X Games: Medal eludes Parsons

January 30, 2010 by

ASPEN, Colo. — Yakima’s Joe Parsons fell just short of his second medal in as many days at the Winter X Games.

He scored an 87.66 in the snowmobile best trick competition to take fourth place in the event. Heath Frisy (90.66) won the gold, Daniel Boldin (89.33) took silver and Levi LaVallee (89.00) captured bronze.

Parsons, who won silver in the freestyle on Thursday, has another chance for a medal Sunday when he competes in the knock out event on ESPN2.

In other events Shaun White has successfully landed his most difficult trick to win his third straight title, only about an hour after clipping his face against the top of the halfpipe while trying the same move in practice.

The 2006 Olympic gold medalist pulled off his newly patented Double McTwist 1260 in the first run of the superpipe finals Friday to score a 95.33 — 1.67 points better than Iouri Podladtchikov of Switzerland.

Elk poaching an ongoing problem

January 29, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — The latest of a series of elk-poaching incidents near the Clover Springs elk feeding site has WDFW enforcement officials looking for assistance.

Do you know someone who has recently come home with, begun showing around or bragging about a fresh new set of what are probably some pretty big elk antlers?

Last Sunday, someone shot and killed a large bull elk near the Clover Springs site, which is along the Clover Springs (1600) Road off the Nile Loop Road. It’s one of a half-dozen places in which volunteers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife provide winter feed to help the animals through the coldest months of the year.

The bull must have been a pretty impressive rack of antlers, too, because that’s all the scofflaws took — the antlers. They just chain-sawed those suckers right off, and left the body lying there.

WDFW enforcement Capt. Rich Mann said the poaching must have taken place sometime after 4:30 p.m. because there were WDFW staffers or volunteers at the site until then. “We don’t know if (the elk) was spotlighted,” he said. “We do know there were no tracks, because the snow had covered everything.”

Typically, poaching around any feed site is reported by people in the area, Mann said. “The locals kind of watch the area, but nobody happened to see that one. We’ve had really good support, but on this one we don’t have anything on it.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call the state’s confidential poaching hotline at 1-877-WDFW-TIP (877-933-9847), or the regional WDFW enforcement office at 509-457-9315.

In two different poaching incidents on Jan. 16 and a third on Jan. 23, nearby residents or passersby reported the violations, and WDFW enforcement Capt. Rich Mann expects the county to file charges in each case.

In another case in December, a Yakima man killed a large, 7-by-7 branch-antlered bull in the Cowiche Mountain area, and prosecutors are expected to file charges on that one as well.

The Clover Springs site has endured a higher incidence of poaching, Mann said, because it’s more remote than some of the other feed-site areas around which elk congregate during the winter months.

“If you compare it to our other feeding sites, it’s out of the way. It doesn’t have a lot of public around it,” Mann said. “(The main feed lot at) Oak Creek is extremely visible. If somebody went in and shot an animal there, the public would probably mob them.”

A Thin Red Line

Unbeaten Gonzalez continues Sunnyside’s dominance at 103 pounds ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — When Nathan Gonzalez sifts through the details of his technical advancements in wrestling, there are obviously plenty of good reasons behind his 31-0 record.

Attack speed.

Defense into offense.

Relentless footwork.

Sunnyside wrestler Nathan Gonzalez wrestles Alexio Garcia of Davis during the 103-pound final of the SunDome Mat Classic in December. (Andy Sawyer/Yakima Herald-Republic)

Those are layers on the surface of a sophomore season that has earned the Sunnyside 103-pounder five tournament titles and a load of momentum heading into the postseason, a countdown to Mat Classic that begins next week.

But under those layers is a deeper and more meaningful reason for Gonzalez’s stellar season, one that sounds like a soldier’s and is tied to program, family and pride.

“There’s a tradition here, and I think about that a lot,” Gonzalez said. “It’s in my family and I want to carry that on.”

Sunnyside’s wrestling heritage dates back through 32 state champions, the most in Valley history. But the tradition that Gonzalez is involved with is at 103 pounds, and right now the Grizzlies are on a remarkable run.

Sunnyside has produced the last two Class 3A state champions — Christian Reyes in 2009 and Steven Romero in ‘08 — and it has had a championship finalist five years in a row. Last year Reyes not only won the title but faced the young Gonzalez in an all-Sunnyside final.

“That was like the ultimate thing, and had only been done three times before,” said Sunnyside coach George Paulus. “It was tough for Nathan but I told him afterward, ‘You have nothing to be ashamed of — you finished second at state. This was Christian’s time, and you will have yours.’”

Gonzalez understands the process of ascension, but when you’ve got a shot at a title it’s difficult to miss it, even as a freshman. His older brother, J.T., was second at state at 135 pounds two years ago and racked up 114 career wins. His cousin Isaac Romero was a three-time state runner-up before breaking through with a 112 title, also two years ago.

“Our families take a lot of pride in this and we help each other,” Gonzalez explained. “When Christian and me were together every day last season, that was a big help for me. My brother said if we kept working hard (state) could come down to the two of us and it did.”

Sunnyside’s 103 state reign
Year Name Place Record
2010 Nathan Gonzalez ??? 30-0
2009 Christian Reyes 1st 37-5
2009 Nathan Gonzalez 2nd 26-4
2008 Steven Romero 1st 41-3
2007 Steven Romero 2nd 36-6
2006 Isaac Romero 2nd 28-5
2005 Isaac Romero 2nd 37-4

Just as Gonzalez was Reyes’ understudy last season, Reyes matured in Romero’s shadow two years ago. The Grizzlies have a quality No. 2 at 103 again this season in Jamie Gonzalez (no relation to Nathan) and the hope is to have two 103 state medalists for the third year in a row.

“We’ve definitely had a nice run at 103, but that’s traditionally been one of the strongest weights for us,” Paulus said. “We’ve not only had some depth there, but real good kids at heavier weights that they can practice with.”

Like with any run of momentum, the action tends to perpetuate itself through the high-level experience of the athletes and applied science of the coaches.

“All these kids have had extremely good speed moves — it’s such a fast weight,” Paulus said. “At 103 you’ve got to be able to fly, scramble and scrap. And because everything happens so quick, you’ve got to be able to think quick. Nathan has taken that forward from Christian and Steven.”

There are elements in Nathan Gonzalez’s arsenal that can be directly tied to his championship predecessors. It was like field study watching firsthand how to march through a Mat Classic bracket.

From Christian Reyes: “You’ve got to be good on both sides of it,” Gonzalez learned. “You take a shot, and defend a shot and always be ready for both.”

From Steven Romero: “Don’t stop moving. With Steven, once he picked something up, he finished it.”

And now it’s Gonzalez’s turn.

East Valley knocks off Ellensburg

January 29, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Charging out to a 20-0 lead on its home mat, East Valley went on to beat Ellensburg 38-21 in CWAC wrestling Thursday night.

Three decisions, a technical fall and forfeit win accounted for the early streak, which spanned five matches from 285 to 125, and the momentum was sustained later by a three-match streak at 145, 152 and 160.

The Red Devils finished conference at 6-3. Toppenish locked down third at 7-2 with a 40-31 win at Ephrata.

The conference title will be decided today when Othello hosts Selah. The CWAC district tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Ellensburg.

• Sunnyside tried to keep Moses Lake from an unbeaten CBBN season, opening an 18-9 lead on the Chiefs through seven matches. But ML put together four straight wins from 135 to 152 and claimed a 36-24 Columbia Division victory.

Christian Gonzalez’s 19-12 win at 215 clinched Eisenhower’s 38-32 win over Hanford in a Cascade dual.

The 3A sub-regional will be held at Mead next weekend while Wenatchee hosts the CBBN 4A district tournament.

• Zillah finished its unbeaten run through the SCAC West with a 56-6 win at Naches Valley. The West Division will hold its district tournament next Saturday at Granger.

Selah boys team is in medical survival mode

January 29, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Kip Harris needs to roll his players in bubble wrap and isolate them in a vacuum chamber. If not, the way things are going at Selah, he may not have anybody left.

Already shuffling his lineup with the absence of Drew Washut to a foot injury, Harris got word this week that the CWAC’s leading scorer, Nick Longmire, has mononucleosis.

And this with third-ranked Ephrata coming to town tonight.

“We have to take things one day at a time now. That’s all we can do,” Harris said. “We’re asking some kids to step and they are. We’ll just hang in there the best we can.”

Ailments have abounded for the Vikings — Pablo Chavez (split lip needed six stitches) and Daniel Hernandez (wisdom teeth removed) have also missed time recently — but when 43 points takes a seat it feels like a curse.

Despite Washut sitting out the last 10 days with plantar fasciitis, Selah (9-1, 10-2) managed to extend its win streak to eight games over the weekend and move into a share of the CWAC lead with Ephrata.

Part of the reason was Longmire ramping up his already highly productive offense, scoring 26 points against Othello and a season-high 30 the next day against Quincy.

But now with Washut and Longmire out for an indefinite period, Harris has to circle the wagons, call up some JV kids and hope for the best. And at least he has some time with the CWAC only one game into its second half. The final game of the regular season is three weeks away.

“Game by game we’ll fill the holes and do what we can,” said Harris, whose squad will have the added challenge of playing five of the last seven conference games on the road. “There’s still a lot of time left and we’ll just have to play through this. I’d rather have to deal with it now rather than district.”

Sharing the moment

For Eisenhower’s Dan Eyman, it was gratifying enough to earn the District 5 coach of the year award at last weekend’s WSCA Football Coaches Hall of Fame banquet in Bellevue.

Making it so much better was his longtime defensive coordinator Gary Jimenez standing alongside him with the assistant coach award.

“Gary’s been with me the whole time here,” Eyman said, “and he puts in an unbelievable amount of hard work. It was great to share that with him.”

Jimenez has been Eyman’s defensive coordinator for eight years and last season they directed the Cadets to a school-record 11 wins and state quarterfinal appearance.

Swimming into sunset

It was great while it lasted.

East Valley exchange student and standout swimmer Rodolphe Dienst, who ranks first or second in the Valley in six events, is heading home to Belgium and won’t be participating in the postseason.

“He was a great asset to the team,” said Selah coach Ken Yager, whose program co-ops with East Valley. “He gave the rest of the swimmers something to shoot for.”

Dienst leads the Valley in the 50 free (22.73), 100 back (59.41) and 100 breast (1:03.86).

Rams get green light

With the WIAA’s Executive Board handing down final decisions on appeals and requests last weekend, the enrollment breakdown for the 2010-2012 cycle is now complete and can be found at www.wiaa.com

West Valley and Sammamish had their requests to opt up to Class 3A approved. That brings the total number of opt-ups from 2A to 3A to 24.

Life Christian and University Prep had requests for opting up from 2B to 1A also approved. Brewster’s appeal to stay 2B and not opt up to 1A was granted.

CBBN’s power side

How’s this for depth in the Cascade Division of CBBN boys basketball: Kamiakin is ranked seventh in the state but is no better than fourth in its division.

This week’s 4A state poll has four Cascade teams — Walla Walla (5), Richland (6), Kamiakin (7) and Eisenhower (8).

Two showdowns loom this week — Eisenhower visits Walla Walla tonight and Kamiakin hosts Richland on Saturday.

From the sidelines

• Mike Hinz, a 1963 East Valley grad, was inducted into the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame earlier this month. Hinz has coached Pullman to six state team titles and has been named the state’s coach of the year twice.

• Selah and Othello, both 8-0 in CWAC dual meets, will clash for the conference wrestling title in Othello tonight at 7.

• Wapato’s A.J. Yarlott averaged 11.8 points in her first six games and 18.8 in her second six, helping the Wolves take a four-game win streak into big games this weekend against Ellensburg and East Valley.
