Turning Point for Knights
February 27, 2010 by Scott Sandsberry
SC boys fend off Wellpinit to earn berth in 1B final ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Maybe the deciding moment came when point guard Steven Bosma trotted onto the court Friday evening for Sunnyside Christian’s semifinal against athletic Wellpinit — arguably the quickest team in the Class 1B tournament field — and felt as if he was, well, a step quicker than normal.
And then he played that way.

Or maybe the crux point was just over an hour later when, the Knights’ 10-point second-half lead now down to a tenuous three, senior wing Tim De Vries went up in the lane intending to pass, had no one to pass it to, and put up the ugliest shot of the night …

“… And absolutely willed that thing over the front of the rim,” Knights coach Dean Wagenaar said of what might well have been the biggest and most unexpected basket of his team’s 56-48 triumph over the Redskins. After that improbable 12-footer, Wellpinit never again got closer than four points.
Or maybe the pendulum had simply swung Sunnyside Christian’s way the night before, when the Knights (22-3) rallied from a seemingly insurmountable 19-point, second-half deficit simply to reach this high-voltage semifinal and, ultimately, tonight’s 7 p.m. championship game against St. John-Endicott.
“No shakes. We had no shakes. Nothing can be worse than being 19 down, and having to come back from that,” said Bosma, whose 14-point, eight-rebound, six-assist, four-assist night was as complete a performance as he has ever played. “After that, I was …” He paused and grinned. “Content.”
And quick. Let’s not forget that part. His four steals included a backside strip and coast-to-coast layup that capped a 7-0 run that created that 10-point third-quarter bulge, plus a diving steal that both created a turnover and sent him to the foul line in the final minute, as the Knights were trying to fend off yet another valiant Redskin rally.
“He’s quick. He’s stepping up. He’s had a huge tournament so far,” said 6-foot-6 center Steven Broersma, most of whose 17 points (on 8-for-11 shooting) came on nifty assist passes from Bosma. “He and Kevin (De Jong) have really been huge here.”
De Jong even got to cap the game with something the 6-5 junior center, who’s deadly from the field and often deathly at the foul line, doesn’t do very often: He sank back-to-back free throws with 12 seconds to go to clinch the victory.
“When that first one went in, I had a smile on my face,” said De Jong, who was still smiling 20 minutes later. “It felt so good when it went in. Hey, I went 3-for-4 (at the line) — that’s my best ever!”
Against Wellpinit (23-4), which had knocked No.1-ranked, previously unbeaten Rosalia into the consolation bracket the night before, the Knights certainly needed a best-ever effort. Redskin star Cody Flett, who had scored 20 in the win over Rosalia, had an abysmal 3-for-20 shooting night, but Dakota Ford picked up the slack with 11 first-half points, including a trio of 3-pointers. And Kennedy Seyler racked up 17 points, knifing through the lane for skywalking layups or pulling up for 15-foot jumpers.
One of Seyler’s slashing drives for a basket and two mid-range Flett jumpers had rallied Wellpinit, and the Knights’ lead was just 48-45 with 5:10 remaining when De Vries found himself in mid-air with nary a target in sight.
“(The Redskins) took away the pass, and” — when he decided he had no choice but to throw up an off-balance shot — “I was hoping I could at least get a rebound,” said DeVries, who finished with10 points. “I was hoping for that. Instead I found, well, two points.”
That was a lucky break, perhaps, but these were different Knights than the ones who had fallen into that 19-point well against Almira/Coulee-Hartline on Thursday.
“I told the kids last night was when they grew up,” Wagenaar said. “That was when we stopped playing not to lose. You’ve got to play like you’re in a pit with snakes and wild animals and you’ve got to fight to stay alive. You’ve got to have that pit mentality. Tonight, they had it.”

Knights endure to clinch trophy
February 27, 2010 by Scott Spruill
Sunnyside Christian will face Bickleton for 4th place ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Renee Dalrymple hobbled off the court just before halftime, her swollen right ankle far too tender for full weight. Worse yet, it was the same foot that last year, with a broken bone, caused her to miss nearly two months of the season.
Medically it was a good time for a break, perhaps even a long one, but emotionally it wasn’t even close.

With a trophy on the line in the Class 1B state tournament, the Sunnyside Christian senior didn’t consider sitting out the second half of a loser-out game Friday against North Sound Christian.
“Not an option,” said Dalrymple, normally a stream of smiles and giggles but stone-faced with these words. “At first I thought, ‘oh no, not this again.’ But at halftime we taped it again so I could hardly feel it. I was ready.”
And so, after some early fidgeting, were the Knights.
Shaking off some dicey perimeter shooting and powered inside by Dalrymple’s double-double, Sunnyside Christian eliminated the Lions 50-38 to clinch the program’s fifth straight trophy and 12th overall.
The Knights (20-5) will play Bickleton (18-8) in an all-Greater Columbia B League matchup today at 1:30 p.m. for fourth and seventh place.
“It took us a while to get going,” said Dalrymple, who contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds in her best post performance of the tournament. “It was our heart. We had to want it and we played like that in the second half.”
Dalrymple’s back-to-back putbacks in the second quarter gave the Knights the lead for good and triggered an 11-0 run that stretched into the third period.
But playmaker Melissa Castor kept North Sound in the game, scoring 26 of the Lions’ 38 points with four 3-pointers. Castor’s two free throws followed by a field goal early in the final period drew North Sound within 38-31 and made SC coach Al Smeenk nervous.
“Last night was so draining, to give that much energy physically and psychologically,” he said, referring to Thursday’s two-point quarterfinal loss. “Today they say, ‘Oh, we’re ready,’ but you’re never sure. It was a tough start, but the girls really pulled themselves together and fought for the win.”
Marisa Broersma converted a 3-point play with 5:08 left to answer Castor’s flurry and that started a 12-3 clinching run.
“It was a very important game because we knew Bickleton had already won,” Dalrymple said. “We were league champions and we would feel real bad if Bickleton got a trophy and we didn’t.”
Analisa Van Oostrum made 6 of 8 free throws and scored a team-high 14 points, and Kelly Newhouse complimented Dalrymple inside with eight points and seven rebounds to offset SC’s 0-for-12 effort from 3-point range.
“I didn’t have many words of wisdom at halftime,” said Smeenk, whose team led 22-16 at the break. “Just that if you felt bad last night, you’ll feel worse with a loss today. The kids dug deep and played more of their game in the second half. This kind of game is always tough, but we got through it.”

Pirates display staying power
February 27, 2010 by Dave Thomas
Bickleton earns trophy in first trip to state in 29 years ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — After 29 years, Bickleton’s girls were not going to go quietly into the night.
Not even after a humbling 58-point loss that would’ve sucked the spirit from the most determined teams.
No, these Pirates were back at the state basketball tournament after a nearly three decade absence and they had no intention of leaving the SunDome empty handed.

That resolve manifested itself in a suffocating defensive effort that forced a head-shaking 52 turnovers, and clutch second-half shooting from Star Kibby, Morgan McBride and Aymie Osborn as Bickleton pulled away from Wilson Creek 58-41 in a Class 1B state consolation game Friday afternoon.

The victory assures the Pirates (18-8) of a state trophy, either fourth or seventh depending on the result of today’s 1:30 p.m. game against fellow Greater Columbia League foe Sunnyside Christian.
“This feels great. Twenty nine years is a long time,” said Kibby, who had a game-high 19 points and 10 of Bickleton’s whopping 32 steals. “To be the team that finally ends that drought is awesome.”
“We waited 29 years and now we’re playing for a trophy,” coach Emily Barnhart said. “This is so fantastic.”
Following Thursday’s 76-18 loss to top-ranked Colton, the Pirates could’ve been excused for still being in a daze Friday. Instead, the loss seemed to galvanize this group.
“We knew that game (vs. Colton) would be tough,” Kibby said. “But we just put it behind us and played a great game today.”
After a slow start, Bickleton scored six straight points to open a 10-4 lead, an advantage they would never relinquish, although Wilson Creek made numerous runs to get within one possession, the last at 40-37 with about 51?2 minutes to play.
That’s when McBride nailed a 3-pointer, starting a 7-0 burst that featured baskets by Kibby and Osborn.
After a Wilson Creek basket, Kibby scored on a fastbreak layin and added two free throws and the Pirates were well on their way to victory.
“That’s what kept us going. We were not going to let them get ahead of us,” said Kibby, who scored 10 points in the second half, with six in the final period. “That got us fired up.”
“Offensively, we looked for the girl who was open and everyone stepped up,” Barnhart said.
In addition to Kibby, McBride scored seven of her 13 points in the second half, including five in the fourth quarter, Osborn added all eight of her points in the game’s final nine minutes, and Nakai Kibby had six crucial second-half points.
That balance was necessary because top scorer Katelynn Clinton was held in check, scoring just seven points until a three-point play with 1:32 to play, and also got into foul trouble, sitting the final four minutes of the third quarter after getting her fourth. Still, she managed a double-double with 10 points and 10 steals.
“When Katelynn gets in trouble, we always have someone step up,” McBride said. “Once we get rolling, everyone feeds off that energy.”

One tough hurdle left for Colton
February 27, 2010 by Scott Spruill
No. 3 ACH standing in the way of Wildcat repeat ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — After surviving “a street fight” on Friday, Clark Vining and his top-ranked Colton girls are bracing for another tonight.
But the comforting thing for the Wildcats is they know these streets well.
With rock-solid defense carrying the day in Friday’s Class 1B state semifinals, Colton defeated Hunters 40-23 and Almira/Coulee-Hartline dispatched Pateros 48-28 in the nightcap at the SunDome.

That sets up a 9 p.m. championship game tonight between the defending champion Wildcats (24-1) and third-ranked ACH (23-3), which placed fifth a year ago.
After rolling to 79-15 and 76-18 runaways in the first two days of the tournament, Colton had to re-gear for an entirely different intensity against tough-minded Hunters.
“That’s where the experience comes in,” Vining said. “Last year we were in the same boat (with opening scores of 66-15 and 65-15) and we had to really pick it up. We knew Columbia (Hunters) would bring it, and it turned into a grind-it-out game.”
After outscoring its first two state opponents 44-1 in the first quarter, Colton found itself trailing Hunters 8-7 through eight minutes on Friday. A 12-0 run to open the second quarter put the Wildcats in charge, but Hunters wouldn’t let go.

With six minutes left, the stubborn Lions were still within 29-22 before 6-footer McKenzie Heaslet finally gave Colton some breathing room with a 3-pointer.
“We kept our composure when things weren’t going our way early,” Vining noted. “Being fresh helped, and I think we wore them down a little. Most of our kids played only a half in each of those (first two) games, and we needed every bit of that.”
ACH has encountered much more resistance on the way to the final, having defeated St. John-Endicott 64-48 and Sunnyside Christian 59-57 in the first two days. With wins today, SC would finish fourth and SJE fifth.
The Warriors scored only 12 points in the first half against Pateros and trailed by five at the break, but ACH woke up and dominated the second half, 36-11.
A 13-0 run in the final period put it away for ACH, which hasn’t won a state title but was the Class B runner-up in 2001, ’04 and ’05.
Hunters (23-5) and Pateros (18-7) will play for third and sixth today at 5 p.m.

Miller’s return sparks SJE
February 27, 2010 by Scott Sandsberry
Eagles senior overcomes knee aliments, surgery ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Last summer, the right kneecap belonging to Warren Miller — the 6-foot-4 four-year-starting mainstay of the St. John-Endicott basketball program — went one way at a basketball camp when the rest of his leg went another. That was dislocation No. 1.
Weeks later, during a pickup game, the knee did it again. Dislocation No. 2.
“The doctors said there was an 80 percent chance it could happen again,” Miller said. So, on Aug. 19, he had surgery that, he was told, would sideline him for four to six months.
Six would mean the Eagles’ basketball season would be without him. Four months, well …
“I was praying for that (four-month recovery) since October,” St. John-Endicott coach Rick Winters said Friday night after Miller scored half his team’s points in a 44-41 semifinal victory over Moses Lake Christian, putting the Eagles into tonight’s title game against Sunnyside Christian.
“We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him,” Winters added. “On the other hand, he knows he can’t do it without his buddies, his teammates. He’s a pleasure to coach, and he’s a wonderful leader out there.”
Miller missed the Eagles’ first 10 games and they started out 3-7. But while their 11 losses are the most ever for a Class B tournament boys finalist, their 16-11 record is misleading — they’ve gone a very respectable 13-4 with Miller in the lineup.
“I knew we had a good team. We just had to put it together,” said Miller, who also had 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals to go with his 8-for-12 shooting night. “We’re peaking at the right time, and everything’s clicking.”
For a guy who couldn’t even jog two months ago, to be playing in the state championship is a dream-come-true.
“Ever since you’re young, you dream about playing at state, playing in the state championship,” Miller said. “Doing it like this has been surreal. It’s been great.”
