Ike-Davis on Tuesday
January 4, 2010 by Scott Spruill
Davis’ boys will take a 6-1 record into a rematch of their Dec. 12 home win, a 58-51 decision that was set up by a 12-2 run to close the third quarter.
Davis’ David Trimble and Ike’s Robert Bonser led their teams down the stretch, combining to score 25 of their 37 points in the second half. The Pirates committed 14 fouls and gave up three 3-pointers in the first half, leading to a 27-24 deficit at the break, but then fouled only eight times in the second half while Ike went 0-for-6 from long range.
The Cadets (5-2) will no doubt expect a more energetic game from point guard James Lopez, who was recovering from the flu in the first encounter and managed just two points in the second half. But Davis can also expect more from guard Herman Mendoza, who was scoreless against Ike but broke out for 21 points against unbeaten Richland two weeks ago.
Ike’s girls (2-5) defeated Davis 53-46 on Dec. 12. The Pirates (1-6) cut a 19-point deficit to 46-40 in the final period but Brittany Gaut made eight free throws — part of her game-high 19 points — down the stretch to seal it.
Knowing the Ike-Davis rematch would start our 2010 slate, I dug around during the holidays to find the top single-game scoring performances in the boys’ 125-game history of the city rivalry. Here’s what I found:
