YVCC rallies, beats Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA — Rico Wilkins scored 24 points, including the deciding free throw with 53 seconds to play, and Yakima Valley subdued Walla Walla 83-82 in an Eastern Region game Wednesday night.
After Wilkins’ free throw gave YVCC (3-1 region, 14-4 overall) an 83-79 lead, Cameron Stevenson hit a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left for the Warriors (1-2, 8-7). The Yaks missed a shot with seven seconds left and Walla Walla missed a 30-footer at t he buzzer.
“Any time you come to Walla Walla and get a win, you have to feel good about it,” said YVCC coach Ray Funk, whose team overcame a 38-23 first-half deficit.
Nico Sandoval added 13 points and five assists. The Yaks host Columbia Basin in a women’s (2 p.m.) and men’s (4 p.m.) doubleheader Saturday.
