Sterkel sets record in rout
October 31, 2009 by YH-R Sports
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Ethan Sterkel had already posted some prolific numbers during his Ellensburg career, but the senior quarterback saved his best for his regular-season home farewell Friday night.
Sterkel eclipsed the Valley record by passing for 497 yards, and also had five touchdown passes in leading the top-ranked Bulldogs to a 54-8 victory over Toppenish at Andreotti Stadium.
Sterkel’s yardage total was two yards better than the 495-yard effort of former Ellens-burg quart-erback Randle Affholter, son of coach Randy Affholter, in a 2006 game.
Sterkel completed 25 of 33 passes, with all of his scoring passes traveling at least 24 yards, and four of them going for 34 or more.
Four of the scoring passes came in a 34-point second quarter after the teams battled through a scoreless first period.
Kramer Ferrell and Sungyoung Lee had two TD catches each, with Mike McKinney adding a 3-yard scoring run in the big second quarter.
Ferrell was the main recipient of Sterkel’s effort, catching nine balls for 212 yards.
Sterkel now has 2,851 yards and 29 touchdown passes this season.

| RICHLAND, Wash. — David Trimble had what Davis coach Rick Clark called “a Charles Woodson-esque type night,” and the reference to Michigan’s 1997 Heisman Trophy winner didn’t sound all that outrageous considering Trimble’s heroics during the Pirates 50-17 victory. In helping Davis to its highest single-game scoring output since 1964, Trimble had two interceptions, one of which he picked off with one hand while tiptoeing along the sideline to stay inbounds and then returned 50 yards for a touchdown. He also caught a touchdown pass and had a two-point conversion reception.
Trimble’s interception was one of three long defensive touchdowns for the Pirates, who also got 50-plus-yard fumble runbacks for scores by Jose Martinez and Sebastian Hunt. The Pirates (2-7) will host Chiawana on Thursday at Zaepfel Stadium. |

Penaloza, also a district champ, covered the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 54 seconds Friday, 24 seconds behind winner Baylee Mires of Mead. Chavez was right behind in 18:55 for the sixth-ranked Cadets.
Davis’ Kaitlin Kaluzny finished 13th to also qualify for state.
In the 3A meet, Urlacher finished fifth in 19:00, Parobek was sixth in 19:39, and Noe seventh in 19:41.
No local boys qualified for 3A state.
In the 2B-1B boys district meet at Plantes Ferry in Spokane, Junior Hernandez finished fourth and Taylor Brown was 20th to help Bickleton finish fifth and qualify for state. Also advancing to state were Riverside Christian’s Justin Odman and Dusty Bender, who were 25th and 26th, respectively.
Riverside Christian, behind April Soelberg (7th overall) and Taylor Wilkinson (13th), finished third to qualify for state. Bickleton’s Christina Wilson was ninth to also advance to state.

F1: Kovalainen Fastest in Abu Dhabi Practice
October 31, 2009 by The Associated Press
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — McLaren driver Heikki Kovalainen has set the fastest time in Friday’s practice sessions for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Kovalainen, who is expected to leave McLaren after Sunday’s race, set a time of 1 minute, 41.307 seconds around the new Yas Marina circuit, edging teammate Lewis Hamilton by two-tenths of a second.
Brawn GP world champion Jenson Button was third fastest, ahead of Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel, who is second in the championship standings.
Toyota driver Kamui Kobayashi, preparing for only his second career race, was fifth best, in front of Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi, Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello.
F1: Williams to Announce Lineup on Monday
October 31, 2009 by The Associated Press
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Williams will announce its 2010 Formula One driver lineup Monday, increasing the expectation that Rubens Barrichello will be lured from Brawn GP.
Team principal Frank Williams confirmed the near-term announcement hours after Barrichello spoke about the opportunity to join Williams, while stopping short of confirming his move.
“We will announce our drivers for next season on Monday,” Williams said.
Barrichello was widely expected to be joined at Williams by 22-year-old Nico Hulkenberg, a German who currently drives in GP2.
Barrichello’s likely departure means Brawn GP’s concentration will be on re-signing world champion Jenson Button. Team principal Ross Brawn said Friday that he was confident a deal will be done but warned it will be weeks rather than days before an agreement was reached.
“We agreed that nothing would happen for a few weeks after the championship, so the next few weeks are going to be pretty busy,” Brawn said. “I am confident, I want to keep Jenson in the team.”
Nico Rosberg confirmed Thursday that this weekend’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be his last with Williams, and he was thought to be destined for one of the Mercedes-powered teams next year, either McLaren or Brawn.
“Nico is German and Mercedes needs at least one German driver to sit before their engine,” Williams said.
The Williams team also confirmed it will use Cosworth engines next season, replacing Toyota power. Cosworth provided engines for Williams when it won its first championship in 1980.
The 2010 driver market was the main source of conversation around the Abu Dhabi paddock.
Kimi Raikkonen said he had narrowed down his F1 options for 2010 to his old team McLaren, while a switch to rallying or a year’s sabbatical also remained options.
Toyota had been chasing Raikkonen, but the Finn said he never considered a move there as he ponders his future following his ousting from Ferrari to accommodate Fernando Alonso.
“Toyota has not even been discussed,” Raikkonen told Finnish television station MTV3. “If I want to drive (F1) cars, then McLaren is the only option.”
Toyota’s driver options for next season were rapidly thinning out. Robert Kubica had also spurned the team’s advances and moved to Renault. Timo Glock said Friday he was likely to leave the team and Jarno Trulli is also expected to depart.
Glock, who is sitting out this weekend’s race due to a back injury, said Friday he is yet to sign a deal with a new team. There had been recent speculation linking Glock to Renault.
The German had a 2010 option with Toyota, but the team was yet to commit due to its pursuit of other drivers and uncertainty over next season’s budget, pending a decision by the parent company.
“Toyota can’t make a decision before Nov. 15, so that is the main reason why it doesn’t look like I can drive for Toyota again,” Glock said. “There are various teams I have good contacts through, and where we are in a good position for next year.”
Dixie State more dangerous at home
October 31, 2009 by Roger Underwood
CWU hits the road for GNAC rematch ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Skeptics might dismiss one of Blaine Bennett’s voiced concerns for Central Washington’s game today at Dixie State, which of course is also part of a weekly motivational package for his second-ranked Wildcats.
“They’re undefeated at home,” Bennett said of the Red Storm (4-5), whom CWU (9-0) will engage at 12:05 p.m. PDT at Hansen Stadium.
And it’s true that Dixie, when playing at St. George, Utah, is 4-0. It’s also true that the teams beaten by the Red Storm there are a collective 13-21, and that none has a winning record.
Bennett has not mentioned last year, when a Central team that finished 10-2 needed a last-second, 44-yard field goal from Garrett Rolsma to force overtime in a season-opener it eventually won at Dixie, 44-38.
So when the coach adds, “They’re a dangerous football team at home,” he has a point.
Also, the disparity in Central’s play from home to road figures in.
Last season the Wildcats overran Dixie 49-14 in Ellensburg. This year in Ellensburg, where CWU defeated Dixie 37-6 among its four home games, the Wildcats have outscored their opposition 151-33. The count is 113-80 elsewhere.
That said, however, there are other incentives today for Central.
“We’ve talked primarily about three things this week, and we started with our team meeting on Sunday,” Bennett said. “First, Dixie State is undefeated at home. No. 2, you don’t get that many chances to win a conference championship, and we can do that this week. We have banners for our conference championships and our players get rings. It’s a big deal to us.
“And third, a win Saturday helps us solidify our playoff position in Super Region Four.”
To be sure, Central remains the lone unbeaten in its region (there are only three in the nation), and the third and fourth ranked teams, Missouri Western and Midwestern State (Texas) have two losses each.
So with its strength of schedule, ranked second nationally among the 126 Division II teams with at least nine DII opponents, CWU could probably secure a playoff berth with a win today.
To maintain its ranking, however, which would mean a first-round bye and second-round home game, the Wildcats must beat Dixie and also Western Oregon, against whom they conclude their regular season next week on the road.
An 11-0 run, which would be Central’s second since 2002, seems more likely given Cole Morgan’s performance last week in his first start at quarterback.
“I thought Cole played a very good first half,” Bennett said, having turned to the senior transfer from Western Washington after repeated struggles by redshirt freshman Ryan Robertson. “He was very efficient. And I thought our whole team played well in the first half (of a 31-0 lead over Humboldt State that culminated in a 38-7 win). We started fast and the crowd got into it.”
