Local report–YVCC baseball sweeps Wenatchee

April 8, 2010 by

WENATCHEE — If you’re trying to rebuild a college baseball program, starting pitching is a good place to start. And Yakima Valley, in its first season under coach Ken Wilson, seems headed in the right direction — in that regard and otherwise.

With Steven Schoonover and Derek Welton authoring dominant mound performances, the Yaks swept Wenatchee in Eastern Region play, 6-0 and 7-1 on Wednesday at Paul Thomas Stadium.

Schoonover, a freshman left-hander from Olympia, threw a complete-game four-hitter in the opener while Welton, a freshman righty from Selah, went eight strong innings in the nightcap.

The sweep improved YVCC to 4-2 in region play and 16-7 overall. Wenatchee Valley fell to 1-5 and 4-1 5.

Schoonover struck out two and walked none in the first game and Konrad Mueller snapped a 0-0 tie with a two-run triple to highlight the Yaks’ four-run seventh.

Trevor Dallman added a two-run single in the eighth and had three RBI for the game.

Tyler Berman drove in two runs in the second as YVCC again ended a scoreless deadlock in the seventh. Berman’s RBI increased his season to total to 24, which ranks among the NWAACC leaders.

Welton struck out three and walked three before Morgan Heiman worked a scoreless ninth.
