Wanderscheid stays on course

Goldendale golfer back to defend 1A title ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — With all that Zach Wanderscheid has accomplished in the past year, he certainly could’ve taken a step back and simply enjoyed his final months of high school.

Not a chance.

The Goldendale golfer has every intention of defending his Class 1A state championship later this spring, even as he continues competing in junior golf events in the northwest.

Goldendale’s Zach Wanderscheid tees off during a qualifying tournament for the U.S. Open last June at Suncadia’s Tumble Creek course. (Gordon King/Yakima Herald-Republic file)

“He’s not going to cut back. He’s going to keep a full schedule,” Goldendale coach Dick Patzer said. “He’s been loyal to our team.”

Although Wanderscheid has yet to tee it up in a prep event this spring — he missed Friday’s Lee Dolquist Invitational at Apple Tree because he was attending freshmen orientation at the University of Idaho, where he’ll go this fall — he’s been quite busy.

And, not surprisingly, successful too.

Earlier this month, he captured the Tri-Cities Junior Open at Canyon Lakes and Sun Willows, besting SCAC rival Minwoo Park of Highland by one stroke.

In February, he tied Apple Tree’s course record with a round of 63.

That just continues a run of success in the past year in which Wanderscheid, in addition to winning the state 1A championship, tied for top honors at a U.S. Open sub-sectional qualifier, qualified for and competed in the U.S. Junior Amateur, won the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Junior Amateur title, and the Oregon Junior Championship. Those efforts earned top junior golfer honors from both the PNGA and the Washington State Golf Association.

Having worked with Wanderscheid the past three seasons, Patzer said it’s easy to understand why the golfer has enjoyed such a high level of success.

“Zach seems to have kept his fires burning to compete in golf,” Patzer said. “He’s still hungry to compete, and he wants to keep practicing and working on his game.”

As Wanderscheid enters his senior season, Patzer sees a golfer who has improved in all facets of the game.

“With his physical maturity, he’s stronger and hitting the ball farther,” Patzer said. “He and I have also talked about mechanics and touch around the greens, and he’s really improved on that.”

Now, as he prepares for a final spring, the competitive fire and diligent work ethic will serve Wanderscheid well as he seeks a championship repeat, Patzer said.

“It will not be a cakewalk at state. There’s really good golfers at state,” Patzer said. “But I don’t see him slowing down at all.”

Considering that Wanderscheid won last year’s 1A title after shooting brilliant back-to-back rounds of 4-under par 68, that should be fair warning that he won’t easily relinquish his crown.

Talent abounds on Valley links

March 28, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Zach Wanderscheid has established himself at the top prep golfer in the Yakima Valley, but the Goldendale senior is by no means the only one capable of a strong state showing this spring.

Three players in particular, Wanderscheid’s SCAC rival Minoo Park from Highland, and West Valley’s Eric Gravbrot and Kameron Lamb, have the potential to improve on their state finishes from last season.

Gravbrot, a junior, finished 15th in the 2009 Class 3A state tournament after identical rounds of 75 for 150 total. Lamb, a senior, had back-to-back rounds of 78 to finish 28th.

Park, who beat Wanderscheid for the SCAC District title last spring, also shot two rounds in the 70s (77-78) to finish 25th in the 1A state tournament.

In the CWAC, a handful of players are more than capable of shooting in the 70s on a consistent basis — East Valley’s Tyler Jensen, Ellensburg’s Carl Bender, the Prosser duo of Chad Hancock and Devin Bender, and Wapato’s Greg Klutts, all of whom qualified for 2A state last season.

La Salle’s Mike Stiekema is yet another top-10 state contender after finishing eighth with a 150 total (72-78) in last spring’s Class B event at the par-65 Tri-City Country Club.

3/28/10 Prep Track and Field Roundup

March 28, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Freshman Lindsay Burns spent a long day at Zaepfel Stadium on Saturday, and that was a good thing for West Valley’s girls track and field team.

Making her debut season even more impressive, Burns won the long jump, placed second in the 400-meter dash and ran on two runner-up relays to help the Rams win the 36th annual Don Holder Relays.

Burns improved her season bests to 17-11/2 in the long jump and 58.20 in the 400 during the 24-team meet. Junior Chantel Jaeger, who won the 100, joined Burns on the second-place 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

West Valley’s 4×400 clocked a swift 4:02.42, which would have been a meet record by four seconds had Woodinville not won the event in 4:01.18.

The Rams tallied 60 points for the team victory with Eisenhower and Glacier Peak tying for second with 52.

Ike’s Jessica Bush won the shot and was second in the discus, and the Cadets also got a win from their 4×100.

Eisenhower finished second in the boys meet behind Jackson. Leading the Cadets’ effort was a meet-record setting distance medley of Bryan Simison, Grey Peone, German Silva and Timothy Cummings.

Local winners in the boys meet included Sunnyside’s Elias Medrano (400), Kittitas’ Paul Oursland (javelin) and Davis’ Marcus Schooley (pole vault).
