TRACK: WV’s Jaeger takes third in 200

May 31, 2009 by

TACOMA, Wash. — As the long day wore on, and the third day of races began to soften her steely will, Chantel Jaeger reminded herself of one inspiring thing.

The 200-meter final may be her eighth race and at the end of a hot afternoon, but that’s her race.

“I’m always psyched for the 200,” said the West Valley sophomore. “I love running the corner, and that’s always the race I have the most confidence in.”

So after seven races, three of which came earlier Saturday, Jaeger flew to a career best of 24.99 seconds for third place in the Class 3A state track championships at Mount Tahoma High School. Jaeger nearly caught three-time 200 state champ Charnay Combs of Rainier Beach, who was second in 24.96.

“I finally got a 24,” said Jaeger, who was teased with a 25.01 time in Friday’s prelims. “It was real close and I thought I might have had second. I was sure tired with all the races, but I loved being in that many events here.”

Jaeger’s state workload was considerably more than last year when, as a freshman, she competed in the 200 but did not make the final. This time she qualified in four events and made the finals in all four — the 100, 200, 4×100 and 4×200.

After the Rams finished eighth in a loaded 4×200 in 1:46.50, Jaeger took on the 100 finalists and sped 12.39 for sixth. Less than an hour later, West Valley was back on the track for the 4×100 and settled for eighth.

Mikele Cluff, Chelsea Nell and Keely Hausken join Jaeger in the 4×100, and triple-jump placer Kira Lewis subs for Cluff on the 4×200. All but Lewis are underclassmen.

“I was a little worried about the 200 and being tired because I wanted to do better than sixth,“Jaeger said. “It was a great way to end the season.”

West Valley junior Kyle Mellander, who qualified for state in the 800 last year but didn’t make the final, did so this time and placed seventh in 1:57.77. He advanced out of the prelims in 1:56.34.

TRACK: Wells helps Crusaders to team title

May 31, 2009 by

CHENEY, Wash. — Dana Wells got top billing, but the supporting cast made the show go on for the Riverside Christian boys track team.

Wells grabbed the spotlight Saturday by winning the 110-meter hurdles, the 300 hurdles, placing second in the open 100 and anchoring the winning 4×100 team at the Class 2B state meet at Eastern Washington University’s Woodward Field.

But a solo act won’t win the team championship. That cast of characters included Kyle Gartrell, who added a long jump title to Friday’s triple jump gold; Derek Byrne, fourth in the long jump; Delwin Bazilme, fourth in the 400; and the 4×100 crew of Bazilme, Kent Gartrell, Scott Shively and Wells.

Their performances totaled 78 points, a state title and bravos all around from coach Scott Wells.

“That’s five (individual or relay) championships,” marveled Wells. “That’s a big meet if you can win five times.”

For a preview of the per-formance, take a look at the 4×100. The first three legs by Bazilme, Gartrell and Shively put the team in third and in perfect position for Wells to run down league rival La Salle and state rival Tacoma Baptist.

“Dana does it exactly as you script it,” said coach Wells. “They put him in a position to do his thing, and he did it.”

Dana’s thing sent the Crusaders across the finish line first in 44.11 seconds.

“We’ve raced all these guys before,” said Dana Wells. “We knew La Salle was our competition.”

He knew the competition well. The Lightning foursome of Branden Seymour, Jake DeGooyer, Joe Fischer and Kerry Duffy stepped into the state limelight with a second-place time of 44.48.

More important for RC’s team hopes, Tacoma Baptist placed fourth, giving the Crusaders a five-point edge in an eventual six-point victory.

Maurice McNeal helped Tacoma Baptist keep the pressure on RC as he won the 100, 200 and 400. It was in the 100 that Wells almost snared a third individual title with a late surge and a lean.

The electronic timer gave it to McNeal, 11.21 seconds to 11.25 for Wells into an occasionally gusty headwind.

That race came after Wells’ 110 hurdles victory, in which he led from the start and charged to a 15.16 time, easily beating second-place Mikhael Tran of Morton in 15.97.

Wells’ busy day and high school track career closed with a no-doubt win in the 300 hurdles. He clocked 39.48 in an encore performance that closed out his day and his high school careers.

Ending their careers similarly were three seniors on Lyle-Wishram’s 4×400 team. Anchor Cody Carlsen, a sophomore, ran down Mount Vernon Christian and Tacoma Baptist to win it in 3:28.61. Seniors Jim Price, Ty Freemantle and Robert Phelps ran the first three legs.

Carlsen also placed second in the 200 with a time of 22.97.

CLASS 1B: Tyler Cope of Trout Lake-Glenwood and Andrew Venema of Bickleton each suffered an odd reversal of misfortune.

The two entered the 110 hurdles with the two fastest qualifying times, separated by a tenth of a second. It shaped up as anybody’s race until Venema false-started and was disqualified. Cope went on to win in a meet record of 15.9 seconds despite a headwind.

“I’m glad I won, but it’s too bad he false-started,” said Cope.

Venena, meanwhile, was also in the middle of the high jump competition. “I channeled as much anger at myself as I could,” said Venema, and the result was a personal-best leap of 6 feet, 1 inch,  good for second place.

Then came the 300 hurdles, into which Cope and Venema again carried the top qualifying times. This time misfortune struck Cope, who tumbled over the second hurdle, hit the surface hard, and finished eighth. Venema cruised to victory in a meet-record 41.43 seconds.

Both helped their teams to hardware.

Bickleton took third with 62 team points — just five points out of first — as Jeromie Mason tripled-jumped 41 feet, 43?4 inches to win an individual championship along with Venema.

Cope was part of a winning 4×400 team with Mikael Dick, Alec England and Lucas King. Their time was 3:41.96.

Trout Lake-Glenwood wound up fourth with 57 points and the final team trophy.

CLASS 1A: Thrower Jake Wilcox of Naches Valley backed up Friday’s discus title with a second-place throw in the shot put Saturday.

Wilcox tossed the shot 51 feet, 2 inches, “about what I usually throw,” he said. He qualified for state with a 49-2, which seeded him fourth.

TRACK: TL-G girls run away with 1B crown

May 31, 2009 by

CHENEY, Wash. — All you need to know about the Class 1B girls meet, you could learn from the 4×400 relay.

Trout Lake-Glenwood’s Neola Putnam gapped the field with a 60-second leadoff leg. Anna Schmid’s leg, also around 60 seconds, erased all doubt about the eventual winner; Emily Paxson extended that lead; and Liz Vogt brought it home in 4 minutes, 12.01 seconds, a full straightaway ahead of the second-place team.

That’s a state meet record, one that this group — all seniors except for Vogt — hopes will be remembered for years to come.

“We wanted to get that meet record,” said Putnam. “We wanted a record that would stick,” emph-asized Paxson.

What will also stick is Trout Lake-Glenwood’s near-perfect run of first places in Saturday’s running events at Eastern Washington University. It went like this:

100, Schmid in 13.54; 200, Schmid in 27.45; 400, Vogt in 1:01.85; 800, Putnam in 2:21.75; 1600, Putnam in 5:26.73; 300 hurdles, Schmid in 48.30.

Add to that Paxson’s victory Friday in the 3,200, and Trout Lake-Glenwood won every running event except one. Paxson also was the runner-up in Saturday’s 1,600, just a second behind Putnam.

“We’ll probably never have a group like this again,” said coach Morgan Colburn. “They are the best distance and sprinters we’ve had. They are more than a pleasure to coach.”

It didn’t end there. McKenzie Koller pole-vaulted a personal-best 9 feet to win that competition, and Vogt placed second in the long jump with 15-51/2

All that totaled 125 points as Trout Lake-Glenwood ran away with the state title over North Sound Christian’s 77. Third came Klickitat with 67, thanks in large part to Samantha Brewer.

Brewer cracked the Trout Lake-Glenwood track domination with a first place in the 100 hurdles (17.08). This came as she was simultaneously winning the long jump in 15-103/4

“It puts a lot of stress to have to run over and do hurdles and then run over and jump,” said Brewer. She seems to do well under stress; Saturday’s titles added to her triple jump championship Friday.

Klickitat also gained key points from javelin throwers Zoe Linder and Kali Fargher, who placed third and fourth with respective marks of 105-9 and 103-9.

“They all stepped up,” said coach Jim Reed. “We’re pleased with that.”

CLASS 2B: Alicia Ashby of La Salle closed fast but had to settle for second place in the 200 meters. Her time was 26.46 seconds, just behind Jasmine Bingham of Wahkiakum in 26.38.

Ashby also anchored the third-place 4×100 team that included Julia Riel, Regine Standley, Jaryl Pence. All are either freshmen or juniors.

Riverside Christian triple jumpers Danielle Van Tuinen and Bethany Imperial placed third and fourth with the same mark: 33 feet, 11 inches. Van Tuinen was awared third.

CLASS 1A: Claire Boutillier of Naches Valley took third with a leap of 35 feet, 13/4 inches in the triple jump. Boutillier, a junior, was seventh last year.

SOCCER: Rams left behind in final

Shorecrest opens up 4-0 lead at half, deny WV fifth title ||

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — The streak finally ended.

The West Valley soccer team, which had won 14 straight matches to reassert itself as a state power, fell to Shorecrest 5-2 in the Class 3A state soccer championship Saturday at Harry Lang Stadium.

The Scots, who raced to 3-0 lead in the game’s first 21 minutes, denied the Rams (17-4) their fifth championship in their seventh trip to the state final and first since 1999.

“They came at us like I expected them to, but we didn’t respond,” said second-year West Valley coach Joe Sagare, who was part of the Rams’ success as a player and helped turn the team around after a 4-12 campaign last year.

Shorecrest had outscored opponents 13-1 in the first three rounds of the tournament and kept that momentum in the title match.

“This is the best feeling in the world,” Shorecrest coach Drew Thompson said. “It’s always the goal every year. That’s what we’re always dreaming of and it doesn’t come often, so we cherish these moments.”

Shorecrest (22-1), which last won a title in 2005, finished the season on a 19-game winning streak.

“We really stepped it up throughout the year and kept getting better and better,” said Scots co-captain Garrett Musar. “We improved the entire season and we’re the best now.”

The Scots took a 4-0 lead into halftime, all without leading scorer Glenn Paden.

Paden, a sophomore forward with 18 goals, was suspended for the final after accumulating two yellow cards in Friday’s quarterfinal win against top-ranked Mercer Island.

Shorecrest had plenty of other weapons.

Freshman Ian Adams, whose older brother Colin scored the game-winner in the Scots’ 2005 championship victory, opened the scoring for Shorecrest in the sixth minute. Jonathan Cho, Novack and Eli Blauser added goals before the break.

The Rams got on the board when Connor Nathe scored an unassisted goal in the 54th minute. Salvador Pulido netted the Rams’ second goal in the final minutes on a penalty kick.

SOCCER: Prosser rallies for third

May 31, 2009 by

SUMNER, Wash. — Trailing at halftime for the second consecutive day, Prosser’s boys soccer team wasn’t going let Saturday’s game end the same way as Friday’s semifinal loss.

Victor Corona and Mario Cervantez scored second-half goals to lead the Mustangs (18-4) to a 2-1 victory over Archbishop Murphy in the Class 2A state third-place game Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Archbishop Murphy scored just before the half to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

Corona’s goal came at the 53-minute mark and helped turn the tide.

“It was a big goal for us,” coach Rich Zoller said. “We had let Cheney score just before halftime (on Friday) and we were a little demoralized at halftime (on Saturday). ”

Corona took a pass from Mynor Maza who had beaten his defender on the right side and sent it home from five yards out.

In the 74th minute, Cervantez took the ball up the left side of the field, passed it to Anthony Cervantez as part of a give-and-go, got it back and beat the goalie one on one.

First half: 1, Archbishop Murphy, 39:00
Second half: 2, Prosser, Victor Corona (Mynor Maza), 53:00; 3, Prosser, Mario Cervantez (Anthony Cervantez) 74:00.

FASTPITCH: Bulldogs let down by defense

May 31, 2009 by

SELAH, Wash. — Fastpitch, like baseball, is pretty simple. Like the saying goes, you hit the ball, throw the ball, you catch the ball.

But at the championship level, unlike the way the song goes, two out of three is bad. And one out of three, well, that’s worse.

Ellensburg’s dream fastpitch season ended where the Bulldogs wanted it to be, in the Class 2A title game, but not the way they would have chosen the ending. They ran into a better hitting team in Burlington-Edison and, in a rare defensive lapse, committed four errors that led to five unearned runs in the Tigers’ 5-1 triumph at Carlon Park.

“They hit the ball well. That’s huge,” said Bulldog senior Sarah McNamee, who had driven in both runs and struck out 16 batters over nine innings in Ellensburg’s 2-0 semifinal victory over Woodland. “That’s what wins games — they’ve got good pitching and they’re a solid hitting team. That’s going to win every time.”

The Tigers racked up 33 hits over their four-day tourney run, while Ellensburg managed but 18.

And while Tiger junior pitcher Lindsey Dawson was limiting the Bulldogs to just two hits, the Tigers (22-6) managed seven hits off Bulldog starter Jessica Harris over 42/3 innings, capped by Dawson’s three-run home run.

“I just knew what it took to be here, because we’ve been here before, and I knew what needed to get done,” said Dawson, who entered the game with five homers this season. “I don’t think it was a mistake pitch. It was just on the inside part of the plate, and that was the pitch I was looking for.”

That blast capped a four-run uprising ignited by a two-out Bulldog throwing error. Two first-inning errors — singles turned into two-base plays by outfield miscues — led to Burlington-Edison’s initial run.

“In a championship game, that’s what happens: Make an error and the other team’s going to take control of that,” said Ellensburg coach Dave Kopczynski, whose team finished 24-2. “They lost 3-1 to Othello last year (in the 2008 championship game) and all they lost was their second baseman. Those are good ballplayers. We haven’t seen anybody hit our pitchers like that this year. My hat’s off to them.”

In the semifinal, all hats should have been doffed to McNamee, who matched Woodland hurler Emily Holt strikeout-for-strikeout, as Holt finished with 17. In the ninth inning the game went to international tiebreaker rules, with each team starting the inning with a runner at second base. Ellie Layman popped a bunt single, then stole second to put runners on second and third for McNamee, who lofted a short fly to left field. The left fielder dived for the ball but couldn’t come up with it, and both runners came in. McNamee then put the Beavers down in order in the bottom of the inning, striking out two.

McNamee finished the day with 21 strikeouts in 101/3 innings. She notched the rare four-in-one-inning feat in closing out the title game, with one runner reaching first when the third strike got by the catcher.

“Second place at state,” Kopczynski said with a smile. “Not bad. Especially after going two-and-out last year. Not bad at all.”

THIRD-PLACE GAME: Woodland came back to capture third place as Holt turned in another stellar performance for the Beavers, pitching a four-hitter, striking out nine and walking just one in a 5-0 victory over Tumwater.

Over the four days, Holt pitched three shutouts and had a fourth through eight innings in the semifinal, striking out 55 over 28 innings and allowing only the two runs in the tiebreaker format. She also hit two quite prodigious home runs. And she’s only a sophomore.
