GOLF
Seniors event set for May 14-15
The third-annual Yakima Seniors Invitational golf tournament has been scheduled for May 14-15.
The 36-hole event, open to golfers 50 and older with established handicaps, will feture 18 holes at Mount Adams Country Club in Toppenish with the second round to be played at SunTides Golf Course.
Entry fee is $70 with proceeds going to the First Tee of Yakima. Forms are available at all local pro shops with an entry deadline of May 8.
The first two tournaments drew more than 100 golfers each, and organizers are hoping for a turnout of that size or larger. Flights will be determined by age.
Among those already entered are past champions Troy Wilmoth and Bill Adkison. Adkison defeated Wilmoth and Joel Elder in a playoff for last year’s title.
PREPS
WIAA approves running clock
A running game clock for the second half of 40-point basketball games was one of five amendments that were approved by the WIAA’s Representative Assembly at its annual spring meeting on Friday in Renton.
Starting with the 2010-2011 season, once a game reaches a 40-point differential, the game clock will run continuously for the remainder of the game. This excludes timeouts, the quarter break and free throws.
The amendment passed 43-10.
Other notable amendments that passed involved bowling (five Baker games are the same as one regular game) and football (freshmen who play in three quarters or less may play a fifth quarter).
A proposal to sanction girls lacrosse as a WIAA sport failed 44-8 while the same proposal for boys lacrosse did not reach the floor and was not voted on.
An amendment to reclassify from six to five classifications failed 33-2.
