CWU men get revenge
February 27, 2009 by YH-R Sports
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Early last month, Central Washington lost at Alaska Anchorage in large part because of the Seawolves’ 3-point shooting.
In Thursday’s rematch at Nicholson Pavilion, those same Seawolves not only couldn’t match that previous prowess, they couldn’t even keep up with the Wildcats’ Colton Monti.
Monti nailed eight 3-pointers — two more than Alaska Anchorage’s team — en route to a 27-point night that powered Central to a 76-65 victory in a GNAC men’s basketball game.
“Colton Monti stepped up big for us,” Central coach Greg Sparling of the guard who made nothing but 3-pointers, hitting 8 of 12 from distance, with one miss from inside the line.
“That’s the great thing about this team, you never know who’s going to step up, and tonight, he stepped up,” Sparling said.
Central (10-3 GNAC, 16-5) had pretty good balance behind Monti, with three other players scoring in double figures, including 13 from Brandon Foote.
“That was a good all-around team effort,” Sparling said. “Everybody stepped up and did what they needed to do.”
Particularly when it came to defending the 3-pointer.
In the January meeting, Alaska Anchorage made 13 of 17 3-pointers. Thursday, it made just 6 of 14.
“They scorched the 3-point line up there,” Sparling said. “We made some adjustments tonight.”
Central also welcomed by Jake Beitinger, who had been sidelined the past few games because of an injury. He had six points and three assists.
Jeremiah Trueman led the Seawolves (7-6, 13-13) with 27 points and six rebounds.
