For the third time in a month, the Scotties edged their rival by one goal — 2-1 this time thanks to Caitlin Long’s late goal — and the prize Tuesday night was the biggest yet.
With Long’s decisive tally coming with three minutes left in the SCAC district semifinal match, Highland clinched a Class 1A state berth and will play for the district title Saturday at Royal.
“We’re very proud of the these girls and the way they handled the situation,” said Highland’s first-year coach Felix Hernandez. “It was a hard-fought match, just like you’d expect with these two teams. It was cold and windy but it was well played.”
Susi Jimenez got Highland on the board first, scoring with five minutes left in the first half on an assist from Andrea Wickenhagen.
The Rangers, however, answered back when Brittany Elston punched in a goal in the 49th minute.
Highland (15-3) will play defending champion Connell (16-2), a 2-1 winner over Kiona-Benton in Tuesday’s other semifinal, in the final game of a tripleheader Saturday at Royal at 3 p.m.
Naches Valley (10-7-1) will play at 11 a.m. in a winner-to-state, loser-out match.
