Welton tosses no-no for Yaks

YVCC earns split behind righty’s dominant outing ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — The stellar season for Yakima Valley Community College pitcher Derek Welton continued Wednesday afternoon at Parker Field.

Oh, did it.

The Selah High grad-uate tossed a no-hitter as the Yaks defeated Blue Mount-ain 4-0 in the second game of a NWAACC Eastern Region doubleheader. The Timberwolves outslugged YVCC in the opener 14-9.

Welton, who improved to 7-0 this season, struck out 11 batters and walked just two. No BMCC runner got past second base against the right-hander.

“He’s been pretty much money for us — you couldn’t script it any better,” Yaks assistant coach Marcus McKimmey said of Welton, who didn’t play baseball last season.

Jacob Mann doubled and had two of YVCC’s five hits. The Yaks scored a pair of runs in the second inning and added two in the seventh.

In the opener, the Timberwolves jumped on YVCC with five runs in the top of the first inning.

The Yaks trimmed the lead to a run in the bottom of the fifth before BMCC tacked on four more in top half of the sixth for a 11-6 lead.

Mann had four hits in the opener while Roeman Fields was 3-for-3 with two runs for YVCC. The Yaks also got a pair of hits from Tyler Berman and Dusty Kranz.

Yakima Valley is 26-9 overall and 14-4 in conference. The second-place Yaks travel to Ontario, Ore., on Saturday for a noon doubleheader against Treasure Valley, which is in three games behind YVCC in the Eastern Region standings.

Golf: Senior Moments

April 29, 2010 by

Wilmoth, Adkison reveling in newer event for older golfers ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — If you were Troy Wilmoth or Bill Adkison back in the day, you did what they did.

You took part in the athletic endeavors of most high school males, meaning football, basketball or baseball. And for these two, it meant all three.

Once Wilmoth graduated from Highland in 1961, he continued his competitive pursuits in the form of semi-pro baseball. For Adkison, known as Bill Harlan as part of Selah’s class of ’67, there was baseball at Yakima Valley College and then Central Washington, with a stint in the San Francisco Giants farm system to follow.

And when those days were done, Adkison joined many of his hardball contemporaries on the fastpitch diamond.

Still, when he hung the spikes up for good, Adkison was a relatively young man whose desire to vie athletically was not nearly exhausted. So he reverted to his competitive youth.

“I started playing golf when I was young, 11 or so, and I played as much as I could back then,” Adkison said. “I played quite a bit off and on until I was about 18, then I was finishing school and playing baseball and didn’t play much for probably 25 years. But there was still golf, and that was something I felt I could do.”

And do well enough to lower his handicap to single digits, and well enough at age 59 to have won the Yakima Seniors Invitational — something Wilmoth did the previous year at 66.

The third installment of this event has been scheduled for May 14-15 at Mount Adams and SunTides, respectively, and organizers are wondering who the next Wilmoth or Adkison will be.

Not that either should be confused with Fred Couples, who has torched the Champions Tour since turning 50 last Oct. 3.

But given that neither local has won the Yakima Amateur Invitational, they could have been considered the Valley’s versions of Tom Kite (pre-1992 U.S. Open) or Phil Mickelson (pre-2004 Masters) as the best to have not won a major.

“I was in the last group a couple of times,” recalled Adkison, whose father, Wayne, won the City in 1952. “That was probably my best scenario, finishing second, third or fourth.”

Wilmoth could relate. He’s finished second six times.

And none of his near misses was more disheartening than the 2001 edition, which on Sunday’s final round saw Wilmoth step to the 15th tee at the Yakima Elks course with a three-shot lead.

“I was trying to play smart and safe,” he said recently, “and hit a 3-iron off the tee. I blocked it dead right and hit it out of bounds.”

Benefiting from the then-58-year-old’s largesse was then-20-year-old Souta Nozaka, who beat Wilmoth with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

“I’d been hitting the driver great, too,” Wilmoth said, “so I have no idea why I hit that 3-iron.”

Ah, but now we — Wilmoth, Adkison and many other oldsters of note — have the Seniors Invitational. Meaning the large number of 50-and-older golfers in and around the Valley have an event in which they can continue to compare their considerable shotmaking skills.

“It’s a great idea,” Adkison said. “There are a lot of players around here who over 50 who can play some pretty good golf. There are even guys over 60 who can play and play well.”

Including the first two champions. Adkison said his handicap varies between 0 and 2. Wilmoth plays to a 1.

“It’s always great to win,” said Wilmoth, who followed up his 2008 Seniors win by qualifying for a playoff with Adkison and Joel Elder. “To win a tournament you need some good things to happen — to make a long putt or to get up and down when you have no business doing so.”

But most of all you need to compete, and that’s something so many local seniors do, even if they don’t drive it as long as they once did.

“I’ve always been competitive,” Adkison said. “Growing up it’s something you develop, or maybe you acquire from things you have to go through.

“Now, as a golfer, maybe you don’t hit it as far, but you can compensate for that by playing a little smarter or by managing your game a little better.”

And if you compete well enough, smart enough and get some of those oh-so-precious breaks, you can play in the final group at SunTides.
