Track: Davis vaulters go 2-3
May 30, 2010 by Scott Spruill
TACOMA, Wash. — On Friday they waited around for hours only to have their event postponed and then finally rained out. They returned on Saturday and waited some more.
It was a marathon of patience for Marcus Schooley and Michael Martinez at the Class 4A state track and field championships, but when the Davis pole vaulters finally got the green light they were better than ever.
Schooley skied over 15 feet for the first time, becoming only the second Yakima-area vaulter to do so, and Martinez topped a career best of 14-3 as the teammates finished second and third, respectively, in a 4A event that concluded over 24 hours later than intended.
Schooley and Martinez shared that-would-be-cool-dude thoughts about a 1-2 finish, but Woodinville senior Curtis Flolid broke his school record to win it at 15-3.
“We hoped to sweep it, but Curtis jumped awesome and we all got our PRs,” Schooley said. “It was a great competition.”
Schooley had a scare at 14-6, clearing on his final attempt, then equaled his previous best of 14-9 on his second try. To break a new barrier, the junior had to use a bigger, heavier pole for the first time in competition and after one try “to just get the feel for it” Schooley cleared 15-0.
“I used this pole just once in practice, so that first attempt was just like scoping it out,” he said. “It’s a lot different when you move up like that, but I felt good and felt like I could control it.”
Martinez, a senior, also topped his lifetime best on his second try.
“When I got 14-3 I knew I was at least third and that’s cool,” he said. “I’ve been vaulting four years and to finish here vaulting well is the best.”
Outlasting Friday’s rain, which forced three vaulting events to be postponed and two to be contested Saturday at Pacific Lutheran, was an experience in idle nerves.
“We were bored and getting a little nervous,” Martinez said. “Friday we didn’t do anything all day and that was weird. We were kind of on hold all day and then told we wouldn’t jump at all.”
“I was pumped to jump Friday and there was time in the late afternoon when it didn’t rain,” Schooley added. “I got tired of watching everybody else, but it all worked out. When we finally got to jump the conditions were probably the best they could be even with a little wind.”
Next year as a senior, Schooley will take aim at James Gardner’s 1995 school record of 15-1 1/2.
Eisenhower sophomore Mayra Chavez also picked up a placing medal on Saturday, finishing seventh in the 1,600 with a season-best time of 5 minutes, 5.01 seconds.
CLASS 2A
Torres second in 800
TACOMA — Wapato’s Eduardo Torres and Ellensburg’s Sungyoung Lee liked the taste of being here a year ago but were not at all satisfied.
On Saturday they feasted.
Torres, a senior, placed second in the 800 with his third straight career-best time while Lee, a junior, was a double sprint placer after finishing third in the 100 and sixth in the 200. Last year both qualified for state but did not make it out of the prelims.
“Since I was a sophomore I wanted to race in the state finals,” said Torres, who dropped his career best to 1:55.48 and was just .56 behind winner Andy Robertson of Chehalis. “I thought I had a shot at it but Robertson had a nice kick. The time though — a 1:55 — I’ll take that.”
Bucking a stiff headwind in the 100 final, Lee was an arm’s length from the win finishing .08 behind Trent Alsin of Black Hills and .01 behind WSU football recruit Blair Bomber of Lynden. A far cry from last year.
“This was kind of redemption for me because last year didn’t go well,” he said. “I had a hip flexor problem and couldn’t do much. I was done in a hurry. So to come here this time and be right in it, I’m proud of that.”
Toppenish’s Angie Zuniga had by far the busiest day of the local CWAC athletes. The sophomore sprinter competed in four finals on Saturday, anchoring the Wildcats to third place in the 4×100 and 4×200 and placing fifth in the 100 and 200.
“I added it up and it’s 1,200 meters of sprinting. I’m tired!,” she said with an exhausted smile after the 200. “The best thing was the 400 relay. We wanted a school record today and we got it.”
Lucia Walle, Sabrina Galaviz, Sarah Guel and Zuniga clocked 50.03 in the 4×100 to get their coveted record, and Walle, Guel, Zuniga and Ariana Saavedra teammed on the 4×200 to run 1:47.28.
Zuniga equaled her state place in the 100 from last year and improved two spots in the 200.
“It was a lot of racing and I kept telling myself to be mentally tough,” she said. “Last year we didn’t make the finals in the relays so this was so much better. It was worth all the work.”
Track: RC seals the deal for title
May 30, 2010 by Frank Purdy
CHENEY, Wash. — With two events to go, Riverside Christian’s boys sat in third place in the Class 2B state track and field meet, three points out of first and two points out of second.
Fortunately for the Crusaders, they were the right two events.
Derek Byrne and Kyle Gartrell took second and fourth respectively in the long jump, and the 4×400 relay held off a competitive field to hand the Crusaders their second straight state championship Saturday at Eastern Washington University.

“That was a great two days,” summed up coach Scott Wells.
Also having a productive Saturday was Lyle-Wishram’s Cody Carlsen, who won the Class 2B 400 and placed second in the 100 and 200. As one can imagine, the 400 is his favorite of the three.
“I basically sprint the 400,” he said after recording a winning time of 50.27 — he has been in the 49s. “At the curve I give it everything.” He held off the field in the final 100 meters into steady headwind on a cool and cloudy day.
But the top team honors went to Riverside Christian and a pleased coach Wells. “I worked these guys,” he said. “I put the pressure on them and they responded.”
The foursome of Kent Gartrell, Nate VanTuinen, Derek Byrne and Delwin Bazilme also sped to victory in the 4×100.
Adding key points were Kent Gartrell, third in the 200 at 24.12 and eighth in the 100 at 12.58, and Kyle Gartrell’s fourth place in the pole vault, 12-0,
Saturday’s titles added to two victories in Friday’s session: Byrne in the javelin and Kyle Gartrell in the triple jump.
In the 4×100 relay, the Crusaders’ speed and historically smooth handoffs moved the baton to a winning time of 44.21 as Byrne, running the second leg, powered into the lead.
“I just tried to push it to give Nate a good lead. I knew he could hold it,’ Byrne said.
VanTuinen more than held it and Gartrell, the anchor, had a clear lead when he got the baton and stepped into a brisk headwind. “I’m listening for footsteps. I feel like I hear them, but I know I don’t.”
Same foursome, different order and an laser focus in the winning 4×400, as the relay wanted to seal the championship deal.
“That was the most intense; I love it,” said VanTuinen, though the competition wouldn’t agree. Gartrell, VanTuinen, Byrne and Bazilme held a slight but steady lead to win in 3:30:2 and secure their repeat championship.
Last year’s team was led by the sprinting and hurdling heroics of Wells’ son, Dana, now at Washington State University. Going into this season, a repeat state title appeared to be an overwhelming challege, but only for a while.
“It didn’t take long to realize that these guys were state caliber,” coach Wells said. “Not winning never crossed their minds.”
The athletes, for their part, send the credit back to their coach. “Every time we’re down as a team, he builds us up,” said Bazilme. “He will tell you when you were bad, but he won’t make you feel bad.”
And with top two finishes the past four years, the athletes also talk about having established a tradition.
Said Kent Gartrell, a senior along with Bazilme, “It’s time to pass it on.”
CLASS 1B: Trout Lake-Glenwood, coming off a strong Friday, stitched together points in several running events to take fourth place and a team trophy.
Alec England took fourth in the 800 (2:08:36), Chase England likewise placed fourth in the 3200 (10:52.11), Lucas King grabbed fifth in the 200 and seventh in the 400, and the 4×400 relay team placed fifth.
CLASS 1A: Zillah’s Logan Olney took second in the 100 and 200 and led the Leopards’ 4×100 team to a 44.73 finish, good for fifth.
In the 100, Olney put on a charge at the finish a recorded a time of 11.72 into a brisk headwind. It was a similar story in the 200 — “I have a pretty bad curve, then I pick it up in the last 120 meters” — as he finished in 23.13.
Track: TL-G girls just miss repeat
May 30, 2010 by Frank Purdy
CHENEY, Wash. — The faces have changed, but the places were mighty familiar for Trout Lake-Glenwood’s girls.
Their historically strong relays brought home gold in the 4×100 and 4×400, 300 hurdler Liz Vogt and pole vaulter Mckenzie Zoller took first-place medals, and the team almost pulled off a repeat Class 1B track and field championship. They ended up second with 104 points, four points shy of Mount Rainier Lutheran, and wound up in second.
La Salle, led by a winning 4×200 relay and pole vaulter Colleen Newell, just missed a Class 2B trophy, placing fifth with 41 points, five points out of fourth.
Also taking first in Saturday’s finals at Eastern Washington University was Samantha Brewer, who left the field behind in the Class 1B 100 hurdles.
In 2009, Trout Lake-Glenwood’s senior-laden squad raced away from everyone with 125 points. Back from that team were the junior Vogt and senior Zoller.
Vogt won the 300 hurdles, took second in the long jump and led off the winning 4×400 relay team. Zoller defended her championship in the pole vault and vaulted the 4×100 relay, consisting of Anna Nakae, Amanda Zoller, Mckenzie Zoller and Katie Yarnell, into a lead they never relinquished.
“I passed two people on the curve, and Katie held the lead,” said McKenzie Zoller. “That’s my job,” responded Yarnell. They won in 53.76 seconds. Zoller’s winning pole vault cleared 9 feet even.
On the track, Vogt pulled away from Jamie Bruno of Pateros on the curve to win going away in 47.73. In the long jump it, she cleared 15-7 1/4, good for the runner-up spot.
Vogt also led off the winning 4×400 relay, by which time the team members knew they were in the mix for a title. “That was on all of our minds,” she said. The team of Vogt, Amy Underwood and the two Zollers won in 4:21.81. But Mount Rainier Lutheran grabbed second in the relay and earned the first-place team title.
Missing a 400 victory by .20 seconds was TL-G’s Katie Yarnell, whose second-place 1:01:50 was a personal best by almost four seconds.
All these points went on top of Vogt’s triple jump title Friday.
“The girls all stepped up today,” said coach Morgan Colburn.
Klickitat’s Brewer, a junior, stepped up and stepped out to an impressive time of 16.97 in 100 hurdles, a victory by more than a second into a strong headwind. “I felt good,” she said while acknowledging the weather conditions. “I had a hard time three-stepping between the hurdles.”
The race interrupted her long jump, where she eventually placed third with 15-71?4, the same mark as Vogt’s, who was awarded the higher position based on her second longest jump.
Brewer’s Klickitat teammate, senior Zoe Lindner, placed second in the javelin with a throw of 120-3. That was an improvement from 2009, when she took third with 105-9.
CLASS 2B: The 4×200 highlighted a strong showing by the Lightning relay squads in Saturday’s finals.
Julia Riel, Savannah Bonny, Regine Standley and anchor Alicia Ashby recorded a winning time of 1:49.00 to back up their top-qualifying position.
Standley, a sophomore, said she “felt a bolt of energy” as she pulled into the lead. Out in front, Ashby said, “I closed my eyes and ran. I didn’t want anyone to pass me.”
The relay squad improved from a fourth-place finish last year. “I’m really proud of our team,” said Riel, a senior along with Ashby.
The 4×100 team of Riel, Bonny, Jaryl Pence and Ashby gave Colfax a good run but settled for second in 52.01.
La Salle’s other gold medal came from junior Colleen Newell in the pole vault. A sixth-place finisher last year at 8-6, she upped that by one foot and five places.
Ashby took sixth in 100 and 200, and Standley tied for fifth in the high jump.
The Lighting rounded out its scoring with a sixth in the 4×400 relay, composed of Riel, Newell, Siena Noe and Allie McGree. Their time was 4:25:29.
CLASS 1A: Naches Valley’s Justine Benner placed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.73 to go with Friday’s sixth-place finish in the long jump (16-3). Her Ranger teammate, Kelly Snyder, took sixth Saturday in the triple jump in 33-8.

Baseball: Errors catch up with Vikings
May 30, 2010 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — In time, things will change.
Selah’s players, coaches and fans will focus more on an exemplary season and less on the way it ended Saturday at Yakima County Stadium.
Fondly recalled will be the Vikings’ 21-5 record and a 10-game winning streak that included a memorable victory over Ellensburg for the CWAC district championship.
Smiles will result from thoughts of the program’s third Class 2A final four in four years and sixth since 2000. And coach Mike Archer will always remember catcher Matt Snider and first baseman-pitcher Stephan Schmidt, standouts among the four seniors on his roster.

“Both of those kids,” he said with visible emotion, “had great careers as Vikings.”
Neither went out as desired, however, with eight unearned runs leading to an 11-6 loss to Archbishop Murphy that relegated Selah to fourth place.
The Everett-based Wildcats (22-4) finished third.
“We played good ball for five innings,” Archer said, “but that obviously wasn’t enough.”
Not with two errors marring a seven-run Murphy sixth inning that obliterated a 5-4 Viks lead.
To that point, Selah had overcome two prior indiscretions that had left only half of the Wildcats’ tallies off starter Kyle Fickes earned.
An unearned Murphy run in the second was neutralized by Trent Douglass’ third-inning triple and Alex Fickes’ run-scoring fielder’s choice.
The Vikings then benefited from some Wildcats’ largesse, with two errors aiding a four-run Selah fourth. Douglass’ RBI triple — the junior shortstop finished 3-for-3 — and RBI sacrifices by Snider and Allen Noble highlighted the frame.
But Selah wouldn’t score again until the seventh via sophomore Kurt Lindemann’s solo homer.
Capitalizing on the Vikings’ miscues were Matt Huggins, who doubled home two runs in the fourth, and Keanen Albright, whose two-bagger scored two more in the sixth.
Murphy’s Jacob Oster was 3-for-3 and Connor Huesers totaled three RBI.
“This game obviously was not typical of our season,” Archer said. “These kids worked their tails off. They deserved to be here.”

Baseball: Missed opportunities cost NV
May 30, 2010 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — What Naches Valley did for an encore, following its state championship with another trip to the final four despite losing five key seniors, was by all accounts highly commendable.
It was, after all, the Rangers’ fourth successive advancement to the Class 1A state semifinals.
But what NV did for an encore to its encore, stranding 17 runners in back-to-back losses at Yakima County Stadium, did not sit well with coach Bill Walker.

“We just didn’t have anyone who wanted to step up and get the big hit,” he said after Saturday’s 5-1 loss to Meridian that left NV with the fourth-place trophy. “We just were not aggressive enough and we were not competitive enough, just like yesterday.
“Guys get a couple of hits and get their name in the paper — big deal. You have to want to make something happen. You have to want to step up.”
A day after leaving eight runners on base, including five in scoring position in a 4-2 loss to Cashmere, the Rangers (22-5) stranded nine against Meridian (20-8) with six left at either second or third base.
Though Trojans right-hander Zach Slesk struck out 11 — nine in the first three innings — Naches Valley matched its opponent with seven hits and had baserunners in each inning except the seventh.
The Rangers’ lone run, however, came in the third with Carson Kass logging the RBI by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. They remained full with one out in that frame, but two strikeouts followed.
NV loaded the sacks again in the fifth, this time with no outs, but pinch-hitter Noel Gonzalez bounced into a pitcher-to-catcher-to-first double play and Nathan Giles then lined out to left.
Third-place Meridian, meanwhile got two runs in the second off Chris Walker — one of them unearned — added a third on a suicide squeeze in the third and plated two more on Jordan Warren’s single in the fourth.
On the plus side for Naches Valley, J.R. Weigel concluded a stellar four-year career by going 2-for-4 and was greeted by well-deserved applause after his final high school at bat.
“J.R. Weigel is incredible,” Walker said. “How many kids can say they played in four final fours?”
Weigel was a courtesy runner as a freshman in 2007, played second in 2008 and has been an exemplary shortstop the past two seasons.
Last year against Kalama, Weigel fielded a grounder and threw to Adam Ranger at first for the final out of Naches Valley’s title-game triumph.
“Winning the state championship — that was phenomenal,” said Weigel, who plans to continue his career at Yakima Valley Community College. “But yeah, four final fours, that’s the best I could have asked for.”

Baseball: Chehalis cuts down R.A. Long
May 30, 2010 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — Having been king of the hill one night and king of the state the next, Chehalis’ Robert Pehl had no trouble picking which experience he’d enjoyed most.
“Oh, this — tonight, winning the state championship, no doubt,” he said after leading the Bearcats past R.A. Long 8-1 for the Class 2A state championship Saturday night at Yakima County Stadium. “It’s an awesome feeling — amazing. I can’t even describe it.”
The junior had pitched Chehalis’ 7-6 defeat of Archbishop Murphy in Friday’s semifinal, then went 3-for-3 with a homer and double while scoring three runs in the title game.
Pehl’s two-out, opposite-field solo blast put the Bearcats (21-3) ahead in the bottom of the first inning and they never looked back en route to the school’s first state baseball crown.
He then started a five-run rally in the third by doubling off the left-field wall with two out.
Sophomore Mitch Gueller scattered eight hits and benefited from some sparkling defensive play by junior shortstop Erik Forgione.
“This is what we’ve been pointing toward from day one,” Pehl said. “We hit a few rocks in the road, but now we’re here and it’s a great feeling.”
The Lumberjacks of Longview, appearing in their first baseball state title game, finished 20-4.
