Wheeler sets top time in 200 freestyle

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Ian Wheeler came into the state swimming championships as a clear contender in both of his events, and on Friday at the King County Aquatic Center, he did nothing to change that assessment.

The Eisenhower High senior posted the best time in the 200-yard freestyle, lowering his own Valley record, and, although he was third in the 500 free preliminaries, he shaved more than 8 seconds off his Valley record in that event as well.

Wheel-er’s time of 1 minutes, 41.62 seconds in the 200 free was just .03 seconds ahead of Stadium’s D’Boreaux Cann. That time, 2.25 seconds better than his Valley record, was an all-American time.

In the 500 free, Wheeler clocked a 4:37.34, 8.10 seconds quicker than his previous best, to earn all-American consideration. He trailed only Reid Walker from Garfield (4:36.17) and Matt Roe of Stanwood (4:36.40) in Friday’s prelims.

In the 3A meet, West Valley’s Taylor McDowell made the finals of the 100 and 50 free, finishing fifth in both. He had a time of 49.39 in the 100 free, which was a new school record, and a 22.66 clocking in the 50 free.

West Valley diver Trent Miller is 16th with a 173.00 total and advanced to today’s final round.

In the 2A meet, three Prosser swimmers and two Selah relay teams and an individual reached today’s finals.

Prosser’s James Wildman was sixth in the 50 free, Branden Hobbick was seventh in the 100 butterfly, and Nolan Saam was seventh in the 100 breaststroke.

Selah’s 200 medley relay team of Alex Yager, Cassidy Beebe, Kyle Raschko and Grant Bardwell was seventh Friday, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Yager, Bardwell, Garrett Borchart and Raschko was eighth.

Raschko also qualified in the 200 individual medley, finishing sixth.
