Ex-Davis Coach, Wife Die in Crash

March 29, 2010 by

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — A Davis High School graduate who went on to coach his alma mater’s football team died this weekend in a rollover crash in California.

George Perry and his wife, Clara, were killed Sunday evening when their Ford Explorer rolled multiple times off the Interstate 15  in the Cajon Pass area, about 25 miles from their hometown of Rancho Cucamonga, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin newspaper reported.

Perry was the athletic director for the Pomona Unified School District in Pomona, Calif.

He graduated from Davis High School in 1970 and returned to serve as head football coach for the Pirates between 1988 and 1990. He then coached a new football program at Cheyenne High School in Las Vegas, Nev., and was inducted into the Southern Nevada 4A Football Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame.

Rivalry Blooming Between Vikings, Bulldogs

March 29, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — If it’s March it must be time for prep baseball, which means it must also be time for some good-natured banter between coaches regarding who has the team to beat.

In the not-so-old days such sparring would usually involve rivals Mike Archer of Selah and Klayton Wyckoff of West Valley. Not only were they friends and mentors of two Upper Valley programs, they were faculty-mates at Selah Intermediate School.

The Vikings, Wyckoff would insist, should be considered the league favorite because of their history and/or returning players. The Rams, Archer countered, should always No. 1 going in because their enrollment was largest of all schools in the old Mid-Valley League.

Since the competitive landscape has changed, and Wyckoff has taken his teaching credentials to West Valley, the Vikings (currently in the CWAC) and Rams (now of the CBBN) tongue-in-cheek feud has ebbed.

But now there’s a new rival on Selah’s block.

Ellensburg is by all accounts well-stocked with talent and experience, something not even new coach Todd Gibson will deny. But he is not buying Archer’s claim that the Bulldogs are top-heavy league favorites.

Even if they do teach together at Selah Intermediate School. And also if Gibson played American Legion ball for Archer back in the day.

“He’s the three-time defending CWAC champion,” Gibson says, “so we’re chasing him. Until somebody knocks them off (and no one has at this writing), they’re clearly the team to beat. I don’t think they’ve lost a handful of games the last several years, and they’ve made the state championship game two of the last three years.

“Also, we haven’t beaten them the last nine tries.”

Says Archer, “Todd’s kids are just … man, they’re just really good.”

Says Gibson, “I’m not going for the old teacher-student scenario. We have some experienced kids, but we’ve never really tasted the kind of success they have, and that means something.”

Speaking of success, Naches Valley will have the enviable task of defending the school’s first state title since 1991. And while the Rangers lost a rock-solid core of seniors who led the Rangers to three successive Class 1A state final four appearances, coach Bill Walker’s cupboard is hardly bare.

“This is a new group of guys,” Walker said, “and we don’t want them to try to live up to try to live up to the expectations of last year’s team. We’re just asking them to do the best at what they’re able to do, and we’ll be happy with that.”

Goldendale, Cle Elum and Zillah figure to be strong SCAC contenders, especially coach Lyle Stevens’ Timberwolves who return all nine starters from last year’s district tournament team.

At Davis, veteran coach Pete Orgill lost only three seniors while first-year head man Ryan Froula has welcomed seven returning starters at Eisenhower.

COLUMBIA BASIN BIG NINE

FAVORITES

RICHLAND, as one would expect of a program that has won three of the last four Class 4A state titles. KAMIAKIN and HANFORD figure to have strong teams, also, and EASTMONT has perhaps the league’s best returning player in junior shortstop Tygar Garces.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Coach Pete Orgill lost only three seniors from last year’s DAVIS squad which went 7-5 in league play and qualified for district. He includes center-fielder deluxe Jackson Marquis, an all-league second team pick, along with first baseman T.J. Smith, second baseman Marcus McClurkin and third baseman Tim Roddy, all of whom received honorable mention, among his returners. Marquis and McClurkin are juniors. A sophomore, Jens Jensen, will be the Pirates’ cleanup hitter and pitch, play third if Roddy is pitching, or will DH. “This will be one of the best defensive teams we’ve had,” Orgill said. “Our question mark will be pitching. We’ve got four or five guys who can throw, but nobody stands out.” … EISENHOWER, in its first year under former Yakima Beetles head coach Ryan Froula, returns all-league second teamers Will Scott, a senior middle infielder, Seth Kline, a senior catcher, and first baseman Andre Arcand and outfielder Nick Lombardi, both of whom were honorable mention on a team that finished 2-10 and last in the Cascade Division. Others being counted on by the Cadets are outfielder Max Kovatch, pitcher-third baseman Travis Roybal, infielder Trevor Sampson and pitcher-utility man Michael Woodke. “Seth Kline has hit some balls so hard at infielders it’s been scary,” Froula said. “We’re going to hit with teams, it’s just a matter of stopping them from scoring.” … SUNNYSIDE, in its third year under coach Terry Shines, will field a senior-laden squad including pitcher-first baseman Lane Pickel, utility man Justin Reyes, pitcher-corner infielder Jaime Sarmiento, catcher-utility man Travis Jones, outfielder Chance Graff, pitcher Luis Valle, outfielder-pitcher Victor Nunez and catcher Bernald Rodriguez. “We’re still having some growing pains,” said Shines, whose Grizzlies were 0-12 in league last spring. “We have some good freshmen and sophomores coming up, so we’re going to do well in a couple of years, but we might have to take our lumps for the time being.” … Youth will be the order of the day at WEST VALLEY, but that doesn’t mean the Rams are rebuilding. Senior center-fielder-shortstop Garrett Olson and junior pitcher-first baseman Lukas Hinton are the only returning everyday starters, with senior left-hander Konnor Wyckoff having joined Hinton as the one-two mound punch on the Rams’ 18-9 team that finished third in the Class 3A state tournament last year. Seniors Casey Croshaw and Gilbert Plath will play the outfield and third base, respectively, with juniors Steven Wagar (pitcher-outfielder). Eric Dusin, a senior catcher, is also being counted on. “Lukas comes in with the reputation of being our guy,” Wyckoff said, “and he had a great summer with the (Yakima Valley) Pepsi Pak. But Konnor Wyckoff (the coach’s nephew) is pretty darned good, too.”

CWAC

FAVORITES

SELAH and ELLENSBURG, in no particular order. The Vikings have all sorts of history — they’ve been in two of the last three state Class 2A title games — and the Bulldogs have all sorts of talent and experience. They’ll meet April 17 for a doubleheader at Ellensburg. EAST VALLEY and OTHELLO could be considered darkhorses.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

EAST VALLEY returns all-league second-teamers Ryan Schoonover and Jordan Cameron among five starters from a 2009 squad that went 11-7 and finished fifth in the league. Both are seniors and both pitch, while Schoonover also plays shortstop and Cameron sees action at first base and in the outfield. Juniors Jonathan Janis, a catcher and all-league honorable mention recipient, and sophomore Hugo Lemus, an infielder, also started last year, and coach Jesse Benedetti is counting on junior newcomers Daniel Taylor and Conor Palomarez to also contribute. … New coach Todd Gibson not only has seven players who started at one time or another last season at ELLENSBURG, five of them received all-league recognition. Pitcher-shortstop-third baseman Ethan Sterkel and right-fielder-first baseman Michael McNeight made the first team, catcher Tyler Morris was a second-teamer and catcher-pitcher D.J. Smith and infielder Davis Engel received honorable mention. Pitcher-center-fielder Kramer Ferrell is also back. “We finished fourth in league last year (13-5, and reached the first round of state play),” said Gibson, who assisted Jim Klampher. “We hope to improve on that this year.” … GRANDVIEW coach Matt McKinstry has seven returning starters back from a team that was 2-16 in league play last year and hopes to take a step forward in establishing “a program atmosphere.” The Greyhounds will build around seniors K.C. Flores (first base-pitcher), Josue Oros (outfield) and Ryan Moore (third base), who will be a third-year starter. Sophomore Anthony Perez (outfield) also started, and McKinstry hopes freshmen Erik Sauve (pitcher-shortstop) and Derek Swearingen (third base-pitcher) will have an impact. … PROSSER, 7-11 in league a year ago and sixth in the standings, hopes to move up on the strength of five returning starters for coach Kevin Cole. Key among five returning starters are junior T.J. Finn (pitcher-catcher) and senior Tyler Niemeyer (first base), each of who received all-league honorable mention. Seniors Alex Romero (second base) and Trevor Anderson (designated hitter) also started, as did junior Craig Gustafson (shortstop). “We were seventh two years ago and sixth last year,” said Cole. “We’d like to continue to climb the ladder.” … SELAH has won the last three league titles and six of the past seven. So even if league MVP Jake Fife has moved on to Columbia Basin College, the Vikings should once again be formidable under seasoned coach Mike Archer. Senior catcher Matt Snider, who started as a freshman and was an all-league first-teamer last year, is back. And speaking of freshmen, right-fielder Kurt Lindemann, an all-league first team pick as a ninth-grader, returns along with senior Stephan Schmidt and juniors Trent Douglass and Alex and Kyle Fickes. Douglass, Kyle Fickes, Schmidt and sophomore Andrew Gonzalez will handle the pitching. … TOPPENISH has already done something under first-year coach Mark Delp that it hadn’t over the six previous years — it won a league game. “We’re mostly sophomores and freshmen,” said Delp, a 1990 Eisenhower graduate who had been coaching in Springfield, Ore., “but the kids are enthusiastic and are working hard, and that’s a good place to start.” Senior pitcher-third baseman Luis Hernandez was a regular last year, as was sophomore pitcher-shortstop Daniel Maldonado. Twin sophomores John and Josh Piper will often form a pitcher-catcher combination, with John playing shortstop when not on the mound. … WAPATO will build around three seniors who return from the Wolves’ 6-12 league team that reached district play last year, including Mike DeLeon (shortstop-pitcher), Rigo Alvarado (second base-pitcher), Cheo Rodriguez (first base). Juniors Cody Nickoloff (center field) and George Gomez (pitcher-shortstop) and sophomore Josh Dagdagan also return for coach Rhett Pitt, and freshmen Jarret Martin (catcher) and Martin Valdez (second base-left field) could also have an impact.

SCAC WEST

FAVORITES

NACHES VALLEY, GOLDENDALE-KLICKITAT, CLE ELUM and ZILLAH. The Rangers, while losing five first-team all-leaguers from last year’s Class 1A state champions, remain the  team to beat although Goldendale-Klickitat has everyone back from a district tournament team and added an impact player from Klickitat. Cle Elum figures to continue its improvement under second-year coach Steve Schorzman and Zillah will build a round pitching ace Blake Dasso.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

CLE ELUM finished second to NV last spring (7-3 to the Rangers’ 10-0) and returns six starters. First-team all-leaguer Seth Darling (pitcher-third baseman) and second team pick Seth Reynolds (pitcher-shortstop) lead the veterans along with honorable mention selection Roberto Sanchez (center field). All are seniors. Another 12th-grader, Kraygen Craft, will move from the infield to the outfield. “We’ve made some progress,” said  Schorzman. “I’m cautiously optimistic.” … GOLDENDALE-KLICKITAT has everyone back, literally, in the form of nine starters and 16 varsity lettermen. Anchoring the returnees are seniors Aaron Cochran (catcher-third base) and Cody Herin (shortstop-pitcher), both of whom were first-team all-league picks with Cochran being so honored for the third straight year. Plus the Timberwolves have added senior Seth Davis from nearby Klickitat, adding another strong pitching arm plus depth at catcher, third base and shortstop. Another key veteran is senior center-fielder Justin Garrigus, and freshman utility infielder Jacob Denny has shown considerable promise. … GRANGER coach Sam Nishi will build around returning starters Dylan Cruz (outfielder-pitcher), Matt James (pitcher-third baseman) and Brandon Oswalt (pitcher-middle infielder). Cruz is a senior while James and Oswalt are juniors. “It seems like every year’s a rebuilding year for us,” said Nishi. “We’re probably going to be starting three freshmen, so we’re definitely going to be young.” … HIGHLAND has five freshmen among the 11 players in its roster, so new coach Ryan Scott will rely heavily on the likes of senior Joe Perry. The returning all-leaguer will move from the outfield to third base this year. Juniors Garrett Linse, Kavan Stoltenow and William Packard have experience, with Packard earning all-league honorable mention, and sophomores Tanner Christenson and Josiah Mitchum played on the varsity as freshmen. … While NACHES VALLEY lost its fab five, it also returns four starters from the 2009 state champions. Senior J.R. Weigel (shortstop) was a second-team all-league pick and junior Chris Walker (third base) received honorable mention. Also back are juniors Cody Johns (second base) and Aaron Putas, who will move from left field to center. Senior catcher J.D. Ring saw substantial playing time last year when then-senior Adam Ranger  was recovering from a broken wrist. And basketball standout Weston Parker, a 6-foot-5 senior, who hasn’t played since his freshman year, has turned out and might see action at pitcher or in the outfield. … ZILLAH returns pitching ace Blake Dasso, a first-team all-leaguer as a sophomore, and senior second-teamer Trevor Oswalt along with sophomore Trevor Fink, who received honorable mention, from a team that finished third last year (6-4 league) behind Naches Valley and Cle Elum. Sophomores Hunter Curfman and Ricky Cuellar are among others who figure in the Leopards’ plans.

CLASS 2B AND 1B

KITTITAS lost just two seniors from last year’s district tournament team, and coach Merle Watkins includes all-leaguers Spencer Slyfield (pitcher-shortstop), Rilon Fogle (left field) and Tom Studer (catcher) among his returnees. Nate Sorensen (first baseman), Isaac Johnson (first-baseman-pitcher) and Laker Brooks (infielder-pitcher) are also back … LA SALLE includes five all-league picks among its eight returning starters from a 9-0 Mid-Valley League team for coach Mike Moore. Seniors Nick Butterfield (infield-pitcher), Dylan Sattler (catcher) and Ross Anderton are joined by juniors Sam Glazier (pitcher-infield) and Dan Brusic (infield). Boyle and Butterfield will probably be the Lightning’s top pitchers. … Coach Pat Yecha returns senior starters Dylan Davis (pitcher and all-league honorable mention), Keale Wiseman (shortstop) and Dillon Huffman (center field) at LYLE, where the Cougars (4-5 in league last year as Lyle-Wishram) hope to contend for postseason play. “We have eight kids who have never played before,” Yecha said, “so we’re very young and inexprienced.” … Six starters return for coach Phil Pettit at RIVERSIDE CHRISTIAN, led by senior Jason Bjur who batted over .600 in league games last year. Another senior, Steve Stein, is still recovering from a shoulder injury sustained while playing on Ellensburg’s football team last fall, and will be a pitcher and shortstop. Bjur and Stein were first-team all-league. Stein’s younger brother, Mike Stein, earned honorable mention. Plus, the Crusaders (4-5 in league last year) are targeting April 24 as the day they will first compete on their new field, which is located behind the high school. … WHITE SWAN will build around Joshua Pruneda, Curtis Oliva and Caleb Spencer, among others, in an attempt to improve on last year’s 1-8 finish in the Mid-Valley 2B League.

Marathon an Uphill Battle

March 28, 2010 by

Late climb takes its toll once again ||

SELAH, Wash. — Because of its proximity to the Roza Dam, the 11/3-mile grade at Roza Cut that seems to go on forever as it climbs 263 vertical feet more than 22 miles into the Yakima River Canyon Marathon is generally referred to as “the dam hill.”

Most runners would change the spelling of one of those words.

“There’s that one big, hard hill. That one,” said second-place woman Iliana Sach of Bellevue, “is difficult.”

Sean Meissner, right, builds on his lead after passing Gilbert Ondusko shortly before at around the 22 mile mark in the the 10th Yakima River Canyon Marathon Saturday, March 26, 2010 on the uphill section near the Roza Cut. (Andy Sawyer/Yakima Herald-Republic)

That would sound like the understatement of the year to Annie Thiessen, who tore a hamstring while overcoming the hill in the 2007 marathon, came back to win it the next year and, in Saturday’s 10th annual Canyon Marathon, would almost have been willing to hitchhike to get up that, well, dam hill.

“I’m going up that thing thinking what could possibly be worse than this?” the 39-year-old from Tacoma said after topping the women’s field in three hours and 46 seconds. “I thought, you know what, if somebody pulled up and said, ‘Honey, would you like to hop in, leave this hill behind and have a root canal instead?’ I’d have taken it. I’m serious.”

Sean Meissner, on the other hand, greeted his arrival at the base of the hill like an old friend. Meissner, 36, of Sisters, Ore., had been eating away at the big early lead built by Gilbert Ondusko, 41, of Poulsbo, for the latter half of the race. As he neared the bottom of the long, winding hill, the distance between him and Ondusko — once more than a quarter-mile — was down to just a few steps.

And Meissner, an accomplished ultramarathoner, is a hill-climbing beast.

“I couldn’t have planned it any better,” said Meissner, who charged past Ondusko a quarter of the way up the hill, had a 25-yard lead by the top and then turned on the jets over the final 31/2 miles to win in 2:45:14.

Meissner, who has a personal record of 2:39 and runs consistently in the 2:45 range, was widely considered the pre-race favorite, but he wasn’t convinced.

“I knew there’d be someone here that no one knew. There’s always the unknown people,” Meissner said. “When I saw (Ondusko) taking off at the beginning, I thought, ‘He doesn’t look like he’s going to stay out there for long.’ I was kind of surprised he stayed out there in front as long as he did.”

Ondusko, though, was a legitimate threat, the owner of a 2:38 lifetime best and the winner of the 2008 Green River Marathon in 2:43. Still, he was surprised to find himself in the lead and, with his MP3 player blaring in his ears, he didn’t hear Meissner closing in on him on that uphill 23rd mile and was a bit startled to see him blow by.

“He destroyed me on mile 23. He’s just a good runner,” said Ondusko, who tried to keep pace to the top of the hill but lost him quickly after the sweeping left turn onto the downhill stretch. “He was really fast on the hills, and I’m definitely a slow descender, and that was pretty much it.”

Meissner turned his fastest mile of the day — 5:43 — on his first mile of that downhill stretch, and followed that with 6:00 and 5:50 miles. “So I finished up fast,” Meissner said with a grin.

Chris Warren, a 42-year-old from Renton, finished third in 2:52:11, and caught up with Meissner in the finish area, where the two old friends and running rivals compared mental notes.

“You looked strong. I saw you going up the first hill,” Warren told him. “I was laboring compared to Napa (a California marathon in which Warren passed Meissner late in the race). On the last hill, I’m looking around going, where is everybody? I run downhills good, but I run the uphills slow. I figured if they were going to catch me, it’d be on the uphills.”

Jeff Hambleton of Anacortes (2:55:51) and Kenn Clark of Tumwater (2:55:56) rounded out the top five men, while Quinn Plant, 36, of Yakima was the first local finisher in 3:10:38.

Sach, a 32-year-old from Bellevue, finished in 3:09:55 and Lilia Paradis, 27, of Seattle, was third (3:11:25) in the deepest women’s field in the race’s 10-year history. Seven women finished under 3:17, and none of them had more fun than four-time winner Mary Hanna of Maple Valley and Yakima’s Karin Kupp, who ran together for most of the race before finishing fourth (3:13:06) and fifth (3:13:29, a PR for Kupp).

“That was the most enjoyable race ever,” said Kupp, who used Saturday’s race primarily as a long training run for the Boston Marathon in three weeks. “It was totally conversational. There was a bunch of us running along, just all talking together.”

“We had a great time,” Hanna said. “We talked about Boston, other races, family, work, pretty much whatever came up. It was like we were having a cup of coffee together.”

Hanna and Kupp, though, are experienced distance mavens. First-time marathoner Oswaldo Plascencia, a 27-year-old from Yakima, had no idea how his body would react to the 26-mile, 385-yard distance. Those first few miles, he felt way too good.

“I started too fast,” said Plascencia, who had run half-marathons before but only occasionally ran anything longer than that in training. “At the beginning, I was thinking, ‘This is really easy, I can go for miles like this.’ I started too fast.

“Then, by mile 16, I didn’t have any energy left. My legs were tired and sore. I actually started walking some. People were giving me advice when they passed me, encouragement, telling me, ‘Don’t worry, there’s no shame in walking, I have to walk sometimes, too.’ They were all really nice people. You don’t get that in a lot of other sports. Everybody’s just really nice.”

Even with his walking at the rough spots, Plascencia broke the four-hour barrier, finishing in 3:55:10. And he finished with a smile.

So, too, did 30-year-old Katy Binder of North Bend, who still had such a hop in her step that she jumped up to swat one of the 10 race T-shirts — emblematic of each of the 10 Yakima River Canyon Marathons — that were draped above the final stretch leading to the finish chute.

Amazing what having 26 miles of pavement — and that big ol’ dam hill — behind you will do for a person’s attitude.
