Rangers’ quick start in first game sparks sweep of Goldendale ||

NACHES, Wash. — In a doubleheader that lasted over four hours, Naches Valley’s baseball team made its biggest statement in the opening minutes.

Scoring all four of their runs in the first inning, the fifth-ranked Rangers defeated No. 2 Goldendale 4-0 and then completed the sweep with a 9-6 win in their SCAC West showdown Tuesday at Ranger Field.

Cody Johns pitched a four-hit shutout in the opener, and J.R. Weigel’s two-run homer keyed a five-run fourth inning as Naches Valley pushed its records to 8-0 in the West and 14-2 overall.

The Rangers can wrap up a fourth straight unbeaten season in the SCAC West on Friday at Granger.

“We’re a different team than last year and we’re still putting the pieces together,” said NV coach Bill Walker. “We haven’t had the same starting lineup two games in a row, but today helped solidify some things. The kids played tough all day.”

The Rangers have been perfect in league play since leaving the CWAC for the SCAC in 2007, with Tuesday’s sweep extending the Rangers’ SCAC winning streak to 44 games.

Naches Valley started that run by going 14-0 in ’07, followed by a 12-0 mark in ’08, and a 10-0 league record last season.

Johns struck out four and was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI in the opener. Carson Kass delivered the big hit — a two-run single — in NV’s four-run opening frame.

After that, Goldendale starter Trevor Fields held the Rangers to two hits.

In the second game, the Timberwolves (6-2, 14-2) built a 6-2 lead with the help of Lucas Denney’s solo homer and Fields’ 3-for-4 day.

But the Rangers got it back and more in the bottom of the fourth. J.D. Ring’s two-run single started the rally and Weigel clout put NV up for good. Weigel finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Goldendale also has one conference doubleheader remaining — at home against Granger next Tuesday.

With the top two seeds from the West, Naches Valley and Goldendale would host first-round games in the eight-team district tournament on May 11.

Springer numbers pick up at Prosser

April 27, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — The season count of spring chinook through the Prosser Dam more than doubled over one three-day period as the countdown to Saturday’s opening of the Yakima River fishery on the coveted springers got down to the final days of waiting.

A total of 85 chinook had moved through Prosser as of last Thursday, but then 19 were counted on Friday, 26 on Saturday and 43 on Sunday — 88 over three days.

And if you’re already salivating over the thought of tasting some freshly-caught springers, you just can’t wait until the weekend and you’re not inclined to catch your own down at someplace like Drano, the Wind or the Klickitat, the year’s first commercial tribal season began this morning and runs through 6 p.m. Thursday. Fresh harvest from those tribal fishers from the Yakama Nation, Warm Springs, Umatilla and Nez Perce tribes can be purchased — cash only — at Lone Pine (The Dalles), Marine Park (Cascade Locks) and the boat launch near Roosevelt. Price is determined at the point of sale.

You can check out the latest on tribal harvest and sales sites online or call the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission’s marketing program at 888-289-1855.

Of the just over 100,000 springers that have gone through Bonneville, nearly a third (31,039) were past McNary by Monday afternoon.
