Draw may favor local boys

YAKIMA, Wash. — Fresh off its thrilling CWAC district championship victory over Ephrata, the Wapato boys will play directly after Grandview in the early half of Wednesday’s first-round games in the Class 2A state basketball tournament.

Grandview (16-8), which won two loser-out games to claim the CWAC’s third state berth, will open at 10:30 a.m. in the SunDome against fifth-ranked Fife (20-3), which won the West Central district title last Friday.

Wapato (17-5) will follow at 12:30 p.m. against Deer Park (15-7), the Great Northern district runner-up.

Both Grandview and Wapato are in the opposite semifinal bracket from top-ranked and defending champion Squalicum (22-1) and 2008 champion Ephrata (20-2).

In the girls tournament, CWAC district champion Prosser (19-3) has a first-round matchup at 5:30 p.m. with West Central runner-up Kingston (17-6) and high-scoring guard Sophia Baetz.

Ellensburg (18-6) gets the 9 p.m. nightcap with fourth-ranked Archbishop Murphy (21-2), which owns a 21-game win streak and won the Northwest district title.

CWAC district runner-up East Valley (18-4) drew an early call with a 10:30 a.m. pairing against Pullman (16-6). If the Red Devils win that game they would likely face top-ranked River Ridge (22-1), which drew the 9 a.m. opener.

The loaded quarterfinal bracket is where Ellensburg sits. Prior to the Bulldogs’ game with Murphy, unbeaten and second-ranked West Valley of Spokane (22-0) plays Black Hills at 7:30 p.m.
