Hydroplanes heading to Middle East

January 13, 2009 by Marcus Michelson

The American Boat Racing Association, the sanctioning body for unlimited hydroplane racing, announced it will hold a season-ending race in Doha, Qatar, starting in 2009, The Seattle Times reported.

This is something that probably makes sense in this time of economic uncertainty. Even larger racing organizations such as Formula One are concentrating efforts on the Mideast. They simply need to go where the money is.

That being said, it does create a bit of a “one-of-these-things-is-not-like-the-other” situation. As of Tuesday, the 2009 unlimited schedule has stops scheduled for Qatar, the Tri-Cities, Seattle, Detroit, San Diego and Madison, Ind.

The Tri-Cities race is set for July 24-29. Seafair will be the weekend of Aug. 1-2.
