IBL says no Yakima team until 2011
December 31, 2009 by Dave Thomas
Minor basketball league says it will hold postseason tournament in SunDome ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — The International Basketball League is still coming to Yakima next spring — sort of.
As for Yakima getting its own franchise in the minor league, that will have to wait a year.
Citing a desire to make sure that everything is “done right,” IBL founder and commissioner Mikal Duilio announced Wednesday that the league will delay the launch of a team in Yakima until the 2011 season.
However, the league will conduct one of its two 2010 postseason tournaments in the SunDome this coming June, allowing local fans an opportunity to preview the product before Yakima comes on board the following spring.
“This (franchise) is a big deal and we wanted to make sure we did this right,” Duilio said Wednesday. “We think this will be a really, really great situation.”
Having that 15-month lead-in to the launch will allow the IBL to put the Yakima franchise in a strong position to succeed from the outset, he added.
The IBL will own the Yakima franchise, with Duilio handling the operations, including the hiring of a sales person, targeted for March, and a coach.
One item that is done, he said, is a tentative deal to play in the SunDome.
“Yakima will be our No. 1 priority,” Duilio said.
As for the tournament, set for late June, the top 16 IBL teams will be broken into two eight-team brackets, with one bracket coming to Yakima and the other going to Bellingham.
The winners of each three-day tournament will then meet for the IBL championship at a site to be determined.
Tickets for the Yakima tournament will go on sale starting March 1, with a tournament pass costing $25.
IBL teams play a 22-game season starting in late March and ending in late June.
Defensive delight for Granger girls
December 31, 2009 by Roger Underwood
Despite drought, Granger girls dispatch Colfax ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Watch Granger’s girls, and you’ll learn.
You will find out, among other things, how to properly run a variety of offensive sets with player and ball maneuvering, and also and how to defend effectively through movement of the feet.
Were you in the SunDome for the Spartans’ Shootout showdown with perennial power Colfax on Wednesday night, you’d also have seen how a team could go scoreless for more than a quarter and still win by 21.

Granger's Sam Zapien goes up for a shot past Colfax's Emily Shaw, left, Morgan Wilson, second from right, and Kayleigh Maltone, right during the first half of their SunDome Shootout game on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009. (Sara Gettys/Yakima Herald-Republic)

“We always say,” coach Andy Affholter explained after his team’s 55-34 triumph, “that even if we’re not scoring, we can still play defense.”
And improve to 6-0, even while going the final 4:17 of the second quarter and the first 4:09 of the third without a point.
Then again, the Spartans had come out breathing fire en route to a 21-3 lead.
“They’ve won state, like, how many times?” asked Ashlee Reddout, who scored eight of her game-high 16 points during the initial burst. “We really want to go undefeated this year. And we knew they would push us.”
The Bulldogs, who won five straight Class 1A titles, finished fourth in their final year in that classification and last year claimed the 2B crown, pieced together an 18-0 run during Granger’s drought.
Emily Shaw’s basket with 5:30 to play in the third quarter brought Colfax (4-2) to within 33-26.
But Emily Carpenter hit a 10-footer from the baseline at 3:51 and the Sparts compiled a 9-2 surge that carried into the fourth quarter. Janae Klarich, Granger’s other double-digit scorer with 14 points, scored five during the burst including one of her four 3-pointers.
“When they went to their zone,” Affholter said, “that took us out of their rhythm, and we were in a rhythm. But defensively we were solid. We held them to 18 points in the first half and 16 in the second.”
The Spartans also forced 18 turnovers — seven in the first quarter — while committing nine. And despite listing no one taller than 5-foot-8 while Colfax had two 6-footers and another player at 5-11, they were outrebounded by only 29-27, led by Reddout’s seven retrieves.
“We knew we’d get two good teams here,” said Bulldogs coach Corey Baerlocher. “But we’ve just been doing some things that aren’t acceptable. My son today said, ‘Dad, why don’t our players just do what we do,’ and I told them, ‘Look, an 8-year-old has this thing figured out.’”

Dreamed-up defense helps Granger boys
December 31, 2009 by Scott Sandsberry
YAKIMA, Wash. — Miguel Bazaldua had a dream Wednesday night. The following night, the Granger boys basketball team he coaches went out and turned it into a nightmare for the White Swan Cougars.
The dream Bazaldua had came after his Spartans had struggled in an overtime victory over Lakeside on the first night of the SunDome Shootout. That nocturnal memory took him back to his high school playing days at Mabton and a defense dreamed up by his old coach, Greg Hurn.
“It’s like an amoeba defense,” Bazaldua said after his team handed the Cougars a surprisingly one-sided 69-53 setback in a Shootout showdown of two teams with state-tournament ambitions. “I knew if we went straight zone, they’d kill us from outside. So we played this defense we played in high school — kind of sagging zone, man-to-man.
“We ran the defense (under Hurn at Mabton), and it always gave better-shooting teams, penetrating teams fits.”
It did the same to the Cougars for the entire first half, during which White Swan shot just 7-for-23 and fell behind 35-19. Seven points by Lawrence Fiander fueled a 13-0, third-quarter Cougar run , and senior post Cory Williams’s 22-point, six-rebound game kept White Swan (6-2) within striking range.
But Granger simply had too much of an offensive groove going.
Sharpshooting Granger sophomore Brandon Castro scored 13 of his game-high 20 points during the second quarter, while senior guard Brandon Oswalt — “the rock of our team,” Bazaldua said — and Mitchell Zapien each added 18 points for the unbeaten Spartans (6-0).
Oswalt also hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds as Granger — with nobody on the floor taller than 6-1 — took a dominating 38-27 edge on the boards.
“We always have to work hard on the boards, work hard on boxing out,” Oswalt said. “We know we’re never going to be the tallest team out there.”
The Spartans also play with a confidence and the timely passing and away-from-the-ball movement that bodes well for another visit to the SunDome two months down the line.
“I think a lot of that is because we’ve played together for so long,” Oswalt said. “Some of these guys I’ve played with since first grade. We just know each other so well. We’re all friends.”
And pretty good basketball players, too.
