Bears glad to leave Everett

EVERETT — For the frustrated and flummoxed Yakima Bears, the best view they had of Memorial Stadium over the last week was in the rear-view mirror Wednesday night.

Unable to piece together an offense until there were two outs in the ninth inning, the Bears fell 4-2 as the Everett AquaSox closed out a five-game sweep while sending Yakima to its 10th loss in 12 games.

Held scoreless with just five hits through 81/3 innings, the Bears made it interesting with four consecutive singles — a rally that started with two outs and nobody on — but Matt Davidson struck out swinging with the bases loaded to end the comeback.

Brent Greer capped the late procession of hits to drive in Yakima’s first run, and then Tyrell Worthington, who was 3-for-3, scored the second run on a wild pitch. The Bears stranded 11 in the game.

Yakima had an opportunity to jump on Everett starter Chris Kirkland early when Greer tripled with one out in the first and Ryan Wheeler was then hit by a pitch. But Kirkland pitched his way out of the jam by striking out Davidson and Jorge Corniel.

Despite the rough stay in Everett, Greer was stellar at the plate, batting .409 with a double, triple, five home runs and eight RBI.

Everett got to Yakima starter Chris Odegaard in the second inning when Jose Rivero drove in two runs with a two-out double.

The AquaSox, winners of seven straight, lead the NWL in homers, and in the seventh Anthony Phillips boosted the team tally to 18 with a one-out solo shot for a 4-0 lead.

The Bears (7-12), who outhit Everett 9-6, return to Yakima County Stadium tonight to start a five-game homestand against Salem-Keizer, which owns the league’s best record at 14-5.
