YVCC women will play for tourney title

YAKIMA, Wash. — It will be Yakima Valley and Walla Walla in today’s title game of the High Hopes Crossover Tournament in Sherar Gym.

The Yaks earned their 2 p.m. berth with a 77-71 defeat of Lower Columbia on Saturday while Walla Walla turned back the YVCC alumni 70-63.

Nicole DeRosier led Yakima Valley with 24 points while Anna Marchbanks had a second successive standout game with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Kate Urquhart added 13 boards as the Yaks outrebounded LC 54-37.

Leading only 33-32 at halftime, YVCC pulled away by shooting 53 percent over the final 20 minutes.

For the alums, Chelsie Morrison scored 15 points, Teresa Borton 14 and Elyse Maras 11, but Walla Walla got 37 from Boise State signee and defending Eastern Region MVP Kati Isham.

At 10 a.m. today the Yaks alumni will meet Seattle, which edged Southwesten Oregon 74-73. Bellevue, which thumped Clark 64-44, will meet Lower Columbia at noon.
