Eisenhower 20, Richland 0 FINAL
RICHLAND, Wash. — A week after staying on the ground to ring up a victory, Eisenhower took to the air for a crucial road victory Friday.

James Lopez threw for 192 yards, including a pair of scoring tosses to Asya Morioka, to back a stellar effort by the Cadets’ defense as Ike earned a 20-0 victory over Richland in a CBBN game at Fran Rish Stadium.

The unbeaten Cadets improved to 3-0 in the Cascade Division, and 4-0 overall.

Joe Fuerst, who ran for 227 yards in last Friday’s victory over Chiawana, was limited to 60 yards on 16 carries by Richland, but he did find the end zone, scoring on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter for the only points in the second half.

That score was really unnecessary as the Cadet defense limited the Bombers to just 60 passing yards and 76 yards on the ground.

Jake McKinney ran for 70 yards for Richland, but quarterback Hayden Hilty completed just 7 of 14 passes.

Zillah 34, Royal 31 FINAL
ROYAL CITY, Wash. — After spotting perennial SCAC and Class 1A state power Royal a 9-0 lead, the Zillah Leopards roared back to stun the third-ranked Knights 34-31 behind a spirited defensive effort.

Zillah held the Knights’ typically potent rushing attack to just 120 yards and, fittingly, the Leopards began their comeback from a 23-12 second-quarter lead with a defensive touchdown. Rodney Treece returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown that, with the two-point conversion pulled Zillah (3-1) to within 28-20.

Joe Burns’ 26-yard touchdown pass to Kane Koerner early in the fourth quarter put Zillah ahead, and a one-yard touchdown plunge by Chris Castillo gave the Leopards enough breathing room to withstand a late Royal touchdown.

Cameron Bounds had a 49-yard touchdown run and Ricky Cuellar caught a touchdown pass and a two-point conversion from Burns.

Wapato freestyle relay team among state’s best in 2A ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — Bethany Imperial, Tiffany Owens, Ariel Valdez and Kirsten Cleveringa are swimming teammates who must have some kind of identity crisis. Sort through their varied circumstances and a simple question gets more complex with each step.

Question is, who are they?

In the summer, Imperial, Valdez and Cleveringa compete for the Toppenish Tarpons youth club while Owens swims for the Grandview Neptunes.

During the school year, Imperial and Cleveringa attend Riverside Christian.

This fall during the high school swim season, they all train with Davis swimmers at Lions Pool and travel with the Pirates to meets.

But on those race days they come together as one, sporting the blue and yellow uniform of Wapato to become one of the best Class 2A 200-yard freestyle teams in the state.

“It is a little weird,” Cleveringa concedes. “But we have a really good bond. We’re very close. We love swimming and competing together however it works.”

Without a swim program at Riverside Christian, Imperial and Cleveringa are allowed to represent their resident town of Wapato, which co-ops its high school program with Davis under coach Carl Scott. In the summer, with the closure of Wapato’s city pool due to a budget shortfall, three of them joined up with Toppenish and helped the Tarpons win the AAU Mid Valley League title.

It’s a jumbled map to follow, but once together in the fall these girls click.

A year after the same group made the 2A state final in the 200 free relay and placed eighth, they opened last week with a 1:51.85, not far off the automatic state-qualifying time of 1:50.49. In that same meet, Imperial swam a career-best and Valley-leading 26.12 in the 50 free.

“We were a second off the qualifying time, and even though it was our first meet we really wanted to hit that time,” said Imperial, a sophomore. “We’re all getting faster and we have our goals, like top four or five at state.”

A versatile athlete who medaled in two events at the 2B state track meet for Riverside Christian last spring, Imperial swam leadoff for the Wolves’ sprint relay last year and they’re sticking with the sequence. Even if she’s not completely sold on her value as a starter.

“I think my start is, well, not slow,” said Imperial, a bit of a self critic. “I try to be as consistent with it as I can be, but it needs to get better. For our relay, though, this lineup works for us.”

When Imperial touches, Owens takes over. The junior loves the sprint but would like to expand into other relays.

“We have eight girls out and I’m glad we have a bigger team,” she said. “We’ve talked about trying to get all three relays to state — that would be amazing. But the main thing is the 200.”

The second half of the relay is for the seniors, first Valdez and then Cleveinga. Two years ago, Valdez led off and Cleveringa anchored a 200 medley relay that qualified for state.

For Valdez, being third is ideal.

“I like knowing who I have to catch, and I like to work hard to set up Kirsten,” she said. “Ever since last year we’ve talked about placing higher than eighth. We’re absolutely going for it.”

Cleveringa has always been Wapato’s anchor and it’s easy to see why. She thrives on it.

“I want to be a good leader for us, and I like the competition when it’s tight,” she said. “When I watch them going as hard as they can, I can’t wait for my turn to jump in.”

With everybody back and goals in clearer focus, all four girls are excited for what this season may bring.

“Last year we didn’t know how good we could be,” Cleveringa said. “But as the season went along we found out we were pretty decent. Now we’ve got a better idea what we’re shooting for, and it’s fun coming together and sharing big goals together.”

That’s who they are.
