Sunnyside Christian’s Wagenaar earns 300th victory

TOPPENISH — Sunnyside Christian boys basketball coach Dean Wagenaar earned his 300th career win Tuesday night when his Knights dispatched Yakama Tribal 69-19 in a Greater Columbia 1B League game.

Matt Crabtree contributed 18 points and nine rebounds and Steven Broersma added 14 points for nine rebounds for the Knights (6-1, 7-9), who conclude league play Saturday at home against Trout Lake-Glenwood.

In 15 seasons, Wagenaar has posted a 300-75 record at Sunnyside Christian.

Knights clinch GCB title

TOPPENISH — Melanie Van Wingerden scored 23 points and helped Sunnyside Christian clinch the Greater Columbia 1B League title Tuesday night with a 72-19 win over Yakama Tribal.

Hilari Bosma added 11 points and Kelly Newhouse 10 for the Knights, who improved to 7-0 in league with one GCB game left and 12-4 overall.

BASKETBALL

Globetrotter set for Yakima visit

Aundre “Hot Shot” Branch, a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, will make an appearance at Robertson Elementary School on Thursday to present the Globetrotters’ character education and active lifestyle programs to the students.

Branch’s visit will also help promote the Globetrotters’ appearance at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23 in the SunDome.
