Reilly lands at the top

CWU QB signs with Super Bowl champs
Mike Reilly’s disappointment at not getting drafted quickly faded as the former Central Washington University quarterback earned his NFL shot at the top of the heap.
Reilly agreed to terms with the Super Bowl-champion Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, just hours after he was passed over in the seven-round draft.
“I’m very excited,” Reilly in a telephone interview. “It was a disappointment not to have been drafted, but at the end of the day, when all is said and done, I’m still getting a chance, and that’s all I’ve ever wanted in the first place.”
Reilly’s Wildcat teammate, tight end Jared Bronson, agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins, Central coach Blaine Bennett said Sunday evening.
“It’s disappointing they didn’t get called in the draft, but it’s great for both of them,” Bennett said.
Former Eisenhower High and University of Washington center Juan Garcia also went undrafted, and as of late Sunday night, it wasn’t known if Garcia had received a free-agent offer from an NFL team.
Reilly not only didn’t have to wait long for an offer, he had multiple ones to choose from.
The record-setting signal-caller said there were three other teams also seeking his services — the Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders — and all three also made offers, but in the end, it was an easy decision, he said.
Reilly said the Steelers’ offer was substantially better than the other three, in addition to having an opportunity to go in and play on a Super Bowl championship team.
He will leave Thursday for Pittsburgh, where he’ll take part in a rookie orientation before returning to his home in the Tri-Cities.

Adkison wins wild playoff to capture Senior Invitational
April 26, 2009 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA, Wash. — First-round leader Bill Adkison, after carding a 6-over-par 76 on a windy SunTides morning, went home Saturday convinced he had no chance to win the second-annual Yakima Valley Seniors Invitational Tournament.
Later, he thought he’d return to watch the eventual winner.
Fortunately, he brought along his clubs.
And Adkison, who has played in final foursomes in numerous local amateur events over the years, found himself taking the title after five nerve-wracking holes in a sudden-death finish, besting defending champion Troy Wilmoth and long-hitting Joel Elder, at 50 the youngest entry in the event.
It was a gritty finish to a tournament that could have been won by four challengers earlier in the round, but wasn’t. Elder played solidly almost throughout, but then went four over par on the final three holes to settle into a tie with Adkison.
Wilmoth, who made up four strokes after carding a two-over first round score at Mount Adams on Friday, could have won it on the 18th hole had his 12-foot birdie putt fallen. It didn’t, putting him into the playoff.
Ward Jackson, whose Friday 75 had put him in contention, had but to par the 18th hole to grab the title after making a clutch 12-footer for par on the 17th.
Troubled by a misbehaving driver, Jackson opted for a utility club on the tee at 18, but the ball caught the wind and sailed out of bounds.
Which left Adkison, Wilmoth, and Elder in sudden-death.
The three matched par on the first four holes, but Wilmoth could have settled the issue on all the holes had a single putt dropped. None did.
Then, on the 440-yard fifth hole, Wilmoth’s tee ball sailed left, while Adkison and Elder split the fairway. Adkison’s approach left him at 25 feet from the apron, while Elder was left with a 35-footer.
Adkison’s two-putt finally settled the issue.
For Elder, a newcomer to high-tension golf, the sudden-death experience was thrilling. “I had my heart in my throat most of the time,” he said.
For Jackson, who could have won but for one errant tee shot, it was all just golf. Simply, golf.
“I couldn’t hit my driver all day,” he said. “So I figured I’d go with my utility club. Then the wind caught it.
“Oh well,” he brightened. “I’m young. I’ll be back.”
