CONNELL — Eric Perez scored 13 points, and was 8 for 8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter as Highland upset seventh-ranked Connell 54-49 in a first-round SCAC District game Thursday night.
The Scotties (13-8), the No. 4 seed from the West, will meet Burbank at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Finley’s River View High School in a winner-to-state semifinal. Connell (17-4) will face a loser-out game against Mabton.
Against the East champion Eagles, Highland took a 36-35 lead into the fourth quarter and expanded it thanks to 12 for 14 free throw shooting.
Perez, the only Scottie scorer in double figures, added seven assists and four steals.
Aaron Hawkins scored 19 points and Cole Thompson 11 for Connell.
NACHES VALLEY 47, RIVER VIEW 44: At Naches, Adam Ranger totaled 17 points and 11 rebounds as the West champion Rangers survived a scoreless second quarter to reach the district semis.
NV (15-6) will oppose Granger in a winner-to-state game at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at River View High School.
Down 24-16 at halftime, Naches Valley moved to within 32-26 at the end of the third period and closed with a 21-12 fourth that saw Justin Weigel go 6 for 6 from the foul line.
Chaz Ludwig and Marcus Martin scored 11 points each to lead the Panthers, who hit a 3-pointer with time running out.
GRANGER 66, WAHLUKE 56: At Mattawa, Mitchell Zapien’s 16 points led the Spartans into the tournament semifinals.
Granger (15-6) meets Naches Valley at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at River View High School in a winner-to-state game.
Ahead 30-26 at halftime, the Spartans widened their lead when Brandon Oswalt hit three 3-pointers from the latter part of the third quarter through t he early portion of the fourth. Granger made 5 of 7 free throws to maintain its margin.
Ben Villa had 12 points, Oswalt 11 and Mychal Lopez 10 for the Spwartans. Wahluke’s Aaron Neary led all scorers with 20.
BURBANK 67, MABTON 65: At Mabton, the Vikings rallied from a 13-point deficit with 4 minutes left but could not overcome 14-for-17 fourth-quarter free throw shooting by Burbank.
Mabton will meet Connell at 2 p.m. Saturday at River View in a loser-out game.
Neal Shuck led the Coyotes with 22 points and was 10 for 13 from the foul line in the final period. Frankie Smith had 18 points and Kristian Carrasco 16 for Mabton.
