Zillah runs away from NV in conference showdown ||
NACHES, Wash. — Six touchdowns, six different players.
Eleven running backs, 433 yards.
Add in a pass to be honest, and it found the end zone.
Zillah’s streaking fifth-ranked football team simply has too many weapons to account for these days and that was in full evidence Friday night with the SCAC West title on the line.

Zillah High School's Rodney Treece outruns the Naches High School defense to score on a 70-yard run in the first quarter to give Zillah a 6-0 lead in their Oct. 30, 2009 game.
Averaging nearly nine yards a run, the Leopards capped a second consecutive unbeaten run through the West with a 41-7 victory over Naches Valley.
|
“We have athletes at every position and we have depth,” said a beaming Kane Koerner, Zillah’s senior standout at defensive end and tight end. “It keeps our legs fresh and helps us keep coming at people. Everybody made this happen tonight.”
Rodney Treece bolted 82 yards for a score on Zillah’s third play of the game and finished with 121 yards, and Chris Castillo contributed 89 yards with a touchdown on the Leopards’ third play of the second half.
“We spread it around — that’s our strength,” Castillo said. “We lost our first game (an overtime non-league contest at Toppenish) and that made us hungry to improve. Ever since we’ve been getting better and better and I think maybe tonight was our best game so far.”
After a quick ice-water soaking from his players, Zillah coach Rock Winters gathered his Leopards together and simply pointed at the scoreboard.
“To win a league championship by that score says a lot about how far we’ve come,” Winters said to his team. “That’s what hard work can do.”
What Zillah accomplished offensively was nearly matched by the defense, which shut Naches Valley out for three quarters and forced three turnovers in the second half.
The Rangers had two solid drives in the first half — 11 plays for 70 yards in the first quarter and 12 plays for 57 yards in the second period — but both stalled on downs in Zillah’s red zone.
NV quarterback Billy Craig completed nine passes for 151 yards, and West-leading running back Nic Lukehart gained 85 yards on 27 carries.
“Their quarterback has been doing well lately and we wanted to make him feel not so comfortable back there,” Koerner said. “And we needed to contain Lukehart. That’s what we went after and I think we did pretty well.”
Koerner was involved in a crucial swing of events at the end of the first half.
Down 14-0, the Rangers’ second impressive drive advanced to Zillah’s 17 and cutting the margin in half appeared imminent. But the Leopards’ defense — which hasn’t allowed a first-half offensive score in West play this season — turned the ball over on downs, giving Zillah’s fastbreak offensive another shot with just over a minute left.
After Castillo sped for 14 yards, quarterback Joe Burns used play-action for a rare pass attempt and connected with Koerner, his tight end, for a 64-yard touchdown that stretched the lead to 21-0 heading into the locker room.
It’s an effective play. Koerner has four receptions for the season and three have gone for touchdowns.
“I do a ton of blocking so it’s nice to catch a ball once in a while,” he said with a smile. “It was the perfect time for it.”
In next week’s SCAC crossover playoffs, Zillah (6-0, 8-1) will host East No. 4 Wahluke and Naches Valley (5-1, 6-3) will host East No. 3 River View.

Cadets keep on rolling

Fuerst sets records; eighth-ranked Ike improves to 9-0 ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Had Dan Eyman suggested last summer that his Eisenhower football team would go 9-0, he would have been roundly proclaimed to have been all wet.
And there he was Friday night in Zaepfel Stadium, all wet, while his Cadets celebrated their first 9-0 season since 1992 after a 37-15 defeat of Pasco.
Ike’s victory in its CBBN crossover means it will meet Walla Walla in a regional playoff next Friday night, also at Zaepfel.
It also meant a postgame water-bucket dousing of Eyman, who would never have hinted at an unbeaten regular season even if he’d thought it.
“Obviously,” he said, “these kids have exceeded everyone’s expectations. And it’s funny — we always say to act like we’ve been there, but then we giggle and remind ourselves that we haven’t. But this is great.”
So were a host of Cadets, including program pillars Ryan Watson and Seth Kline, who led a swarming defense that held the Bulldogs (2-6) to 64 first-half yards and kept them off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter with Ike leading 37-0.
And then there was record-breaking Joe Fuerst, whose 215 yards on 19 carries broke Matt Plaster’s school-record of 1,210 set 10 years ago. Fuerst now has 1,418. And his 8-yard touchdown run eclipsed the Ike mark of 17 established by Steve Dale in 1964.
“When we got Joe and Dylan (Hudson) in here, with all the other seniors we have here, I knew we’d be a good team,” said Kline. “This is something I’ve dreamed of ever since I stepped into this high school. It’s just … it’s an overwhelming feeling.”
Much like Pasco might have felt from the opening kickoff, which Ike’s Daniel Ortega returned 66 yards for a touchdown.
James Lopez followed with a 3-yard touchdown run, then threw scoring strikes of 19 yards to Hudson and 39 yards to Antonio Martinez.
Andre Arcand kicked a 35-yard field goal that put the Cadets up 30-0 at halftime, after which Fuerst’s TD capped the scoring.
“I started thinking (about going unbeaten) after we won at Walla Walla (37-7 on Sept. 11),” said Watson, who had an interception and, from his tight end position, caught two passes for 15 yards. “We were all disappointed last year, when we went 5-5 and didn’t even get to the playoffs. This year we wanted to go out and make a statement.”
And, in the process, make their coach all wet.
Shutout, win slip Selah’s grasp

Othello touchdown in the final minutes drops Viks to third ||
SELAH, Wash. — Devon Lind has returned punts for touchdowns so often over the past couple of years that the Othello senior isn’t even sure how many it’s been.
“Last year around six, this year maybe three, so … nine-ish?” Lind said after scoring the winning touchdown with 2:25 remaining in Othello’s 7-3 CWAC victory over Selah.
The Huskies’ victory relegated the Vikings to third place — and a road trip in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs, probably to West Valley of Spokane — while setting up Othello (8-0 CWAC, 8-1 overall) for its home game next week against Ellensburg for the league title.

Lind’s heroics didn’t come on his specialty. In fact, it was Lind’s muff of a second-quarter punt return — recovered by Selah’s Klayton Fleming — that set the Vikings (6-2, 7-2) up for Daniel Hernandez’s 28-yard field goal and a 3-0 Selah lead that lasted until the hectic final few minutes.
“I was wearing some different cleats at the beginning of the game — moldy cleats. I slipped and lost my balance,” Lind said of the muffed punt. “You just gotta keep your head up. I told the team at halftime, I’ll make it up. I said it’s my fault we’re behind, but I’m gonna make a play and we’re gonna get it back.”
As it turned out, that play came on a 33-yard scoring pass from Jeremy Cerillo on a fourth-and-12 play, but the turning point came 11?2 minutes earlier. With Selah needing only to run out the clock to protect its 3-0 lead, a holding penalty forced the Vikings into a third-and-long situation, and Trent Douglass’ pass was picked off by Mando Deleon. That gave Othello new life at the Selah 38-yard-line with just under four minutes remaining.
Selah had had a sensational defensive performance to that point, led by Jake Lunceford (16 tackles and a blocked field goal), Travis Luke (16 tackles and a fumble recovery) and Chris Lyon (13 tackles). But on fourth-and-12, Lind turned a short pass — “It was an option, a curl or an in, and I took the in,” he said — and caught the ball for a 13-yard gain, then used his speed and elusiveness to weave across the field through seemingly the entire Selah defense for the score.
“I knew we had the first down,” Cerillo said, “and Devon just did his thing.”
And broke the Vikings’ hearts.
“They played their butts off. They played hard, and I’m proud of them,” Selah coach Jeff Jamieson said. “To play that hard for that long and come up short … that’s unfortunate. They’re pretty bummed right now, because that’s a tough way to lose it.”
