First-place Yaks cruise to win
January 31, 2009 by YH-R Sports
PENDLETON, Ore. — Christina Gough scored a season-high 21 points as Yakima Valley maintained its Eastern Region lead with a 91-69 rout of Blue Mountain on Friday night.
Nicole DeRosier continued her offensive surge with 16 points and Brittany Weaver added 11 for third-ranked YVCC (6-0, 15-5).
Natalie Hansen scored 18 to lead Blue Mountain (0-6, 2-13).
“We’ve been waiting for a game like this from Christina,” Yaks coach Cody Butler said. “She can really shoot it. She was 5 for 7 from 3-point range, and we were pretty close to 50 percent as a team in the second half.”

Sculley, Peltier 1-2 in dive meet
January 31, 2009 by YH-R Sports
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Davis divers Jeremey Sculley and Randy Peltier both posted season-best totals in finishing 1-2 in a Central Washington League 4A diving meet Friday at the Central Washington University pool.
Sculley had a total of 434.0 points for 11 dives, while Peltier had a 428.8 total.
Both totals were well above the state-qualifying standard of 300, but each diver had already qualified for state prior to this meet.
West Valley’s Trent Miller won the 3A meet to earn one of two state berths up for grabs. That was determined since there will be no diving competition at next week’s district meet in Vancouver.
Miller had a total of 225.75. Hanford’s B.J. Deatherage was second at 212.45 to nab the other berth.

Central still standing after slugfest
January 29, 2009 by Roger Underwood
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Greg Sparling called it “an old-fashioned street fight,” and the analogy fit in more ways than one.
It wasn’t pretty. Nor was it fluid, crisp or any number of other adjectives that might describe an especially well-played basketball game.
But to Central Washington’s credit, not to mention the Wildcats’ everlasting relief, it was the only team standing after Thursday night’s 72-69 scuffle with Northwest Nazarene in Nicholson Pavilion.
And the difference might well have been CWU’s ability to take a punch.
There clearly were cobwebs after the 20-point beat-down suffered five days earlier at the hands of Western Washington — the first time in 49 years that the Vikings had abused Central so badly in Ellensburg. The Crusaders, meanwhile, had been leveled by 30 the same evening at Montana State Billings.
So despite the sometimes sluggish, sometimes sloppy performance, Sparling’s squad maintained its position on the GNAC’s upper tier at 5-2 while improving to 11-4 overall.
Next up is a Saturday visit to Seattle Pacific, a team Central beat 77-62 at home on Jan. 15. The Falcons (5-1, 12-5) haven’t lost since, though, and along with Western were ranked ahead of No. 5 CWU in this week’s Division II regional poll.
Had it not been for Johnny Spevak and Chris Scott on Thursday, the Wildcats might presently be in free fall.
Spevak complemented his typical lock-down defense with a season-high and team-leading 15 points. Scott, a backup point guard, produced eight points, six assists and four steals — none of which loomed larger than a mid-court fleecing of NNU’s Anthony Golden with 2:37 left.
He then fed Matt Penoncello for a breakaway layup for a 70-65 Central lead.
“I read what the other guy likes to do when he brings the ball upcourt,” said Scott, a 5-foot-8 junior transfer from South Puget Sound CC. “This particular player, he likes to spin. I anticipated that and was able to make the steal.”
Said Sparling, “Chris Scott was huge. That was his best game as a Wildcat.”
Still, the Crusaders (2-5, 10-7) stuck with Central like a bad cold.
Sustained by 9-for-17 3-point shooting (53 percent), they never trailed by more than six. And after a bucket by 6-7 Kendall Gielow (who led all scorers with 23 points) with 2:18 to play, NNU was within 70-67.
Jake Beitinger scored inside at 1:56 for CWU, but the Crusaders’ Tyler Roberts broke free for a layup at 1:42.
Central’s Colton Monti and Penoncello missed 3-balls in remaining time, and Nazarene had a shot at overtime in the final three seconds. But a triple by Joel Ryman, who two years ago starred for the Community Colleges of Spokane, missed and Penoncello ran down the rebound.
“They always play us like that,” said Spevak. “It doesn’t matter what their record is or where we play, they make things tough for us.”
Said Sparling, “It was just one of those games. Neither team could get started. It was 1-0 forever.”
Or the first 6:18, in fact, until Beitinger dunked. Though Nazarene missed its first 15 shots and didn’t score until 12:38 of the first half, the Wildcats had only a 5-0 lead.

Trio shares CWAC wrestling title
January 29, 2009 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA, Wash. — At the start of the season, CWAC wrestling coaches were in agreement: The chase for the dual title was wide open with considerable parity among the upper-level teams.
Turns out that was right on the mark.
Toppenish, Ellensburg and Selah all won their final dual matches Thursday night to finish in a three-way tie for the conference crown at 8-1.
It wasn’t easy as Selah rallied to beat Othello 41-29, Toppenish won the last five matches to top Ephrata 39-31 and defending champ Ellensburg defeated East Valley 49-25.
Moses Lake (6-0) wrapped up the CBBN Columbia title with a 51-14 win over Sunnyside (4-2), and Davis finished 3-3 with a 50-22 victory at home over Pasco.
In the SCAC West, Granger closed out its 6-0 run with a 60-13 win over Cle Elum as the Spartans extended their streak of conference titles to four.
Zillah finished second at 5-1 with a 43-27 victory over Naches Valley.
