FASTPITCH: E’burg carries day for CWAC

May 30, 2009 by

SELAH, Wash. — The untouchable ace got knocked around just enough to get her riled up. Then when the bats went silent, the No. 2 pitcher became untouchable. And the Ellensburg Bulldogs generally did so much worth celebrating that their coach actually hurt himself doing just that.

That was the opening day of the Class 2A state fastpitch tournament in a nutshell for Ellensburg, which became the CWAC’s lone remaining entry when both Selah and East Valley went two-and-out.

But the Bulldogs carried the league’s banner well, rallying from two runs down in the bottom of the seventh against Centralia to win 5-4 in eight innings, then riding Jessica Harris’ one-hitter to a 2-0 triumph over North Mason.

“It’s a testament to these kids,” Ellensburg coach Dave Kopczynski said. “In the first game, it was the bottom half of the order, then in the next one it’s the top. I can’t say enough about these kids.”

In today’s games, he’ll have to say it without jumping around. When Ellie Layman’s eighth-inning single to left scored Josie Savage with the winning run against Centralia, Kopczynski jumped up in exhilaration and landed wrong, feeling something pop. Tournament trainers told him it might be a partial tear of the left Achilles tendon.

“That’s OK. I’m not going anywhere,” Kopczynski said, hobbling with his calf and ankle well-taped. “I’ll celebrate on one leg if I have to.”

To celebrate today, though, the Bulldogs (23-1) must get past their 10 a.m. semifinal against Woodland (18-6), which had the opening day’s most impressive player in sophomore pitcher Emily Holt. She struck out 13, pitched a one-hitter and slammed a monster home run in a 10-0 pounding of Blaine, then hit another homer and struck out 16 in a two-hitter in the Beavers’ 3-0 quarterfinal victory over Colville.

Burlington-Edison rode Lindsey Dawson’s steady pitching to a pair of shutouts en route to the semifinals, 5-0 over Chehalis and 1-0 over Pullman. The Tigers (20-6) will face upstart Tumwater (16-7), who edged once-beaten Steilacoom 3-2 as Samantha Stahle drove in all three runs on a homer and a double, then nipped Granite Falls 1-0 behind Kierstin Smith’s 11-strikeout three-hitter.

East Valley finished 15-11 in a pair of low-scoring losses 4-2 to Granite Falls and 5-1 to Steilacoom. In the first game, the Red Devils simply couldn’t deal with Granite Falls hurler Alyssa Arndt, who struck out 16, and then they committed six errors against Steilacoom.

Selah (18-6) had similar woes in its two games, committing five errors in a 9-2 loss to Pullman and then four in their 7-6 loss to Chehalis, with errors paving the way for the Bearcats’ final two runs, including the game-winner. That offset the Vikings’ 10-hit attack, including a seven-hit, four-run fourth inning that included six consecutive singles.

“We didn’t executive,” Vikings coach Bill Harris said. “We played two teams today that we were evenly matched with and we did not execute. It’s disappointing, because we knew we were a good enough team to get here. Then we got here and didn’t execute.”

Ellensburg, though, did. After Centralia pitcher Ramona Lofton slugged a two-run homer in the top of the seventh for a 4-2 lead off Bulldog ace Sarah McNamee, who hadn’t given up an earned run all season, McNamee answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double down the line.

“I was like, OK, you hit one off me, now it’s my turn,” McNamee said. “It wasn’t exactly a home run, but it did the job.”

So, too, did Harris in the Bulldogs’ second game. She pitched no-hit ball through six and then, after North Mason’s Cristy Norcross slammed a double in the seventh, Harris saved a run by snaring an Abbey Marshall line drive just over her forehead.

“There’s not really any thought that goes through your mind,” she said with a grin. “It’s like, ‘Oh, protect your face.’”

And, in this case, the Bulldogs’ championship hopes.

FASTPITCH: Adna deals Kittitas first loss

May 30, 2009 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Perfection ended perfection.

Kittitas brought a 23-0 record into Friday night’s Class 2B quarterfinal against Adna, but the Coyotes had no chance to add on against the Pirates’ Jessika-Jo Sandrini.

The only thing slowing up the junior pitcher was an hour-long rain delay before she could take the mound for the bottom of the first inning.

Sandrini allowed just four balls to be put in play, one resulting in an error, as she threw a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts in Adna’s 8-0 victory at Gateway Sports Complex.

“Have I seen anything like her? No. She was on,” Kittitas coach Nate Phillips said. “I felt pretty good about our effort, but we didn’t accomplish much at the plate.”

It was a similar story for Thorp-Easton, who had their titles dreams ended against defending Class 1B champion Touchet and pitcher Stephanie Samuels.

Samuels wasn’t nearly as dominant as Sandrini, but the sophomore was highly effective, scattering four hits and striking out 10 in a 5-0 victory over the Wildcats.

“They hit and we didn’t,” Thorp-Easton coach Logan Mohr said, referring to the Tigers’ nine-hit attack. “We played about the best we have all year. We just didn’t adjust to their pitching.”

Despite the loss, Thorp-Easton (12-6), which opened with a 7-3 victory over Taholah, stayed alive and will face Inchelum today at 2 p.m. with the winner playing for third and fourth place.

“We got that first win,” Mohr said, “so we’re ahead of what everybody predicted.”

La Salle also stayed alive in the 2B bracket, bouncing back nicely from an opening round defeat to eliminate defending champion Toutle Lake, 8-5.

“For La Salle, any win at state is a plus, especially against a team from District 4,” coach Sara Adams said, referring to the district that has produced six of the seven Class B fastpitch champions. “Now they know they can win; they know they can compete with anyone.”

The Lightning (15-6) will face Colfax this morning at 10 a.m. in a loser-out game.

Kittitas is also in a loser-out game, at 10 a.m. against Davenport, and the Coyotes can only hope they regain their hitting stroke after Sandrini’s gem Friday evening.

Sandrini, who was the tough-luck loser in last year’s 2-1 loss to Toutle Lake in the championship game, got two ground ball outs to end the first inning and then struck out the next seven Kittitas hitters before Sareena Calahan reached on an error by the second baseman with one out in the fourth.

That didn’t rattle Sandrini, who struck out 10 straight hitters before getting Kayvonne Vaver to fly out to center to end the game.

Sandrini helped her own cause by doubling and scoring in the first to get Adna an early 1-0 advantage. She finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The game was actually closer than the final score, with Kittitas trailing just 3-0 before some defensive breakdowns led to five unearned runs in the top of the seventh.

“Outside of that last inning, I thought we played pretty well defensively,” Phillips said. “And I thought Maup (pitcher Dallas Maupin) threw well.

“I think we’ll bounce back today.”

Kittitas opened play with a thrilling 7-6 victory in nine innings over Selkirk, as the Coyotes scored twice in the bottom of the ninth.

La Salle didn’t start nearly as well as it finished, losing 12-0 to Seattle Lutheran. But the Lightning woke up against Toutle Lake, with Tori Gonzalez throwing a complete game and going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Amy Holbrook added two hits and three RBI, Ally Hernandez had two hits, two runs and an RBI, and Lauren DeGooyer had two hits and two runs.

FASTPITCH: Cle Elum, Zillah fall just short

May 30, 2009 by

PASCO, Wash. — Cle Elum pushed SCAC district champion Connell to the limit Friday before falling 3-2 in the consolation bracket of the Class 1A fastpitch state tournament at the TRAC Softball Complex.

The Eagles, who were unbeaten before losing 4-1 to Cascade (Leavenworth) in the first round, trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth.

Connell scored a run in the sixth and added the game-winner in the seventh to end the Warriors season at 14-9.

Cle Elum began the day with a 1-0 victory over Chelan. Ashley Sutton singled in Haley Bator in the bottom of the third with game’s only run. Bator did the rest, tossing a one-hitter.

The Warriors then fell to powerful Montesano 15-0 in the quarterfinals.

Zillah also saw its season end, but not without posting a victory.

The Leopards fell 5-3 to Nooksack Valley in the First round before blanking Cashmere 9-0 behind sophomore Kelsie Salverda’s three-hitter.

SCAC West player of the year Korie Duce had two hits and drove in a pair of runs and Samantha Robillard and Jennifer Nelson added a pair of hits for Leopards.

Zillah fell to Toledo 2-1 in nine innings and ended its season at 15-12.

“I’m very proud of this group,” Leopards coach Daniel Robillard said. “I never thought we’d get this far from beginning of season.”

TENNIS: La Salle’s Gibbons dominates

May 30, 2009 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — La Salle’s Seth Gibbons didn’t have the most pinpoint shot of Friday’s quarterfinal against Tonasket’s Tyler Hendrick.

That belonged to Hendrick, who returned one of Gibbons’ serve off a stray ball still on the La Salle junior’s side of the court for a point.

“It was a once in a lifetime shot,” Gibbons said. “Maybe (I’ve seen it) in practice, but not a match.”

La Salle's Seth Gibbons plays Charles Wright's Daniel Ham during a first-round match in the state tennis tournament on Friday, May 29, 2009. (Sara Gettys/Yakima Herald-Republic)

And definitely not in this match, a 6-1, 6-1 dominating performance by Gibbons, who advanced to the semifinals of the Class 1A-2B-1B state tournament at the Yakima Tennis Center after making it to the quarterfinals the past two seasons, eventually finishing fourth last year.

Gibbons controlled the match from the baseline and sprinkled in some timely net play. After Hendrick broke Gibbons’ serve to start the second set, the Lightning standout broke the Tonasket sophomore and gave up just eight points the rest of the way.

Gibbons faces Bear Creek freshman Jake Imam at 10 this morning with a berth in the title match at stake. Imam has dominated thus far, losing just one game in the first two rounds.

“This year I have high hopes,” Gibbons said. “As long as I play well (today), I’ll be happy.”

The draw left Gibbons with a stout first-round opponent in Charles Wright freshman Daniel Ham. But Gibbons prevailed 6-4, 6-4.

Naches Valley sisters Zori and Larisa Fossum, state qualifiers in singles a year ago, cruised to straight set victories in their two Friday matches.

The Ranger duo topped Freeman’s Blair Riddle and Katie Bauer 6-1, 6-3 in an opening match and followed with a 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinal victory over Omak’s Rachel Martinez and Danielle Pecha.

The Fossums will face Sarah Sarika Halankdar and Megan Kelly at 8:30 this morning in a semifinal match.

Goldendale’s Kylee Bellamy and Ryell Carley remain alive in the consolation victory.

TENNIS: Bertelsen, Teske head to semis

May 30, 2009 by

SEATTLE — The Selah doubles team of Kevin Bertelsen and Devin Teske posted a pair of straight-set victories to advance to the Class 2A semifinals at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington Campus.

It’s a return trip to the semifinals for Teske, who placed second with partner Cody Alliston, who graduated last spring. Bertelsen was a state qualifiers in singles last year.

The Vikings are the lone Yakima Valley entry in either boys or girls still with a shot of a championship. But there are plenty still alive in the consolation brackets:

• Ellensburg’s Josiah Jackson and Aaron Porter, third-place finishers in doubles a year ago, will meet in the consolation semifinals with the winner earning a shot at fourth place. The two have split a pair of matches this year, with Jackson winning last weekend in the district championship.

• Grandview’s Rogi Fajardo is in the consolation semifinal opposite the matchup of the Bulldogs teammates. Fajardo, a senior, advanced to the consolation quarterfinals a year ago.

• The Ellensburg boys doubles team of Mike Komorowski and Bryan Elliott also stayed in contention for a medal. The tandem won twice after falling in the first round and is in the consolation semis.

• CWAC district champion Abigail Pellett bounced back after a quarterfinal loss and advance to the consolation semifinals.
