Turnover-plagued Yaks fall again

December 31, 2009 by

OREGON CITY, Ore. — Jonathan Kirvin scored 18 points to lead five Yakima Valley scorers in double figures Wednesday, but the Yaks committed 32 turnovers en route to an 89-76 loss to fourth-ranked Tacoma in the Clackamas Holiday Tournament.

YVCC’s second straight defeat in the tourney, which came after an opening win, dropped its record to 6-6.

Willie Blodgett scored 13 points, Ryan Dornik 12, Kenneth Woods 12 and Terrell Evans 10 for the Yaks. Blodgett also had eight rebounds and five assists.

“We had 21 turnovers in the first half,” said Yakima Valley coach Ray Funk, whose team will next play on Jan. 9 in its Eastern Region opener at Wenatchee Valley. “When we weren’t turning the ball over, we were actually scoring.”

The Yaks trailed only 42-41 at intermission, and Funk said the final score was somewhat misleading because his team had to foul late.

YVCC played without Jordan Kidd, who scored 27 points in a Tuesday loss to top-ranked Lower Columbia. Kidd  sat out with ankle and groin problems sustained in that game. Funk said Derek January did not play for disciplinary reasons.

“We’re 6-6, which is just about average,” Funk said. “We’ve seen just about everybody and we’ve only played one home game. Hopefully that’s making us tougher and ready to take on the Eastern Region.”

White Swan pulls away to knock off previously unbeaten Connell ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — Tonight is for rivals, but Tuesday afternoon was for the rugged.

That’s the protective focus that White Swan’s boys, who tangle with Granger tonight, took into the first day of the SunDome Shootout against Connell, which earlier this month wrapped up an unbeaten season in football.

“We knew this was going to be a tough one, a battle all the way,” said Lawrence Fiander. “But it’s the kind of game we looked forward to so we can find out how we handle it.”

The Cougars handled it just fine, pulling away from the previously unbeaten Eagles for a 54-45 victory that started the 14-game, two-day tournament in the SunDome.

Fiander, White Swan’s sophomore point guard, tied his season high with 18 points as the Cougars boosted their record to 6-1.

“We were hoping to hold Connell in the 40s but we knew that would take a big effort because they are always physical and athletic,” said WS coach Manuel Rangel. “The boys definitely worked hard on defense.”

Connell (3-1), which had two early games rescheduled because of its march to the state football finals, did not have a player score in double figures.

“We’ve been getting better every game on defense, and we know that’s where we have to work the hardest,” said Fiander. “Our motto is the harder you work the harder it is to surrender. Losing to Tri-Cities Prep (52-49) showed us what can happen because they outworked us.”

Cory Williams produced his sixth double-digit game with 10 points for White Swan, which plays Granger tonight at 7:30.

“Sometimes you get kids coming in during the holidays a little rusty, but not these boys. They’re all gym rats,” Rangel said. “They’re always calling me asking to open the gym. They would go all day if they could.”

The Cougars rallied to beat Granger in last year’s Shootout, 50-42. And with Mid-Valley 2B league games still almost a month away, White Swan needs these tough games to keep improving.

“Playing Connell was great competition, and now we have Granger,” Fiander noted. “They can shoot, and they have Mitchell (Zapien). It’s going to take another big defensive game.”

Burbank edges La Salle

December 30, 2009 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — This season as with any other, when La Salle’s girls set out to accomplish a specific task on defense the job gets done. Few things in Valley prep basketball over the last decade have been as reliable as that.

And on Tuesday afternoon La Salle was at it again, holding Burbank and its four-year standout Tiffany Idler to season-low scoring in the opening contest of the SunDome Shootout.

But while Idler managed just six points and didn’t get half her average, it was her bounce pass to Jeni Akerblade and the resulting layup with three seconds left that lifted Burbank to a 34-32 victory in a showdown of unbeatens.

The Lightning (4-1) did enough damage with 24 turnovers to keep its record clean, but converting its pressure into points proved elusive against the 8-0 Coyotes.

“A lot of our offense comes off our defense and we struggled with that,” said La Salle coach Alyssa Goins. “We’re usually good for about 15 points or more in transition and we didn’t get that today.”

Chelsea Adkins’ basket with 1:05 left — La Salle’s only field goal in the fourth quarter balanced against six free throws — pulled the Lightning into a 32-32 tie. Idler was then whistled for traveling, giving La Salle a chance at the lead but an errant 3-point attempt was rebounded by Nicole Roberts with seven seconds to go.

Akerblade, one of four returning starters for Burbank, led her team with eight points. That was matched by La Salle’s Katie Vickers, who hit the game’s only two 3-pointers.

Savannah Bonny, who scored 53 points in three games before sitting out the last contest to rest some lingering soccer soreness, was a touch rusty and held to four points.

“Burbank played us man-to-man and we don’t see that much,” said Goins, whose speedy team is usually defended with a zone. “It was good for us to see that. Overall our effort was there. We held Idler to six, we had a great look at the end and we showed a lot of energy.”
La Salle returns today to face Vashon at 3 p.m.
