YAKIMA — Speed at the front and depth in the middle was a potent combination for Eisenhower’s girls cross country team on Tuesday.

With three runners among the top six overall, the Cadets went 6-0 — including a big win over rival Richland — as half of the CBBN met for the conference’s first round of dual meets on West Valley’s 5,000-meter course.
West Valley senior Audrey Urlacher was an impressive winner on her home course, clocking 20 minutes, 10 seconds on the grass layout that winds through the grounds at West Valley Junior High.
Junior Berenice Penaloza and sophomore Mayra Chavez paced the Cadets with a 3-4 finish and junior Katherine Bravo was close on their heels in sixth.
That gave Eisenhower, ranked seventh in this week’s state 4A coaches poll, enough power to win all six of its dual meets, including a 25-31 victory over No. 4 Richland.

Yakima runners dominated the girls race by sweeping the first six places with, in order, Urlacher, Davis’ Kaitlin Kaluzny (20:31), Penaloza (20:35); Chavez (20:41); West Valley’s Margret Parobek (20:54) and Bravo (20:58).
Davis was 3-3 in its girls duals and West Valley was 2-4.
In the boys race, third-ranked Kamiakin proved worthy of that ranking with a 6-0 record in duals and a sweep of the top three individual places.
Kamiakin sophomore Anthony Armstrong was the overall winner, timing 16:48.
Ike’s Timothy Cummings and German Silva finished 4-6, helping the Cadets finish 4-2 for the day.
Davis was 2-4 with a 10th-place finish from Alberto Melchor, and West Valley was 1-5.
