Central falls twice in tournament

March 28, 2010 by

TURLOCK, Calif. — Central Washington followed up its 3-0 start in the Tournament of Champions on Saturday with two losses at Cal State Stanislaus.

The Wildcats fell 1-0 to the University of California San Diego, then dropped a 10-4 decision to Cal State San Bernardino.

Though the Wildcats slipped to 16-7, they’ll advance to the gold bracket quarterfinals where they will meet Chico State (17-12) at 11:30 a.m. today.

Bracket play is single-elimination, and CWU would need to win three consecutive games to claim the tournament championship.

An unearned run on a pinch-hit single with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning ended a pitcher’s duel between Central’s Lauren Hadenfeld and UCSD ace Camille Gaito.

Hadenfeld allowed just five hits and struck out seven, but saw her scoreless-inning streak of 261/3 innings end on Nikki Spangler’s pinch-hit single won the game for the Tritons.

CSU San Bernardino then rolled up 11 hits against four Central pitchers and erased a 4-0 Wildcats lead.

Central’s Danielle Monson was 3-for-3, extending her hitting streak to a GNAC record 22 games.

Mavericks shut down Hermiston

March 28, 2010 by

HERMISTON, Ore. — A fast start, and a big effort by Brandon Tate against his former team helped the Yakima Mavericks remain undefeated.

Yakima scored three first-quarter touchdowns, and Tate ran for 110 yards as the Mavericks turned back the Hermiston Hurricanes 27-14 on Saturday evening.

John Lobbestael was pressed back into quarterback service with new starter Jordan Slesk unable to make the trip, and last year’s starting signal caller responded by throwing for 130 yards and two touchdowns, while running for a third score.

Lobbestael hit Alex Mahre on a 16-yard pass to open the scoring, and capped the big first quarter with a 19-yard scoring toss to Heath Reeves.

Inbetween, Tate scored on a 1-yard run.

Lobbestael added a 1-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

Yakima’s defense was solid against their league rivals, who were called the Blue Mountain Stars last season, led by Jeremy Franck, who had two interceptions.

Former Sunnyside High running back R.J. Elizondo scored on a 41-yard run for Hermiston.

Next Saturday, Yakima (2-0) will face the South Sound Shockers in Lacey

Prep tennis–Ellensburg boys serve up title quest

All four players back from Class 2A state runner-up team//

YAKIMA — Two seasons ago, Ellensburg tennis coach Mark Morrill guided the Bulldogs girls team to a second-place in the Class 2A state tournament.

A few days later, a good chunk of the team graduated.

Ellensburg's Josiah Jackson, who finished fourth in singles in the Class 2A state tournament last spring, is one of four Bulldogs returning to a team that finished second to Sehome.//GORDON KING/Yakima Herald-Republic file

Last year it was Ellensburg’s boys team that was the state runner-up.

Only this time around, tennis whites weren’t traded in for caps and gowns.

All four of last year’s Bulldog state qualifiers — Josiah Jackson and Aaron Porter in singles play, and the doubles pairing of Bryan Elliott and Mike Komorowski — return this season.

“It makes my life easier,” Morrill said.

As well as the pursuit of defending state champion Sehome, which topped Ellensburg by 10 points in Vancouver last year.

The Mariners qualified two doubles teams and a singles player to state. All three entries medalled.

Meanwhile, just Jackson trophied for the Bulldogs, ousting Porter to advance to the medal round. The two played three times in the postseason, with Jackson winning twice.

“I like having the two kids at the top; there’s a lot more self motivation involved,” Morrill said.

Elliott, a senior, and Komorowski, a junior, also finished a match away from the medal last season.

While Alexis Filliol — a state champion as a freshman and sixth last year — returns for her senior season at West Valley, it’s the Rams boys that figure to be in the hunt for team hardware.

Senior Jeff Carlson and the junior duo of Cooper Anderson and Daniel Wenker return after qualifying for state for WV, which tied for 10th.

Added to the mix is freshman Aaron Farmer, who is an accomplished club player.

Farmer was third in No. 1 singles at the Coke Classic earlier this month in Yakima, losing only to ’09 state doubles qualifier Taylor Hunt of defending 3A champion Seattle Prep. The Panthers edged the Rams by two for the team title.

“He has the ability to push our (older) players,” said first-year Rams boys coach Tyson Whitfield, who took over the program after a couple season as the junior varsity coach.

The bulk of talent has helped Whitfield ease into the job and provided plenty of competition during practices and matches — even when the Rams are taking on someone else.

“They are competitive during the matches, who can give up the fewest games and who can get off the court the quickest,” Whitfield said.

Record field for Yakima Canyon Marathon

March 27, 2010 by

The Yakima Canyon Road (State Route 821) will be closed to motorized traffic (except recreationists and canyon residents with special passes) between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. today to accommodate a record amount of foot traffic.

Today’s Yakima River Canyon Marathon is expected to draw more than 600 participants, which would be the most in the race’s 10-year history, with 100 as first-time marathoners, another race record.

The race will begin at 8 a.m. on the Canyon Road about a quarter-mile south of its intersection with Berry Road, and — although the marathon finishes in Selah — runners will actually start out by going north. They’ll turn right on Berry Road, pass the Days Inn and wind around and back to the Canyon Road, which they will follow to the finish line near the southern mouth of the canyon.

Former champions running in the race include Manuh Santos of Yakima (2006, 2007), Mary Hanna (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009) and Annie Thiessen (2008). Many of the participants will also be running three weeks later at the famed Boston Marathon, renowned for its “Heartbreak Hill” — which, when compared to the Yakima course’s major hills at the 14- and 21-mile marks, are veritable molehills, say runners who have done both races.

“The hills in the canyon are tougher than Boston’s ‘Heartbreak Hill’ — by a bunch,”  said Chris Warren of Renton, one of the contenders to win the 2010 Yakima River Canyon Marathon.

“What gets you at Boston is there’s a lot of rolling downhills early in the race, so when you do get the hills you don’t have a lot left in your legs. I would consider Yakima a faster course than Boston, except for the two hills.”

Prep baseball, fastpitch — Rams rally to finish baseball sweep

March 27, 2010 by

YAKIMA — Klayton Wyckoff has witnessed some impressive wins during his baseball coaching tenure at West Valley, which is now in its ninth year, but few if any surpassed what happened on the Rams’ field Friday.

After rallying from a four-run first-game deficit to beat Kamiakin 13-8, West Valley came from eight down in the second contest for a 10-9 victory and a sweep of the highly regarded Braves in CBBN play.

“I don’t know,” Wyckoff said, “if I’ve ever been a part of something … so unreal. We’re down 8-0, things aren’t going well and we’re about as down as we can be. But we kept telling the kids to keep going, there’s a lot of game left.

“In the third inning we made a pitching change, bringing Tyler Ueltsche in and he was lights out for four innings.”

West Valley (4-1 overall) got the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh when Tyler Gallaway doubled, took third on an infield out and scored when Gil Plath singled to left on a 3-2 pitch.

The hit capped a big day for Plath, who was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI in the first game and 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI in the second.
