Soccer: Toppenish ends up fourth
May 30, 2010 by YH-R Sports
SUMNER, Wash. — After 80 minutes and two overtime sessions, nothing was settled in the Class 2A state consolation final between Toppenish and Sehome.
In the battle for third place, Toppenish lost 1-0 in a shootout on Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium.
“The kids battled hard,” coach Uriel Gonzalez said. “We just couldn’t finish.”
Gonzalez also said the Wildcats played excellent defense, especially goalie Leo Fuentes.
“Leo did an outstanding job. He made a lot of good saves,” Gonzalez said.
Sehome prevailed 5-3 in the shootout.
“It’s kind of rough for the boys, they didn’t accept it well,” Gonzalez said. “But it’s a good accomplishment to finish fourth in the state.”
In Saturday’s other game, Bellingham defeated Cheney 1-0 for the state championship.
Cheney has now lost three straight state-title matches.

Both teams are now 4-6 for the season and tied for third in the AIFA’s West Division.
Down four in the fourth quarter, Yakima Valley fumbled at the Wenatchee Valley 1, and later had another fumble returned for a touchdown.

Baseball: Rangers don’t capitalize on chances
May 29, 2010 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — Opportunity doesn’t knock that often when the stakes are high and the opponents are good.
When it does, as it did Friday for Naches Valley in its Class 1A state semifinal, it’s imperative that the door is answered. The Rangers scrambled toward it in commendable fashion at Yakima County Stadium but didn’t quite get there in time, falling 4-2 to Cashmere.
The defeat, only the fourth against 22 wins for a team that lost five key seniors from its 2009 state title team, dropped NV into today’s 10 a.m. game against Meridian (19-8) for third and fourth places.
The Bulldogs (20-3), who finished fourth here last year, will meet Chimacum (18-3) at 4 p.m. for the championship.

“They had a sour taste in their mouths from last season and obviously wanted a different taste,” Rangers coach Bill Walker said. “Sort of like us after ’07 and ’08.”
Naches Valley had fallen short in each of those seasons before breaking through last year.
Making their fourth straight final four appearance, the Rangers came up empty on scoring opportunities in the first, third and sixth innings. Down 4-0, they scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on second base before it ended.

“When you have opportunities you have to score runs,” Walker said. “We left too many guys on base — I’m not sure how many (eight, including five in scoring position) — but we left too many guys on, and not just in the seventh.”
Against Cashmere right-hander Nick Tarver, NV got two-out, first-inning singles from Chris Walker and Carson Kass but didn’t score. J.R. Weigel, who finished 3-for-4, doubled with two out in the third and was stranded.
In the sixth, Cody Johns and Weigel started the frame with base hits but freshman Koleman Johns, pinch-running for Cody, roamed too far off second on Walker’s line drive to center and was doubled off.
“Got a little too excited,” Walker noted after the Rangers were again left scoreless.
In the seventh, Wesston Parker was hit by a pitch and pinch-runner Thane Pierson took second on a balk. J.D. Ring singled him to third, and Pierson scored on Jake Frazier’s fielder’s choice groundout.
After Aaron Putas was hit, Tarver was replaced by Jake Dilly who fanned Cody Johns before yielding a single by Weigel that loaded the bases. Walker then drew a free pass to force home pinch-runner Cody Johnson and advance Weigel, representing the tying run, to second.
But Lilly followed by striking out cleanup hitter Carson Kass to end it.
“I’m proud of the way my guys battled,” Walker said. “We competed to the final out. Now we’ll rally ‘em up and go after third place tomorrow.”
For Cashmere, sophomore first baseman Cooper Elliott was the offensive standout.
He pulled a two-run homer just inside the right-field foul pole to start the scoring in the fourth, then drilled an RBI single to center in the sixth. Spencer Lee’s two-out double in the seventh plated the Bulldogs’ final run.

Chimacum 6, Meridian 4: Landon Cray tossed a complete-game victory and was backed with a 15-hit offensive effort as Chimacum held off Meridian.
The win sends the Cowboys (18-3) into today’s 4 p.m. championship game, while Meridian (19-8) will play at 10 a.m. for third place.
Cray, a left-hander, was in control throughout and ran into trouble only in the seventh, when the Trojans rallied for two runs on three hits and had the winning run at the plate with two outs.
But Cray struck out Joe Madeira to end the threat and the game, stranding the tying run at first. Cray struck out 10 and walked two.
The Cowboys jumped out in front with two runs in the first on a two-run double by Austin McConnell and a sacrifice fly by Quinn Eldridge. Eldridge singled home a run in the third, and Cray plated another run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
The Cowboys stranded 12 runners in the game, including seven in scoring position.
McConnell finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, and Cray, Lucas Dukek and Dillon Dukek each were 2-for-4.
Zach Slesk had a solo homer and a sacrifice fly for the Trojans and finished 2-for-3. Tait Slesk and Mitchell Tripp each collected two hits.

Baseball: Little lefty lifts Long past Selah
May 29, 2010 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — Sometimes big challenges come in small packages.
Witness R.A. Long’s Josh Johnson, who while not physically imposing, Friday night pitched an absolute monster of a game against Selah.
The Lumber-jacks’ junior left-hander used an assortment of impeccably placed soft-serve offerings, mixed in an occasional fastball and scattered seven hits to stymie the Vikings 3-1 in a Class 2A semifinal at Yakima County Stadium.

Selah's Allen Noble prepares to tag RA Long's Michael Puvogel, who was caught in a run down during the 2A State Baseball Championships May 28, 2010 at Yakima County Stadium in Yakima, Wash. (Andy Sawyer/Yakima Herald-Republic)
“Their kid was good,” said coach Mike Archer, whose Viks (21-4) will oppose Archbishop Murphy (21-4) at 1 p.m. today in a game for third and fourth places. “His location was outstanding with his off-speed stuff, and that made his fastball look that much quicker.”

The Lumberjacks (20-5), meanwhile, will meet Chehalis (20-3) at 7 p.m. for the championship.
Height and weight are not listed in state tournament baseball rosters, but suffice it to describe Johnson as a scale-model Jamie Moyer.
He struck out five and walked none en route to out-dueling Selah righty Trent Douglass, who was victimized by three run-scoring hits with two out.
The Vikings, who had a 10-game winning streak snapped, got a two-out RBI hit, too, but nothing beyond Andrew Gonzalez’s ringing third-inning double off the left-center field wall that scored Kurt Lindemann, who had singled.
Selah might have had a bigger inning, but Allen Noble had been picked off first after a leadoff single. Kyle Fickes experienced a similar fate an inning later.
“We had some mistakes in bunt situations that hurt us,” Archer said. “But also in a game like this we needed a break — a ball to drop for us somewhere along the way.”
Not only did the Vikings not benefit from such good fortune, they were denied on multiple occasions.
In the fifth, for example, Noble’s double was preceded by right-fielder Tanner Chamberlain’s diving grab of Douglass’s leadoff drive. And with two out and Noble at third in the same frame, left-fielder Jake Look made a shoestring catch of Lindemann’s sinking flair.
Long’s telling blows came from Chamberlain, whose single to center tied it in the fourth; Look’s base hit to left that scored a runner who’d reached base on an error in the fifth; and Michael Puvogel’s double in the sixth.
No Lumberjack had more than one hit, but eight of them had one each. Lindemann and Noble produced two apiece for Selah.
“Both pitchers pitched well (Douglass issued no walks while fanning three),” Archer said, “and I thought we played hard and played well. What we do now is come back tomorrow. We’re not frontrunners. We’ll try to win another game and get these kids a reward for all the hard work they’ve done.”

Chehalis 7, Archbishop Murphy 6: A heads-up defensive play gave Chehalis a berth in the Class 2A baseball championship game.
After watching their 7-2 lead shrink on back-to-back two-run doubles, the Bearcats finished the victory when Erik Forgione caught a napping baserunner off the bag for the final out at Yakima County Stadium.
ATM’s Chris Peterson started the seventh-inning scoring with a two-out, two-run ground-rule double down the right-field line off Chehalis starter and winning pitcher Robert Pehl.
Jacob Oster followed with a two-run double to left center that pulled ATM within a run. However, Forgione fielded the outfield throw and came up behind Oster at second. When Oster briefly stepped off the bag, Forgione tagged the runner for the out, ending the game.
