WV stakes claim to state berth

January 28, 2009 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — West Valley may have entered Tuesday’s district championship as the top seed, but the Rams had no room for error if they wanted to earn a return trip to state.

With just one state berth available in the Class 3A-2A event, West Valley needed to be on top of its game to advance, and that’s just what the Rams accomplished at Nob Hill Lanes.

Mandy Cramer, Alyssa Deaton and Amber Pearson all posted 300-plus series, and West Valley had three solid Baker games to score a comfortable victory over Selah to win the district title.

West Valley finished with 2,254 pins, with Selah next at 2,202.

The results weren’t nearly as good for the 4A regular-season champion as Eisenhower fell 17 pins short of a return trip to state.

Kennewick easily won the district title with 2,334 pins, with Pasco’s 2,242 total edging Moses Lake (2,238) and Ike (2,226) for the second team state berth.

Among individual state qualifiers, Davis’ Erin Socha grabbed one of four 4A berths, while Selah’s Holly Wood and Danielle Erickson finished 1-2 to earn the 3A-2A spots.

Cramer led West Valley’s team effort, with games of 195 and 178, giving her the highest two-game total at 373. Deaton had a 334 series, and Pearson a 318 as the Rams rolled games of 776 and 806 to build a 52-pin lead (1,582-1,530) over Selah heading into the Baker games.

The Rams then had Bakers of 191, 168, 140 and 173 to hold off the Vikings.

In 4A, Pasco opened with an 844 game and that gave them an early 26-pin lead over Ike, which was unable to chip away. The Cadets had team games of 818 and 792, and Baker games of 160, 152 and 168, but a 136 in the second Baker game hurt the Cadets’ attempt to rally, even when Pasco closed with a 131 Baker.

Wood and Erickson were the only 3A-2A bowlers topping 500 in their three games to determine individual state qualifiers. Wood had a 530 total (169-175-186), and Erickson was at 521 (168-148-205).

Erickson’s 205 in the final game allowed her to overtake teammate Ashley Keller for the final state berth as Keller closed with a 155 for a 479 total.

Wood and Erickson both qualified for state last season, finishing 26th and 27th, respectively, and were the 3A-2A’s top average bowlers this season, with Wood at 176.7 and Erickson at 173.7.

In 4A, Socha had a three-game total of 522 pins (194-160-168) to finish third, trailing Moses Lake’s Shanice Brice (622) and Wenatchee’s Savanna Lindenmuth (534).

Ike’s Erin Purdy, the top 4A bowler during the season at 193.5, was eighth at 487. Teammate Kayla Nickles was sixth at 505, nine pins off a state berth.
