SELAH — Ramon Ramirez’s 14 points led four players in double figures as Toppenish defeated Selah 62-55 in the first round of the CWAC district tournament on Friday.

Patrick Peters came up with 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Wildcats, who outscored Selah 22-14 in the final period.

Toppenish (12-10) moves on to the semifinals and will face top-seeded Wapato (15-5) at 7 p.m. today at East Valley High School.

Selah (11-10) is still alive for the district’s third state berth and will play next Thursday against today’s Quincy-Grandview loser.

QUINCY — The Jackrabbits overcame Ben Luce’s 28-point outburst by making 15 of 17 free throws in the final period.

Eric Martin’s 24 points led Quincy (14-7), which plays Grandview (13-7) in today’s 5 p.m. semifinal at East Valley High School.

Ellensburg (10-12) moves into the third-place bracket and will play today’s Toppenish-Wapato loser next Thursday at 7 p.m.

YVCC’s Wilkins named NWAACC East MVP

Butler named women’s coach of the year ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima Valley guard Rico Wilkins was named the men’s most valuable player, and the Yaks’ Cody Butler was named women’s coach of the year to highlight the NWAACC Eastern Region all-league teams announced Friday.

Wikins, a 6-foot sophomore guard, is the Yaks’ leading scorer, averaging 15.8 points, along with 1.8 steals per game in helping Yakima Valley to a 22-6 record and the No. 5 ranking in the NWAACC.

He was joined on the first team by teammates Jody Johnson and Nico Sandoval. Johnson, a 6-4 sophomore forward, averages a double-double with 13.4 points and 10.4 rebounds, and Sandoval, a 5-9 sophomore guard from Davis High, averages 11.3 points and 4.1 assists.

Butler guided Yakima Valley’s women, ranked third in the NWAACC, to a perfect 14-0 record in region play, and a 23-5 mark overall.

That team was led in scoring by first-team region selection Nichole DeRosier. The 5-9 freshman averages 13.9 points, highlighted by 43-percent shooting from 3-point range (60 of 138).

Named to the second team were 5-8 sophomore guards Chelsey Nill and Kaitlin McBride. Nill averages 11.8 points and 3.7 rebounds, and McBride averages 9.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.8 steals.

Also named to the women’s first team was former Prosser High standout Jordan Brown. The 5-8 freshman guard was the leading scorer for Columbia Basin College, averaging 15.6 points. She also averages 3.3 steals, 2.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

Wilkins, Johnson, Sandoval, McBride and Nill were also chosen to play in the NWAACC All-Star game March 15 at Pierce Community College in Tacoma.

Schneider helps CWU past Saint Martin’s

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Kevin Schneider went 5-for-5 with three runs scored to highlight Central Washington’s 16-hit attack as the Wildcats won their home opener, 14-8 over Saint Martin’s on Friday at Tomlinson Field.

The win in the CWU Invitational, snapped a season-opening eight-game losing streak for Central, and also ended a five-game winning streak for the Saints (5-6).

Later Friday, Western Oregon beat Saint Martin’s 2-1 in 12 innings.
