Making a pitch for greatness — CWU ace Vlahovich keys record season
April 29, 2009 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — At first glance, the dramatic improvement of a college athlete from one year to the next usually involves one or more dramatic occurrences.
A late growth spurt, perhaps. An unwavering devotion to the weight room. Or maybe it’s just a matter of the proverbial light bulb coming on, illuminating the fine points of competition and making clear essential aspects of success that had been previously obscured by more obvious but less meaningful elements.
For Central Washington’s Linse Vlahovich, however, the secret to a record-setting senior fastpitch season has been more a testament to the time-honored practice of hard work.
That and the benefit of another year of experience, plus the addition of another weapon for her ongoing battle with hitters.
“I did learn another pitch,” Vlahovich said in a recent telephone interview. “I’ve started throwing a screwball.”
But before that, before the 5-foot-10 University High of Spokane product began compiling season totals which presently include a 21-7 record and 2.17 earned-run average, she devoted substantial time and effort toward making her final season her best.
“I spent a lot of time over the summer losing weight and running,” she said. “Plus I’ve learned the new pitch, and I’ve also started throwing an inside curveball.
“And this year, I have way more confidence than I’ve ever had. My coaches and my teammates, and also my family, have also done a really good job of boosting me. It all makes a huge difference.”
Which in turn has made a huge difference for the Wildcats.
Though Central lost both games of a Sunday doubleheader at Western Oregon, thereby necessitating a sweep of four season-ending games at Montana State Billings to win the conference title and accompanying Division II playoff berth, it has been a season of unprecedented heights for both Vlahovich and the Wildcats.
Her season victory total is a school record, and so is the team’s.
Last year Vlahovich was 10-13 with an ERA of 3.16.
“She really wasn’t bad last year — she started 0-6,” said her coach, Gary Frederick. “But I think the differences this year are just being a year older, the hard work she’s put in and the relationship she has with our pitching coach (Caitlyn Cornell).
“Losing the weight was her choice, something she felt she needed to do and wanted to do. And I couldn’t be happier for Linse, to see her being rewarded for all her hard work.”
Frederick said Vlahovich typically throws 62 to 63 miles an hour, and if that doesn’t sound initially impressive remember that the pitching rubber is only 43 feet from home plate.
“Not many baseball players would want to stand in in that situation,” said Frederick, who coached that sport at CWU for 11 years. “The ball gets on you real quick. Sara Badgley threw 63 to 64 when we had her (2004-05, ’07), but Linse has many more pitches.”
She also has no fewer than three GNAC pitcher-of-the-week awards this season.
A season in which Vlahovich has won her last six decisions, has pitched three shutouts among 16 complete games and has fanned 174 while walking 63 has not only buoyed Central, it has boosted her conspicuously in the program’s all-time rankings.
Vlahovich ranks first in wins (44), appearances (100), starts (76), innings (505 2/3) and batters faced (2,301) and is tied for first in shutouts (nine).
She has also set single-season records for wins (21) and innings (193 1/3) and complete games (19).
But the most fun, Vlahovich said, has been playing on a winning team.
“The success we’ve had as a group has made me happiest of anything that’s happened,” she said. “It’s the best experience I’ve had since I started playing softball when I was really little.”
Beyond this season, and school, Vlahovich hopes to student teach next fall and then become a middle school teacher and coach. Eventually she’d like to be an athletic director.
But first things first, meaning a strong finish to the season. A perfect one, in fact, would mean CWU’s first postseason appearance.
“That would be an absolutely huge step for the program,” she said, “and it’s my goal to get to experience that.”
And with an added year of experience and another pitch in her repertoire, plus the benefits of an offseason of hard work, the last fastpitch season might well be the best fastpitch season — both for Linse Vlahovich and the Wildcats.
Central recruits led by former YVCC standout
April 29, 2009 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — A familiar name and a big frame were among four men’s basketball recruits who have signed with Central Washington, according to coach Greg Sparling.
Jody Johnson, a mainstay on two highly-successful Yakima Valley teams, will join the Wildcats along with 6-foot-9, 280-pound Coby Gibler of Highline Community College.
Austin Dunn, a 6-3 guard from Clackamas Community College and Najee Ali, a graduate-to-be from Rainier Beach High School, were also announced Wednesday as letter of intent signees.
Johnson, 6-4, was a key component of YVCC’s 2008 NWAACC Tournament title team and this past season helped the Yaks to a third-place finish.
He averaged 13.1 points and 10.5 rebounds a game in 2008-09, compiling 16 double doubles in 31 games.
“You could pretty much pencil in a double-double every time he went on the floor,” Yakima Valley coach Ray Funk said. “He and Nico (Sandoval, who is still weighing his four-year school options) have been the rocks of Gibraltar for our program the last two years.”
Gibler, meanwhile, averaged 14.1 points and 9.9 boards for Highline and produced 14 double doubles in 28 games.
The son of Brant Gibler, who starred on the University of Puget Sound’s 1976 NCAA Division II national championship team and was an eighth-round draftee of the Portland Trail Blazers, he’s is also a distant relative of ex-Seattle SuperSonic standout Jack Sikma.
“He has very good hands, very soft hands,” Sparling said, “and has a nice touch around the rim. Right now he’s packing a little too much weight, but he’s very fundamentally sound and just knows how to play.”
Gibler prepped at Bainbridge, and in 2007 teamed with Gonzaga’s Steven Gray as the Spartans finished second in the Class 3A state tournament to O’Dea.
Of Johnson, Sparling said, “Jody’s one of the guys who we say in the business gets the dirty work done. He’s not flashy, but at the end of the game you look at his stat line and it’s loaded up pretty well. He’s a kid who’s been in winning programs at YVCC and Franklin (which won the 2006 Class 4A state championship).”
Central has now signed seven recruits, including ex-Davis star Humberto Perez along with junior college transfers J.C. Cook (Clackamas) and Toussaint (T.J.) Tyler (Tacoma).
Mortensen steps down at YVCC
April 29, 2009 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — Ken Mortensen’s fifth season as Yakima Valley’s baseball coach will be his last.
Mortensen’s resignation, to be effective at the end of the season, was confirmed Wednesday by YVCC athletic director Ray Funk.
“We’re going to do a formal search (for a replacement),” Funk said, “but right now the state has a hiring freeze on and this position falls under that.
“We can’t hire until July 1, and of course that puts us behind in the recruiting game. When you make a hire of this magnitude, you want to get the right guy. But if that means following the state rules, then that’s what you do.”
The search will begin Friday, according to a college news release.
Funk said the decision for Mortensen to resign was solely the coach’s.
“This was strictly a family decision for Ken,” Funk said. “There was no pressure on him to leave, from myself or anyone else in the department.”
Said Mortensen, “It was strictly my decision. We’ve been talking about it all year. My (two) kids are getting to an age where I’d like to spend more time with them.”
Mortensen, who played two seasons for Bill Faller before assisting his predecessor, Bob Garretson Jr., is 96-118 counting Wednesday’s doubleheader loss at Wenatchee Valley.
The Yaks have been in contention for an NWAACC tournament bid this year, which would be their first under Mortensen, but Wednesday’s defeats left them 9-13 in Eastern Region play, 17-22 overall and seriously hurt their chances.
Mortensen, 44, had hinted prior to this season that he might step down at its conclusion. He cited the conflict between his coaching job, which is a part-time position, his full-time job with a hop processing company in Sunnyside, and his family.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the players that I have come in contact with,” Mortensen said in the release, “the experience of recruiting players, and most of all the people at YVCC and the people throughout the NWAACC organization I have come to know and become friends with.”
Mortensen graduated from Grandview High School in 1983 and played two seasons at YVCC before moving on to Washington State where he played for Bobo Brayton. He assisted Garretson from 1993 through Garretson’s final season in 2004.
After starting his coaching career as a Grandview assistant in 1989, Mortensen led the Greyhounds from 1991-92. He then became Yakima Valley’s pitching coach under Garretson while also working in Stottleymyre camps from 1993-96, with the semi-pro Yakima Chiefs from 1996-99 and with the American Legion Yakima Pepsi Beetles in 2001.

Making a statement — Vikings fastpitch team getting prepared for postseason push
April 28, 2009 by Roger Underwood
SELAH, Wash. — As difficult as it was to believe given the weather, May is just around the corner and with it comes opportunities for Valley fastpitch teams to mount a postseason push.

Selah pitcher Monica Stout delivers a pitch against East Valley in the first game of their doubleheader Tuesday at Selah. Stout threw a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in the opener, and also picked up the victory in the second game. (ANDY SAWYER/Yakima Herald-Republic)
And if Tuesday’s action was an indication, Selah seems primed for just such a surge.
On an afternoon that was much more like March than May, the Vikings stayed unbeaten in CWAC play with a 6-0, 13-3 sweep of East Valley on Selah’s field.
At 12-0 in league play, the Viks will on Saturday visit Ellensburg — which is tied for second at 11-1 along with Othello.
“We had a couple of blips on the radar,” Viks coach Bill Harris said, “but all in all the girls played well — especially in these conditions. When you hit a ball off the end of the bat today, it stung.”
That is, if the player still had feeling in her hands.
One who did, and who didn’t make the frigid conditions easier for EV to weather, was pitcher Monica Stout.
The junior right-hander went all 13 innings — the second game went only six — and followed a first-game two-hitter with a second-game four-hitter. She struck out nine in the opener, six in the nightcap and walked only one in each game.
Several strikeouts came on a baffling changeup, a slow floater which was especially effective considering Stout’s imposing array of hard stuff.
“I’ve been using that pitch for about four years now,” Stout said, “but I’ve really gotten it down this year. I’m confident that I can throw it for a strike pretty much any time I need to.”
She faced the minimum nine hitters through the first three innings of both contests and blanked the Red Devils (8-4 league) in 11 of 13 innings.
Selah’s offense, meanwhile, got three second-inning runs via Kendall Wangler’s run-scoring double and RBI singles by Stout and Natalie Fickes. Baylee Bunyard was 2-for-2 with a double, triple and RBI to key the Vikings.

After scoring a first-inning run in the nightcap, Selah broke it open with a seven-run third.
Jamie Alliston singled twice in the inning with the second hit scoring two runs. Jennifer Wane also had a two-run single.
Alliston and Morgan McCallister led a 15-hit assault with three safeties apiece. Alliston finished with three RBI and McCallister doubled, tripled and drove in two runs.
“We have some good teams in our league,” Harris said, “but Othello has been the benchmark for the last decade. They just do an excellent job with their program.”
But Tuesday, at least, Selah looked like a prime contender for one of the CWAC district’s three state tournament berths.
“That,” Stout said with a smile, “is our main goal.”
