Sparling, Perez due back Thursday for Wildcats

YAKIMA, Wash. — Coach Greg Sparling and guard Humberto Perez, both of whom missed Central Washington’s narrow Saturday night loss at Western Oregon, will be with the Wildcats for their two-game Alaska road trip which starts Thursday in Fairbanks.

Sparling drove home before the Western Oregon game, a 77-74 CWU loss, due to a family emergency while Perez stayed home to deal with personal issues, the coach said.

“Humberto had some things he needed to take care of, and did,” said Sparling, who drove from Monmouth, Ore. to Ellensburg early Saturday morning because of a medical problem involving his wife, Kristin.

His sons, Coleman (12) and Jake (10) called 911, Sparling said, and Kristin Sparling, a former CWU track and field athlete, was doing well.

“I’m really proud of the way my kids handled the situation,” Sparling said. “It was pretty scary.”

Perez, a junior and former Davis standout, is the Wildcats fourth-leading scorer at 11.3 points per game.
