Welton Pitches Yaks to Split

March 31, 2010 by

PENDLETON, Ore. — Derek Welton pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts Wednesday as Yakima Valley shut out Blue Mountain 3-0 for a split of its Eastern Region-opening doubleheader.

The Timberwolves won the opener 5-0.

Welton, a former Selah standout, had perfect game for 5 2/3 innings. He walked none.

Ned Jones’ RBI single in the sixth inning provided the Yaks (13-6 overall) all the scoring they would need. Brian Mourer had hit, two walks and a stolen base and Trevor Dallman doubled and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

In the opener, Kyle Cruzen and Curtis Enger combined on a two-hitter for Blue Mountain (8-10).

YVCC’s Steven Schoonover pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while Konrad Mueller was 1 for 3 with two walks.

CWU 19th in nation, 5th in region

March 31, 2010 by

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — For the first time in the program’s 18-year history, Central Washington’s fastpitch team is ranked in a national poll.

The Wildcats, who finished second in last weekend’s Tournament of Champions at Turlock, Calif., were 19th in this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II poll.

CWU (18-8) was also fifth in the first Division II West Regional poll — its highest ranking as member of D-II — and was the only GNAC team so listed.

After not receiving votes in last week’s national poll, Central defeated then-third-ranked Hawaii Pacific in the T of C semifinals before falling to No. 14 Sonoma State in the title game.

The final regional poll will eventually determine the five at-large teams that will join the GNAC, PacWest and CCAA champions in the West Regional playoffs in May.

Central, which leads Western Oregon by two games in the conference race, travels to Nampa for a four-game series with Northwest Nazarene this weekend.

Gary Frederick has 298 wins as CWU’s fastpitch coach and 696 total at the university, counting 234 in baseball and 164 in women’s basketball.

All matches are free and located at the CWU Rugby Pitch next to Tomlinson Stadium.

Friday’s games: Central Washington vs. Sacramento State, 1 p.m.; Utah vs. Washington, 3 p.m.

Pleger headed to YMCA’s Short Course Nationals

March 31, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Already one of the Valley’s elite teenage girls swimmers of all time, Emilie Pleger is taking her talents to another level.

The 17-year-old Eisenhower junior will compete in three events at the YMCA National Short Course Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on April 7-10.

Pleger has competed for the Yakima YMCA Swim Team since she was 9 and will be the club’s first swimmer in the Short Course Nationals since 1991.

With a versatile mix of technique and speed, Pleger qualified in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and the 50 freestyle.

One of the largest youth swimming and diving meets in the country, Pleger’s three events have drawn a total field of 533 entries. Her highest seed is 43rd in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.74.

In the Valley’s all-time high school lists, Pleger ranks second in the 100 breast and fifth in the 50 free.

YYST head coach Roger Coburn has coached and competed in the Short Course Nationals before, and Sally Parrish — an assistant for Colburn — was the program’s last qualifier in 1991.
