory.

“The kids worked so hard and I love that effort, but you can’t shoot  free throws like that and expect to win,” said Davis coach Eli Juarez, whose team finished 4-for-14 for the game. “And the thing is, these kids can shoot free throws. That just added to the frustration when we started missing them.”

A crucial sequence came in the third quarter when Davis yielded its final lead to a 9-0 run by the Panthers, who took advantage of the Pirates having their top three scorers on the bench in foul trouble.

Against Wenatchee’s 6-8, 6-6, 6-4 front line, Davis hung on gamely. Sophomore Jackson Marquis hit two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, the first with 4:30 left for a 43-38 deficit and the second with 1:53 remaining to trim the margin to 49-45.

But Davis’ missed opportunities at the line combined with Wenatchee’s success there was the difference as the Panthers pushed their Columbia record to 8-0.

“This is my first win here so I’ll take it any way I can,” said a relieved Brett McGinnis, who’s in his sixth year as Wenatchee’s head coach. “Davis has tremendous speed, but we got it done with our size and defense. Maybe it was a little ugly, but I’m just glad to get out of here with a win.”

Davis freshman David Trimble scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in the first half and he added eight rebounds, Marquis finished with 11 points and Davonte Luckett grabbed seven rebounds. Leading scorer Les Henderson was held to one field goal.

Four-year standout Austin Bryan, who broke Wenatchee’s career scoring record last week, scored 17 points and 6-8 Connor Smith had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Those two combined to hit 9 of 12 free throws in the final four minutes.

“The positive we take away is that we can play with a much taller team that is unbeaten in our division,” said Juarez, whose team moved to 4-4 in the Columbia and 7-9 overall “We gave them a tough game up there (53-47 loss) and we did it again tonight. If we just hit our free throws …”

GRANGER, Wash. — A month after a knee injury seemed to have ended Ashlee Reddout’s season, the Granger junior forward scored the game-winning basket in the Spartans’ 42-40 SCAC West victory over Naches Valley on Friday. Reddout’s short bank shot after an assist pass from Janae Klarich came with 1:40 remaining, and each team turned the ball over down the stretch before Justine Benner’s 3-pointer — a would-be game-winner for the Rangers — was just barely short at the buzzer. Italia Mengarelli’s two fourth-quarter 3-pointers and Sam Zapien’s 14 points helped lift the Spartans. Benner led Naches Valley with 14 points.

Durbin commits to CWU

YAKIMA, Wash. — The only thing Prosser quarterback Jordan Durbin wanted was a chance to prove that, even at just 5-foot-11, he could go far at the next level.

He’ll have that chance, and as it turns out he won’t have to go far to find it.

Durbin says he verbally committed to Central Washington University on his official recruiting visit to the campus last weekend, which he says was also the first time Wildcat coaches discussed offering him a partial scholarship.

“I’m real excited,” said Durbin, who had begun to wonder whether his prolific passing success at Prosser would earn him a shot at college ball.

“When I got my in-home visit from coach (Blaine) Bennett, he told me I was the No. 1 quarterback on their board,” said Durbin, who earned first-team all-state honors following both of his seasons as the Mustangs’ quarterback. “But they didn’t officially offer a scholarship or discuss that until on my visit (to the campus).”

NCAA guidelines forbid college coaches from commenting on recruits until the Feb. 4 national signing day. But Durbin’s coach at Prosser, Tom Moore, is convinced Durbin is destined for success at Central.

“I think it’s going to be a great fit,” Moore said. “They run a real nice spread offense, their quarterback’s in the shotgun a lot, they’re going to do a lot of the same things they did at Purdue (where Bennett spent six years as quarterbacks coach before becoming assistant head coach at Michigan State).

“I think he’s tailor-made for that offensive system. I think he’ll fit in great.”

In two years as Prosser’s starting quarterback, Durbin passed for 7,996 yards and 124 touchdowns, while completing 69 percent of his passing and being intercepted just 16 times. But even that jaw-dropping efficiency wasn’t enough for many recruiters to get past his 5-11 height.

“Towards the end, I received interest from Portland State, and Washington State has been contacting me and wanting me as a preferred walk-on,” Durbin said. “But throughout the process, Eastern Washington and Central were the ones that showed the most interest, which was great — they’re both local programs, and excellent programs academically as well as in football.”

Central Washington recently picked up a big-name transfer from Boise State, Nick Lomax, son of former Portland State and NFL quarterback Neil Lomax. Ironically, the player Lomax couldn’t beat out at Boise State was another Prosser alum, Kellen Moore, who earned Freshman All-America honors this season with the Broncos.

Durbin will rejoin former Prosser teammate Daniel Gannon, a linebacker/safety at CWU. Ten or more ex-Prosser Mustangs could be playing college ball this fall, including Cody Bruns at Washington and now a second Moore — national record-setting wide receiver Kirby — joining Kellen at Boise State, where he hopes to play three years catching passes from his older brother.

Legion ball loses ally

George dies at 71 after yearlong cancer battle

YAKIMA, Wash. –  He was a veteran, an insurance and real estate professional, a family man and a volunteer for many worthy causes. But most Yakima residents will remember Gary George Sr. as a true friend of youth baseball.

George, who died Thursday at the age of 71 after a year-old battle with cancer, was a prominent figure in American Legion Baseball at both the state and local levels.

He has been one of the reasons Yakima has remained a prominent and popular site for state, regional and even national American Legion Baseball tournaments. He has chaired the Yakima Valley Sports Commission. But his singular accomplishment might well have been the expansion of the Junior Legion baseball program not only in the Yakima Valley, but around the state.

“I don’t think people realize how big Legion baseball is in the state, and how much time Gary put in to help it grow and make it a success,” said Selah and Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak coach Mike Archer. “It could be a full-time job, and it would be a full-time job without pay, but he did it. He was extremely loyal to the program and the players and coaches involved.”

George first got involved in American Legion Baseball in the 1970s, when he was one of the founding fathers of the Pepsi Pak program and also became the local representative to the state American Legion Baseball commission. He later chaired the commission from 1991 to 2005, and was instrumental in helping Yakima host the American Legion World Series in both 1978 and 2001.

“He was actually Yakima’s best friend when it came to the state American Legion board,” said Mel Moore, longtime Yakima Youth Baseball supporter and organizer. “He always took (Yakima’s) side.”

George also helped improve the Yakima program enhance its state and national prowess by helping develop the Junior Legion program as a feeder system for the Senior Legion teams.

“I can always remember him saying he was really happy our league had developed the ‘B’ program,” said Bob Garretson, who spent 14 years coaching the Yakima Beetles during their nationally prominent heyday of the 1970s and 1980s and then 17 years heading up the Yakima Valley Community College program.

“He was always about what’s best for the kids.”

A celebration of George’s life will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian in Yakima, where he served as a church elder.

YVCC sweeps on road

PENDLETON, Ore. — LeMar Anglin scored 18 points to lead a balanced attack and Yakima Valley subdued Blue Mountain 74-68 in an Eastern Region men’s game Friday night.

Nico Sandoval had 13 and Rico Wilkins and Jody Johnson added 12 each with the latter grabbing 10 rebounds as the sixth-ranked Yaks improved to 5-1 in region play and 16-4 overall.

Yakima Valley shot only 41 percent (30 for 73), but held the Timberwolves (3-3, 9-11) to 34 percent while forcing 25 turnovers.

YVCC’s margin would have been larger had the Yaks made more than 12 of  their 21 free throws.

There were 13 lead changes and eight ties.

Yakima Valley continues region play today at Treasure Valley.
