Yaks two-time Big Bend
March 29, 2009 by YH-R Sports
MOSES LAKE, Wash. — Hannah Kranz drove in three runs and pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts in the first game and Brittany Dorn had five RBI in the second as Yakima Valley swept Big Bend 12-4 and 10-7 Saturday in an Eastern Region doubleheader.

In the second game, Dorn had a three-run homer in YVCC’s seven-run second inning added a two-run double in a three-run fifth.
Sherwood had three more hits, completing her day a combined 6-for-9, and Kranz was 3-for-4 in the nightcap.
Big Bend fell to 0-8 in region play and 0-18 overall.
Yakima Valley resumes region action by hosting Columbia Basin at 2 p.m. Friday.

Rain forces trucks to race to Monday
March 28, 2009 by The Associated Press
MARTINSVILLE, Va. — The truck race scheduled for Saturday at Martinsville Speedway was postponed because of steady rain and has been rescheduled for noon Monday.
Rick Crawford won the pole during morning qualifying in a light drizzle, but the rain increased in intensity as the 2 p.m. starting time approached. It was called an hour later.
Crawford won the pole with a lap at 94.737 mph in his Ford. He’ll start on the inside of the front row with Shane Sieg to his outside. Sieg’s lap was at 94.326 mph in his Toyota.
The top five also includes Johnny Benson, Ron Hornaday Jr. and Colin Braun.
The pole is the sixth for Crawford in 301 career truck series starts, and he was not concerned with the prospect of seeing it postponed as the rain fell throughout the day.
“I don’t mind not racing if nobody else gets to,” he said.
The 0.526-mile oval does not have lights and can’t support night racing. The Goody’s 500 Sprint Cup race is scheduled for Sunday at the track.
Brawn flexes muscle in F1 qualifying
March 28, 2009 by The Associated Press
MELBOURNE, Australia — Brawn GP became the first Formula One team in 39 years to take the pole position in its debut race when Jenson Button secured the spot for Sunday’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
Button’s time of 1 minute, 26.202 seconds Saturday edged teammate Rubens Barrichello by three tenths of a second, giving the F1 newcomers both positions on the front row.
It was the fourth pole of Button’s career and completed a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the England-based team, which was threatened with extinction when former owner Honda pulled out of the sport after the 2008 season.

Before former Ferrari strategist and Honda team principal Ross Brawn took over the team from the Japanese automaker, Button and Barrichello faced the prospect of looking for new jobs and watching this weekend’s action on television.
“Going from not having a drive and no future in racing to putting it on pole here is just amazing,” Button said. “This is a great moment, not the most important of the weekend, but a great start.”
“This is where we deserve to be, after the difficult times we have had,” the 29-year-old British driver added. “Roll on the season, I am so excited about this year.”
The Brawn performance may be a welcome taste of novelty for F1 fans, but rival teams were less enthusiastic. The team is racing under appeal, with a protest over the design of its rear diffuser to be heard by the sport’s governing body FIA after the Malaysian Grand Prix, jeopardizing any points gained in the season’s first two GP races. Williams and Toyota are also subject to the appeal.
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel will start from third on the grid at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit, ahead of BMW’s Robert Kubica and Williams’ Nico Rosberg. Toyota pair Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli qualified sixth and eighth respectively, but were sent to the back of the grid after stewards ruled the rear wings on their cars were too flexible.
None of the top six drivers are using the KERS power-boost system this year, illustrating how problematical the technology is proving for teams as they balance its power boost against its additional weight and effect on car design.
The highest of the KERS runners is Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, who will start from sixth, one place ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen, who had a hydraulic failure in pre-qualifying practice. Australia’s Mark Webber will start from eighth in his Red Bull.
Brawn’s achievement in taking the pole marked the first time a team debuted there since Jackie Stewart’s effort for Tyrell at the 1970 Canadian GP.
It had other teams fearing that Brawn may run away with the championship this season, unless its rear diffuser is deemed illegal.
“If they carry on like that, they will win the championship by the middle of the year,” Massa said.
“Its hard to believe a month ago they were sitting at home, now they are ready to fight for the world championship,” Renault’s Fernando Alonso said after qualifying 10th.
Another disappointment was reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton, who will start from 18th. The McLaren driver only scraped into second qualifying by five hundredths of a second and then elected to change his gearbox and not take part in the second session. The automatic penalty for the gearbox change means he will start from the back, with only the penalized Toyotas behind him.
In 2006, when he had the pole, Button eventually finished 10th, blowing his engine within sight of the finish.
“Hopefully it will go better than 2006, I’m sure it will,” he said.
It was the first time that one team had claimed both front-row positions for the Australian GP since Barrichello and his then Ferrari teammate Michael Schumacher in 2004.

COLUMBIA BASIN BIG NINE
FAVORITES
RICHLAND might have finished “only” fourth in the state playoffs last season after winning the championship in 2007. But the Bombers are loaded for 2009. As West Valley coach Klayton Wyckoff put it, “In the 16 years I’ve been in the program here we’ve had two D-I players. Richland, this season, has four.” KAMIAKIN, HANFORD and SOUTHRIDGE figure to be tough, too.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
As coach Pete Orgill put it, DAVIS does not have “an Evan Morris to put out there. We don’t have a big stud like we’ve had.” Morris, a right-handed pitcher who signed with Harvard, was the Pirates’ lone first-team all-leaguer, and the Pirates were extremely young behind him. And Orgill is quick to note that they’re still young, though seniors Brian Villegas, Michael Calderon and Greg Hata will be key. Orgill said Davis will be strong defensively but inexperienced on the mound. … EISENHOWER returns second-team all-leaguer Tyler Berman among five starters, and this year coach Bob Oliphant will use Berman on the mound as well as his trademark shortstop position. Joining him will be junior second baseman Will Scott, also an all-league second-teamer, junior catcher Seth Kline, junior center fielder Max Kovatch, and sophomore pitcher Nick Lombardi. As with Davis, pitching experience is a concern for Oliphant. … SUNNYSIDE will build around returners Jacob Salcedo, Justin Reyes, Tristan Abbott and Hector Mendez. Coach Terry Shines said he had two pitchers who threw in the 80s (mph) last year, and is hoping for capable replacements from among Reyes and Abbott. Without dominant pitching, the Grizzlies will try to force the opposition to put the ball in play and then play solid defense. … Cory Urquhart, a first-team all-leaguer last year, will lead WEST VALLEY along with returning starters Tucker Leppa, Kyle Siekawitch and Kyle Jones. Seniors Brad Andreas and Nick Clark will see significant playing time at catcher, and another senior, Kurtis Wiles, will play second and hit leadoff. Coach Klayton Wyckoff said the Rams have no dominant pitcher, but do have an abundance of moundsmen capable of several innings each. Justin Johnson, a junior right-handed transfer from Washougal, should help.
CWAC
FAVORITES
SELAH. Eight returning starters, which included the top two pitchers from 2008, make the Vikings the team to beat. ELLENSBURG has four solid arms, however, and OTHELLO and EPHRATA could also contend.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
EAST VALLEY begins life without Komo — meaning left-handed pitching and hitting standout Kevin Komstadius, the Red Devils’ longtime franchise player who’s presently plying his trade at the University of Washington. So coach Jesse Benedetti will build around six seniors plus Ryan Schoonover and Jordan Cameron, all-league honorable mention picks as sophomores. Pitcher-catcher Jonathan Janis, a transfer, could also help. … ELLENSBURG coach Jim Klampher includes two all-league first-teamers among his five returning starters. Junior Ethan Sterkel led the Bulldogs with a near .600 batting average while senior outfielder Ben Luce was also a standout. Pitcher-outfielder Brendon Storey and shortstop Matt Herbert also return, and Klampher can count on Storey, Sterkel, Kramer Ferrell and D.J. Smith for capable mound work … Matt McKinstry takes over at GRANDVIEW after running the program at Tri-Cities Prep the past four years and will seek to get the Greyhounds into the playoffs. He will start with four primary starters from a year ago, including center fielder Josh Bertsch, catcher Ryan Moore, pitcher-first baseman K.C. Flores and pitcher Trent Mottice. Shortstop JoJo Garza and outfielder Anthony Perez, a freshman, also have looked promising. … PROSSER made the district playoffs last year and coach Kevin Cole has been encouraged by a 3-0 league start this season. With starters Craig Gustafson, Alex Romero, Cory Christen, Preston Yahne, Tyler Niemeyer, Scott Donovan, Cole Groom and T.J. Finn returning, Cole is hoping the Mustangs can challenge for the league’s fourth spot. … Last year’s SELAH roster differs only slightly from this year’s, with coach Mike Archer returning 12 varsity players and eight starters. Jake Fife and Justin Windsor were all-league first-teamers last year, excelling both on the mound, in the field (Fife plays shortstop when not pitching and Windsor plays third) and at bat. Trent Douglass, Alex Fickes, Trevor Heilman, Tyler Porter, Stephan Schmidt and Matt Snider also started — Fickes as a freshman and Snider, for the second year, as a sophomore. As if these players weren’t enough — Windsor, Fife, Snider and Porter received all-league acclaim of some level — Archer also likes the hitting potential of 6-foot-2, 170-pound freshman Kurt Lindemann. … TOPPENISH has nowhere to go but up after a 0-18 league record last year, but perhaps coach Jeff Place’s Wildcats can feed competitively off the basketball team’s run to a seventh-place state tournament trophy. … WAPATO made the playoffs last year and has six starters back from that team including second-team all-league pick Sean Pitt, a pitcher-first baseman. His father, coach Rhett Pitt, will also count on several athletes who contributed to the Wolves’ basketball success — Pitt, Willie Blodgett, Cody Nickoloff and Rigo Alvarado among them — to aid Wapato’s attempt to reach the upper half of the league standings.
SCAC WEST
FAVORITE
NACHES VALLEY. All five returning starters were all-league first or second team selections last year, and the Rangers have made the Class 1A state final four in each of the last two seasons.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Steve Schorzman, who pitched for Gonzaga and later in the Chicago White Sox system, takes over at CLE ELUM and will build around a handful of returners. Weather (the Warriors recently enjoyed their first outdoor practice) and illness (a whooping cough outbreak has postponed games until April 15) have stalled the Warriors. Seth Darling, Seth Reynolds, brothers Terence and Justin Cushing, and twins Cory and Jason Zapel are among those Schorzman will count on … GOLDENDALE made a strong postseason push under coach Lyle Stevens last year, losing to Naches Valley in the state quarterfinals, but lost the bulk of that team. Juniors Aaron Cochran, Cody Herin, Trevor Fields and Justin Garrigues return along with senior John Bartkowski. Stevens’ roster includes nine sophomores. … GRANGER went winless in league play last year, but coach Sam Nishi is planning on measurable improvement this time around. Senior Mychal Lopez, termed one of the league’s best pitchers by NV coach Bill Walker, will anchor the Spartans along with returners Teddy Walsey, Dillon Begay, Anthony Maldonado, Jesus Galvan and Brandon Oswalt. … HIGHLAND reached district under coach Nick Clark, and the Scotties have second-team all-leaguer Scott Podruzny back among eight returners. Trent Fuller was a third-team pick, but Clark received a blow when senior pitching ace Eli Mitchum, a second-team all-leaguer last spring, was lost for the season with a foot injury. … NACHES VALLEY graduated two all-leaguers from last year’s team, but have five back including Adam Ranger and Thomas Wilcox, who will be the top two pitchers. Ethan Flory, Joe Mills, Brandon Gillespie were also all-stars, and will join J.R. Weigel among the offensive threats. Flory plays center field, Mills right, Gillespie will catch, Wilcox will play a variety of infield spots and Weigel will play shortstop. … ZILLAH, a playoff participant last year, could be among the league’s most improved teams this spring with seven returning starters. Sophomore Blake Dasso will be the top pitcher for coach Kekoa Gabriel and will also play the outfield, having been a second-team all-leaguer as a freshman. Jared and Jacob Olivas, Rafael Guzman, Jared Ziegler, Austin Rodriguez and Trevor Oswalt are other veterans.
CLASS 2B AND 1B
KITTITAS will get a delayed start in the North-Central 2B League due to a whooping cough outbreak. … LA SALLE has a new coach in Mike Moore and will build around pitcher-center fielder Ryan Kilseimer, its lone senior. Dylan Sattler, Ross Anderton, Nick Butterfield, Sam Glazier, Dan Brusic and Alec Boyle figure prominently in Moore’s plans. … LYLE-WISHRAM hopes to make a substantial postseason run behind returning all-leaguers Mike Eiesland and Ty Freemantle. Senior Mike Murphy, who also ran track last year, is concentrating on baseball this spring. … RIVERSIDE CHRISTIAN returns Greater Columbia B all-leaguer Isaac Bass for coach Phil Pettit. Bass hit .487 last year and will also pitch. Steve and Mike Stein, transfers from Ellensburg, also figure to contribute along with returnee Jason Bjur.
Back in their familiar roles

Viks, Rangers again the favorites in CWAC and SCAC, respectively ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — For some programs it’s a way of life, for others an aberration.
Some welcome it while others seek to avoid it, or pretend it doesn’t exist.

Selah’s Justin Windsor, shown here in a state regional game, returns for the Vikings this spring after earning all-CWAC honors a season ago. (Andy Sawyer/Yakima Herald-Republic file)
And while it’s true that being the favorites of their respective leagues will not spot Selah or Naches Valley either runs or victories this baseball season, the unavoidable fact is that both the Vikings and Rangers return enough in both quantity and quality to warrant team-to-beat labels in the CWAC and SCAC West, respectively.
It’s nothing new to either.
Last year, for example, Selah shared the favorite’s role with East Valley and Ellensburg, but won the league title by two games over the Red Devils, Bulldogs and Ephrata.
EV, led by University of Washington recruit Kevin Komstadius, advanced to the Class 2A championship game where it fell to Sehome, the program that denied Selah the title in 2007.
In the SCAC West, NV more than lived up to its favorite’s role, running the league table at 12-0 and reaching the Class 1A state semifinals.
The Rangers have made the 1A final four in each of the last two seasons under coach Bill Walker. Selah has been among the 3A elite five times since 1998 and once in its two seasons at Class 2A under coach Mike Archer.
None of which would be especially relevant for this year were it not for the fact that Walker returns five starters from last season’s 22-4-1 team and Archer has eight returning from his 21-4 squad.
All of NV’s returning starters earned all-league first or second team honors, as did four of Selah’s.
This is not to declare the regular season over, of course, nor does it suggest that either Selah or Naches Valley be penciled in as league champions and top district seeds.
Others in both leagues will have plenty to say about that — “Ellensburg’s pitching is unbelievable,” one CWAC coach noted.
On the other hand, prospects look positive for both the Viks and Rangers.
“Our expectations are always high,” Archer said. “We do believe we play in a tough league, and we expect a dogfight at the top.”
Plus there’s the one-two pitching punch of Jake Fife and Justin Windsor. Both are senior right-handers who are also standout hitters and key position players when not on the mound.
NV, too, has experienced and effective hurlers in Adam Ranger and Thomas Wilcox — senior righties each went 6-1 last spring. Both would occupy prime lineup spots when not pitching had not Ranger suffered a broken left wrist. Wilcox will play a variety of positions when not throwing.
Lucas Forgey, a second-team all-league pitcher last year as a junior, is not in school at Naches Valley.
Nonetheless, as Zillah coach Kekoa Gabriel said, “The gold standard in this league is Naches.”
Then again, as Selah’s Archer has said, “We still have to play the game.”

Spokane Sweeps YVCC
