Turnover-plagued Yaks fall again

OREGON CITY, Ore. — Jonathan Kirvin scored 18 points to lead five Yakima Valley scorers in double figures Wednesday, but the Yaks committed 32 turnovers en route to an 89-76 loss to fourth-ranked Tacoma in the Clackamas Holiday Tournament.
YVCC’s second straight defeat in the tourney, which came after an opening win, dropped its record to 6-6.
Willie Blodgett scored 13 points, Ryan Dornik 12, Kenneth Woods 12 and Terrell Evans 10 for the Yaks. Blodgett also had eight rebounds and five assists.
“We had 21 turnovers in the first half,” said Yakima Valley coach Ray Funk, whose team will next play on Jan. 9 in its Eastern Region opener at Wenatchee Valley. “When we weren’t turning the ball over, we were actually scoring.”
The Yaks trailed only 42-41 at intermission, and Funk said the final score was somewhat misleading because his team had to foul late.
YVCC played without Jordan Kidd, who scored 27 points in a Tuesday loss to top-ranked Lower Columbia. Kidd sat out with ankle and groin problems sustained in that game. Funk said Derek January did not play for disciplinary reasons.
“We’re 6-6, which is just about average,” Funk said. “We’ve seen just about everybody and we’ve only played one home game. Hopefully that’s making us tougher and ready to take on the Eastern Region.”
