PDL: Reds earn first victory

May 24, 2009 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Striking quickly and then turning in a strong second half, the Yakima Reds finally broke into the win column Saturday, posting a 2-0 victory over the Spokane Shadow at Marquette Stadium.

Yakima earned its first victory after dropping its first four matches.

Newly signed Vini Oliveira, the winner of the Seattle Sounders player search contest, scored his first goal with the Reds, an unassisted tally in the sixth minute.

Oliveira, who was recently released by Seattle, had joined the Reds prior to last week’s two games in Oregon.

Yakima’s defense made that goal stand up until the 70th minute when the Reds added some insurance when Andrew O’Brien scored off an assist from Jose Santana.

Yakima controlled play, outshooting Spokane 6-3.

The Reds are now off until June 5 when they travel to Spokane.

First half: 1, Yakima, Vini Oliveira, 6:00.

Second half: 2, Yakima, Andrew O’Brien (Jose Santana), 70:00.

Shots: Spokane 3, Yakima 6. Saves: Spokane 4 (Josh Peck), Yakima 2 (Robert McCurdy, Mauricio Sanchez, 45:00). Fouls: Spokane 8, Yakima 6. Corner kicks: Spokane 1, Yakima 4.
