Baseball: Dilly lifts Cashmere to title
May 30, 2010 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — For Luke Dilly, it hurt so good.
The Cashmere senior had no sooner crossed home plate with the winning run Saturday when he was buried beneath jubilant teammates and coaches in celebration of the Bulldogs’ 5-4 win over Chimacum for the Class 1A state championship at Yakima County Stadium.
“I was at the very bottom of the pile and it hurt — it hurt bad,” Dilly said, smiling. “But I wouldn’t trade the feeling for anything.”
Dilly had homered in the fourth inning before leading off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left. After an intentional walk to Cooper Elliott, Nick Tarver singled to left-center to score Dilly.
After starting the game at shortstop, Dilly came on to pitch the final three innings to win the first state baseball title for Cashmere (21-3), a Class 1A basketball power in the 1970s.
“Scoring the winning run was the most exciting thing,” Dilly said, “even if it did hurt afterward.”
Dylan Brown had a two-run double in the fourth and Landon Cray and Devin Manix drove in runs in the top of the seventh to tie it for Chimacum (18-4), which won the championship in 2007.

Fastpitch: Cle Elum takes second
May 30, 2010 by YH-R Sports
PASCO, Wash. — Cle Elum nearly made its first state fastpitch trophy a big one, but Castle Rock had other ideas.
Still, being No. 2 is still pretty good for a program that had failed to trophy in five previous state trips.
Behind pitcher Haley Bator and some timely hitting, Cle Elum followed up Friday’s upset of two-time defending champion Montesano with two more impressive victories Saturday to reach the Class 1A championship game.
But Castle Rock staged a late rally to pull away for a 7-3 victory at TRAC Complex in Pasco.
“Second in state. I’ll take it,” CE coach Cheryl Singer said.
Haley Bator was a big reason for that, as she threw a no-hitter and a one-hitter in Saturday’s victories. In her no-hitter, a 3-0 victory over Lakeside, she struck out 10, and she fanned seven in an 8-0 win over Chimacum.
In the final, Cle Elum (23-5) trailed 4-3 after the top of the sixth, but Castle Rock scored three in the bottom of the frame to seal the victory.

Fastpitch: Fickes grabs spotlight
May 30, 2010 by Scott Sandsberry
Junior’s spectacular catch the highlight for Vikings ||
SELAH, Wash. — Had it come in a tie game, saved a victory or perhaps extended Selah’s fastpitch season, the jaw-dropping fielding play turned in by Viking junior Natalie Fickes would go down in school lore, perhaps with capital letters: The Catch.
As it was, Fickes’ spectacular, fully-stretched-out, diving catch of a would-be double into the gap — and her presence of mind to hop up and throw to second base, catching the surprised runner off the bag for a double play — became the highlight-reel capper to Selah’s 20-win fastpitch season.
Selah’s year ended at Carlon Park with a 4-2 loss to North Mason, the first of two games the Vikings needed to win to clinch a Class 2A state-tournament trophy. It was the program’s first Saturday state-tourney appearance since 2002, but the Vikings (20-7) could manage only three hits — including Morgan McAllister’s run-scoring triple — off North Mason ace Emily Anderson.
“We had a really good season, and I’m proud of our kids,” coach Bill Harris said. “We reached our goal of playing on the last Saturday.”
Fickes’ play came with two outs in the sixth inning and North Mason runners on second and third.
“You just knew the ball was going to drop in,” Harris said, “and she comes out of nowhere and makes the best diving defensive play I’ve seen. Ever.
“It could have been a game-changer, so instead of needing a really big inning, we’re still down only two runs and just need a couple of hits to fall in.”
But the Vikings went down in order in the seventh.
Fastpitch: Holt leads Woodland to title
May 30, 2010 by Scott Sandsberry
SELAH, Wash. — With eight regular-season and district-tourney losses, the Woodland Beavers might not have looked like a team destined to become Class 2A state fastpitch champions.
But they sure made it look easy this weekend.
With all-everything pitcher Emily Holt dominating both on the mound and at the plate, the Beavers rolled to an 8-1 title-game victory over Colville at Carlon Park to capture Woodland’s first state fastpitch crown.
“A lot of people looked us us and thought we weren’t going to get through district,” Holt said. “I think maybe even some of our girls thought the same thing. But our hitting came alive.”
The Beavers’ linchpin was Holt, a junior already committed to playing college ball at Nebraska, who in her two days at Carlon:
• Fired a five-hitter in the finale and allowed just five runs in four complete games.
• Struck out 44 batters in 26 innings.
• Batted 9-for-15 (.600) with two home runs, including a solo shot in the title game and another long fly ball that was caught a foot from the fence in center.
Not too shabby for a girl who doesn’t bat on her summer-league team and missed three games this season with stretched shoulder tendons, the result of a change in her curveball motion.
“You’ve got to get lucky to win it all here,” Woodland coach Damon Yeo said. “Things have to fall in place. Next year, we might take first in league and not even get here. Everything has to fall in place. I still think (third-place finisher) W.F. West is better than us, because we’ve never beaten them.”
But this weekend, nobody could beat the Beavers.
Fastpitch: Pe Ell dethrones Adna
May 30, 2010 by Dave Thomas
Colton repeats in 1B; SC fourth in 1B ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Colton and Adna took the field Saturday afternoon with a repeat title well within their respective grasps.
By the end of the day at Gateway Complex, Colton had secured itself another Class 1B fastpitch title, but Adna had the 2B crown slip through their fingers in dramatic fashion against an old foe.
Behind the stellar pitching of Kelsey Moser and air-tight defense, Colton clipped Touchet in the final for the second straight year, winning 5-2 this time around.
Adna also had a title-game rematch, facing Pe Ell, but this time, the Trojans turned the tables on the champs, winning 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Sunnyside Christian also earned a team trophy as the Knights fell 1-0 to Almira/Coulee-Hartline to finish fourth in 1B.
CLASS 2B: Pe Ell (22-5) ended Adna’s perfect season during the district tournament, and then ended its title reign Saturday afternoon.
“This year, a lot was expected from this team and they came through,” said Pe Ell coach John Woods, whose daughter Amanda was the winning pitcher, allowing just three hits while striking out seven. “Amanda has been a great ace for us and we have a great team behind her.”
Particularly in the eighth inning Saturday.
In the top of the inning, Adna’s Emma Brattain doubled and pinch runner Brianna Lawrence moved to third with one out. The next hitter flied out to center and Lawrence tagged up, but Christina Brooks made a near-perfect throw home to catcher Amanda Alden, who applied the tag to keep the game scoreless.
Pe Ell then got to Adna’s Jessika-Jo Sandrini in the bottom of the frame. Held hitless for 71?3 innings, Amber Arrington finally broke through with a double. Shawna McLeod followed with a single into left-center that easily scored pinch runner Mattie Miller, setting off a wild celebration and handing Adna just its second loss in 28 games.
Earlier Saturday, La Salle (15-8) lost its first game, falling 4-1 to Davenport, which broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the seventh inning.
CLASS 1B: Colton bested Touchet for the fourth time in five meetings this season, although Saturday’s victory was not nearly as easy as last season’s 13-1 title win over the Indians.
But it did have a familiar feel to it, with the Wildcats relying on strong pitching and solid defense in their third title-game appearance in four seasons.
“We’ve been playing strong defense all year,” Colton coach Brad Nelson said. “When you get good defense like we have, it builds confidence for your pitcher.”
Moser was strong until a slight bump in the seventh, when Touchet scored both its runs, as the senior struck out 11. She helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored.
Even though Colton jumped ahead 2-0 after one and led 5-0 entering the seventh, Nelson said he didn’t feel at ease until that final out was made.
“You can never let down against Touchet,” Nelson said.
Sunnyside Christian (17-8) had a successful return to state after missing out in 2009. The Knights secured a team trophy with a 6-4 victory over Cusick in their first game Saturday, but came up short against ACH.
“You can’t be ashamed of a 1-0 loss,” Sunnyside Christian coach Sandy Harris said.
Thorp-Easton (12-7) had a chance to make it an all-local third- and fourth-place game, but the Wildcats fell 10-0 to ACH in a consolation semifinal.
“This group has seen state, but this was a good experience because we had a lot of players at new positions this season,” said Thorp-Easton coach A.J. Smith, who loses just one senior off this squad.
Tennis: Selah duo rolls to title
May 30, 2010 by YH-R Sports
SEATTLE — Selah’s work in progress is complete.
Vikings duo Kevin Bertelsen and Devin Teske capped three trips to the Class 2A state tennis tournament — the last two as doubles partners — with a championship Saturday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington campus.
“It just feels great; it feels amazing,” Bertelsen said via telephone.
As they did Friday, the tandem swept its two matches to snare the top prize. The Vikings team lost more than three games in a set just once.
“All the matches followed the same course — holding serve and at the right time, breaking serve,” said Selah coach Don Judy, who was the girls coach in the late 1980s when the Vikings last had a tennis champion, also a boys doubles team.
The duo started the day by beating Sequim’s Reed Gunstone and Malory Maloney in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-3, in a rematch of last year’s matchup for third and fifth, which Bertelsen and Teske also won.
The start of the second set in Saturday’s match, Bertelsen said, provided the weekend’s only anxious moments for the Selah team.
“We kind of got off to a rocky start, the semis were where we lost last year and we wanted it so bad,” he said.
The Vikings pulled it together, however, to advance to the championship match where they lost just five games to Andrew Troutman and Kyle Buckham of Bellingham.
“The chemistry and the whole atmosphere was just together,” Judy said. “They played like they were seniors and there was no tomorrow.”
Ellensburg junior Abigail Pellet improved on sixth-place finish of a year ago by taking fifth. She lost to eventual champion Tracy Landram of Klahowya in the semifinals.
Fellow Bulldog Josiah Jackson fell in the consolation semifinals after finishing fourth last season.

Tennis: WV’s Carlson, Anderson take 3rd
May 30, 2010 by YH-R Sports
VANCOUVER, Wash. — The good news: West Valley’s Jeff Carlson and Cooper Anderson earned 3rd place at the WIAA 3A Tennis Championships at the Vancouver Tennis Center.
The bad news: They had to beat teammates Aaron Farmer and Daniel Wenker to do it.
The two Rams doubles teams lost their semifinals Saturday morning, before meeting up in the 3rd place match.
Farmer and Wenker earned fifth place, while West Valley’s Alexis Filliol took fourth in girls singles.
“It makes for a successful season,” first-year West Valley boys coach Tyson Whitfield said of the result. “You’re goal is to get as many players to stay as you can. And to have them place is quite an accomplishment.”
In the semis, Carlson and Anderson lost to the 2009, and eventual 2010 doubles champs — Andrew LaCava and Jason Bediones of Seattle Prep, 6-4, 6-1.
Farmer and Wenker dropped their semi to Mercer Island’s Max Franklin and Andrew Smith, 6-2, 6-2.
The third-place match among teammates was a bit anticlimactic.
“It was more relaxed,” Anderson said after the 6-4, 6-1 win. “We’ve played each other in practice for the past three weeks. So this was about 50 percent competitive, and 50 percent fun.”
Carlson and Anderson also won when the two teams faced off for the district doubles title two weeks ago and at regionals last week.
The strong doubles showing earned the Rams third place in the team standings behind back-to-back champs Seattle Prep and second-place Mercer Island.
“We knew we had a shot,” Wenker said of earning a team trophy. “It’s what we were hoping for. It’s great that we accomplished that.”
His coach agrees.
“You look at the traditional 3A power houses (Seattle Prep and Mercer Island), and to think we were a couple of points away is quite an accomplishment for our guys,” Whitfield said.
Only Carlson graduates. So with three state-placers returning next year, Whitfield says he has the same goal, or higher, for next season.
Filliol won twice Saturday to earn her medal.
The senior beat Sedro-Woolley’s Kilee Beuse, 6-1, 6-1 in her consolation semi, then rolled by Juanita’s Maria Jouravleva, 6-1, 6-0 in her final match.
Filliol adds this year’s finish to a singles championship as a freshman, and sixth place as a junior.
She says, 4th this year may actually be more of an accomplishment than her individual championship three years ago.
“The level of competition at 3A has gone up from when I was a freshman,” Filliol said. “I’m a better player now than I was when I was a freshman. The level of competition has changed.”
Seattle Prep’s Taylor Hunt won the boys singles.
On the girls side, Bainbridge Island’s Sasha Carter won girls singles while Anissa Bryant-Smith and Malia Lum of Sammamish won girls doubles.
Mercer Island won its second straight girls team championship.

Tennis: Gibbons, Fossum finish fourth
May 30, 2010 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA, Wash. — Their spotless records gone by Friday evening, La Salle senior Seth Gibbons and Naches Valley junior Larisa Fossum still found the perfect way to end the tennis season.
The two went out winners with two victories apiece Saturday to claim fourth-place trophies in the Class 1A-2B-1B state tennis tournament at the Yakima Tennis Club.
Gibbons, third a year ago, overpowered his two opponents Saturday to match his finish as a sophomore.
“He’s had a good four years — a little unlucky in the state draws,” La Salle coach Cheryl Colvin said. “He was very upset after the loss and it took all that he had to bounce back from that match.”
Fossum, a state doubles champion in 2009 with her then-senior sister Zori, won tough first sets in each of her matches Saturday before cruising in the second.
“She was pretty slow in the first set of her first match,” said Naches Valley coach Seth Basford, noting her opponent, Tenino’s Kirsten Jorgensen, is a good friend and that might’ve been a factor.
Basford said Friday’s three-set quarterfinal loss should help motivate Fossum in the offseason.
“She lost a match she felt she could’ve won,” he said. “She wants to take it a little more serious over the summer.”
Granger’s Janae Klarich and Emily Carpenter finished sixth in doubles.
Lana Robins of Overlake won the girls title while Cascade Christian’s Nathan Anderson took the boys championship.
